Hello Ted,

I have read your mail of the Paffrath surname board today. To this I yet would like to add the following: The village of Paffrath is a part of the city of Bergisch Gladbach today east of Cologne on the right side of the Rhine river. "Flittard" is also a part in the north of the city of Cologne on the right side of the Rhine river. I also would like to explain the origin of the name Paffrath to you; but it is difficult to translate!! The syllable "Paff" is dialectal in the Rhineland derogatory a "clergyman". A "Pfaffe" is a "clergyman" in English! The syllable "rath" is derived of "clearing" of a forest (in German: "roden"). This meant: The churches and monasteries in the Rhineland were early owner of gigantic forests and big land estates. But they had to cultivate the area of the forests; they had to be cleared. The last name "Paff rath" arose from this two syllables: These were the people in the area; what the trees cleared in the forests.
If you are interested in further Paffraths in the area around Cologne; I can help you.

Hello,
My Name is April Paffrath Foulks. I am the daughter of Andrew Paul Paffrath. Dale Paffrath is my uncle (my fathers youngest brother) & their parents Herman & Mina are my grandparents. Herman came over from Germany with his father Edurd in 1907 through Ellis Island. Edurd was 58 & Herman was 10. Herman's wife Johanna died in childbirth in Germany,(from what my aunt Grace Javenkoski (my father's sister)told me before she died. We have ALOT of family here, & you can find several on facebook. we are also researching our family history >facebook.com > April Paffrath Foulks <
I have also created a site here> http://www.myheritage.com/site-61940331/aprillady-kiras-ance... where all the information can be stored in one place. I am also sending invitations to the other members of our family to join & help fill this our. There is also a feature to add or link to other existing family trees, so it you have one, we will see what needs to be done to add it as well. If you wish to join, you may & you will be able to add information & pictures with the rest of us.

In addition to the information that April gave on Herman.......
Herman was the youngest child. He had either 11 or 12 older sisters. His father, as far as I know had 1 brother. The brother had either all sons, or all sons and one daughter (similar number of children). Herman's parents were Edurd (also spelled Edward after arriving in the US) and Johanna. I will have to look for the names of some of Herman's sisters. Two, that I am aware of also immigrated to the US. Grandpa (Herman) cut all ties with his family in Germany, and did not allow Germany to be talked about nor German spoken in the home after that.
If you are researching Herman Paffrath, born in Germany in the late 1800's, I wouldn't spend my money on sights offering information as the information there is NOT for him, but rather for a Herman Paffrath born in the early 1900's.
