I'm researching Paddles any where any time. Our branch come from Suffolk and have spread through Canada and Australia. I'd be interested to hear from anyone with an interest in this unusual surname.

Alison, my name is Padley and we are also in Ontario, Canada. Our branch traces back to Sheffield England. Any chance it's the same name with a spelling change over the years?

Ray, I don't think there will be any immediate connection. Paddle is a name that lends itself to being misheard (I have been called a number of names - some more polite than others - over the phone when people try to make sense of a surname they haven't come across before!). And in the days before universal education there were many variations of spelling. I have found many surnames beginning with Pad...However, in the 1800's Paddle has mainly been confused with Pattle, although I have also found some Paddle's who became Padwells. Most of the Paddle's have come from Suffolk, Essex and London, and only a very few from the North - an Abner Paddle who was in Silkstone in Yorks in the mid 1800's. Best wishes, Alison

Hi Alison, Thanks for your reply. I agree, not much chance of a name connection but when you start to trace your familt tree you try everything. Best wishes Ray Padley

I stumbled upon your infromation on the surname Paddle this evening and feel I must respond. Our family lives in the province of Newfoundland, Canada. We are originally from a small island community of Port Elizabeth in Placentia Bay, and now live in a fishing village called Red Harbour. There is only one family of Paddle's in the province, to my knowledge. It is also intriging that you mention the name Padley, as I have noticed that prior to 1925 the grave markers on Port Elizabeth are all spelled Padley, after which it was changed to Paddle. I would be most interested in any information you could e-mail me about the surname as so little is known in our area.

Hi there, My grandfather came from Paddle's Point, Newfoundland and when he was 17 he moved to Toronto. His name was Wilson Paddle and his children are Frank, Ralph, Earl, Geoge and Ruth. He had lots of brothers and a sister. I know of Fred, Albert, Louis and Susie. Bye for now, Maryanne

I researched the Padley/Paddle lineage at the provincial archives and have the info if you want it.

There is a small branch of the Paddle family in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. There are around 5 or 6 family groups who carry the surname into the next generation. It's interesting to see that there are some thriving Paddles in Canada, as the family found few links left in the UK a few years ago.
Any genealogical comment welcome, as the family here is very small and has not much of a sense of its original roots in England!

Dear Alison, My father's name was Ronald born 1917 who had one sister Norah(both deceased) whose Father was called Sydney(my grandfather)who was married to Florence Swain (in the Sydenham area of south London).Apparently he had several brothers one apparently who was called Arthur and was sea captain in Orient Line and was later posted to Singapore .He had two daughters Billy and Molly both deceased. There are quite a few Paddles left in London (telephone Book) and I spotted one in Kendal Cumbria.

Hi Alison,
I have very little info on my Paddle links but my 5x gt grandmother was Susan Paddle who was born abt. 1733. She married John Armstrong on 13 Dec 1764 in Lawshall. She died and was buried 1 Jan 1733 aged 64 in Lawshall.
I know of one child, Mary Armstrong in 1764 in Lawshall.
This is all I have at present so if you or anyone else can help I would appreciate it greatly.
