Pagac Family

My Greatgrandmother was Anna Pagac, married Havel (Paul) Hornak. Had 7 daughters, 3 who immigrated to the US between 1910 and 1915. They lived in Wyjava, now in the Slovak Republic.

I am looking for any family history from the old country. I have not been able to trace any further back than this at this time. Anyone who may have information on my family in the old country please post.

Thanks so much!

PAGACS (Pagac^ in Slovak) Erzsebet, Kristina, Stefan and Zuzanna from Miava (now) Myjava, Slovak Republic coming thru Ellis Island.

HORNAK Christina from Kiara (Miava)
PAGACS Betta from Kiara (Miava)
Check also for people coming thru EI from a Wiava.

The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records but nothing for Myjava. This is the region that its films are slowly getting into the library. You can wait on the films, send a request to the archive or hire a researcher. www.centroconsult.sk

Check in Slovak Pride in www.our-slovakia.com as there a surname PAGAC and HORNAK register. You can get in touch with the descendants thru Ms. Helene. www.helenezx.homestead.com

Zlatica,

Thank you. I think you have the right Christina here, but I know nothing about the Pagac side of the family. Of the 3 Hornak sisters that immigrated there are only 5 living children, all getting old, my mother (Christina's daughter) knows nothing of her family, only one of her cousins (Catharine's children) has been there and she is loosing her memory and has not been a lot of help, neither of her siblings ever made the trip. There is one living child of Elizabeth who we are trying to locate. He has moved and no one seems to be able to find his address.

Of the 4 sisters that remained in Myjava, 2 died young (Anna and Elinca - I don't know if I am spelling her name right), and I have no history on Susan or Dorothy. There is only one family left in Wyjava, that I know of, a daughter I assume of either Susan or Dorothy. They had one son that I know of who passed away. They are the last known link to my history. Very poor farmers, if I am spelling this right, last name Klvacova. I am guessing they are getting up in years too as they are cousins to my mother who is the youngest of the bunch here and is in her med 70's. I am awaiting their reply.

Thank you so much for the leads you have given, maybe I can find something in the meantime.

I am also from another post Ieft in touch with a man here in the US who also has Hornak relatives from Moravia, we are thinking they may be related, due to the closeness of the locations.

Thanks again,
Candii

Hopefully you were notified about the other posts I left to your queries.
Did you send a letter in Slovak? That would speed up a reply. How about a photo of your ancestor? Another plus for you and the Myjava relatives to relate to.
Elinca is not correct Slovak first name unless it is a nickname or Elenka a term of endearment for Elena/Alena.
Did you use www.infospace.com to locate Elizabeth's son? You know it is Myjava and not Wyjava which never was spelled that way. : )
A surname KLC^, and KLVAC^ in Stara Myjava's phone book. www.zoznamst.sk
The surname HORNAK shows up from one end of Slovak Republic to the other. Maybe few generations up the family tree all Hornaks were related. I am sure you know that they use zip code and it goes before a name of a town.

Zlatica,

Yes I was notified thank you. I sent the letter in English, they do have a translator who for $2 US translates the letters for them. I didn't send a picture but sent a copy of their last letter to one of the cousins. I also identified myself as Christina's grand daughter. The cousins are trying to locate Elizabeth's sons address, they claim to have it just aren't sure what they did with it and I don't have the correct spelling of her married name.

Thank you for the clarification of Elinca, I didn't think that was right, but no one had the right spelling. Yes, I know it is Myjava, don't know why my fingers keep insisting on typing it wrong the past couple days. I've done web searches for the area and it looks absolutely beautiful. We don't have a lot of open spaces like that here in the Chicago area, and the old country blood in me yearns at time for such a spot.

I'm looking through the websites you have given me and hopefully will be able to find something there also. You have been a great help!

Thank you again and again and again :)

Seems like you have the bases covered. Give it time for a reply since they have to have the letter translated.
See you also posted on http://slovakia.eunet.sk
You know that the church records for Slovakia are by a name of a town and then religion, nothing by a surname.
On the Slovak records your female ancestor's surname would have OVA ending.
