I am trying to find information on the family of Catherine Padden, daughter of John Padden and Margaret Harrity. She was born ~1838 in the Belmullet area of County Mayo. She married Michael Munnelly in 1858 in Belmullet Parish and they immigrated to PA in ~1863/64.

They lived in Butler Township, Schuylkill County. Michael died in 1899, and Catherine died in 1910.

If you have any information on this family, please contact me.

Hello Marianne
I've just come across your post, from 5 years ago! I don't know if you've found out any more about your Catherine, but her brother Edward, born 1838 married Bridget (don't have a maiden name) and they emigrated to England and they settled in the east of Newcastle upon Tyne. Their daughter Mary Padden was born in 1863, and she was my great grandmother. Catherine also had 2 other brothers, John born 1834 and Patrick born 1839. Her parents were John Padden b 1815 in Killcommon Bellmullet Co. Mayo and Margaret Heraghty b 1818 also from Bellmullet. That's all I can find out. Hope it helps you!

Regards

Sue

Sue,

Thank you so much for this information! I am amazed that you know so much about this family. I had the names of her parents from her death certificate, but that is all.

Thank you again.

I am researching a man named Martin W. Padden, born in County Mayo, circa 1837/39, the son of a John Padden and a (first name unk) Munnally or Munnelly. My goal is to find out exactly where in Co. Mayo Martin was from. Complicating things are the fact that Roman Catholic Baptismal records for 1837/39 are not available in the civil parish of Kilcommon.

Martin W. Padden emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania, where in June of 1863, in the 12th Congressional District (which I believe was Susquehanna and Luzerne, PA.) he registered for the draft (civil war) reporting his age as 26. Next to his name in the registration records (on Ancestry) was a man named "James Padden" age 24 or (b. 1839) both in Ireland:I presume James was a relative of Martin's; no further info on James.

Martin W. Padden, as a substitute soldier, joined the 6th PA Cavalry in Aug of 1864 and survived the war. He became a locksmith and then a "pattern maker" and moved to Chicago. By 1878 he was married to Chicago born, Mary Maloney and they had ten children:
1. Thomas, Dec. 1878
2. Francis M. 1880,
3. Edward b. Sept. 1881
4. David H. b. Mar. 1883
5. Robert J. b. Aug. 1885
6. Catherine (Katie) H. b. Mar. 1888 (married Payne)
7. Frederick L. b. Nov. 1889
8. William E. b. Mar 1892
9. Harold J. b. Mar. 1894
10. Florence M. b. Aug. 1896 (married John O'Toole)

I researched both the Tithe Applotment Survey and Griffith's Valuation noting the following results:

Tithe Applotment records for 1834 showed a possibility that the John Paddens were from Kilcommon Parish... only one John Padden in Kilcommon... he was John Padden who occupied 4 acres of land in the Townland of Attyconnane (Atticonnane), Diocese of Killala, Parish of Kilcommon West. John Padden's four acres were described as "rocky mountain" for tithing purposes...

Closeby in the Townland of Mount Jubilee (or Frista) listed in Tithe records was a "Thomas Munnelly" occupying 631 acres

Griffiths Valuation of Ireland: Griffiths still showed a John Padden residing in the Townland of Attyconaun (Atticonnan).

See any connections between my Padden/Munnelly and yours ?

Thanks, Rick Barrett, Clifton, VA.

Hi Rick,

All I am sure of is that my Paddens and Munnelys were from near Belmullet since I have a reference for their marriage and a baptismal reference for their son from the Belmullet Catholic Church.

If you look at a map of the Belmullet area, you will see that the town of Belmullet is actually at the narrowest point of the isthmus connecting the "mullet" to the mainland. Attycunnane is on the north mainland side of the isthmus, and Mt Jubilee is SE of that toward Geesala and Doohoma. I found all three of my surnames (Padden, Munnelly or Monnelly, and Heraghty) in the Griffiths in the townland of Carrowmore which is at the western end of Carrowmore Lake (also close to Belmullet).

So yes, I believe there are definitely connections.

I hired an Irish researcher a few years ago and one of the things that he sent me was a list of all the Belmullet Church marriages and baptisms (from the records that had survived) for people named Munnelly or Monnelly.

The document is sort of rambling, but I can send it to you separately if you send me your email address. There are a few Paddens listed.

So far, the two most valuable things I have found to do are collecting family pedigrees from other people with similar surnames from that area, and y-DNA testing of straight-line male Munnelly descendants.

I started the y-DNA testing aspect about six years ago with my brother's y-DNA. I am now the volunteer project administrator of the Munley/Manley Surname Project at

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Munley/

There is not a "Padden" surname project, but there is a Paden/Peden project that seems like a good place to start. Spelling variations are so common. See

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/peden/

I also know that there are several families of Paddens and Munnellys from the Belmullet area who settled in and around Archbald, Pennsylvania near Scranton. This is in Lackawanna County, but Lackawanna used to be part of Luzerne County.

I hope this helps. I am very interested in your families, and would like to stay in touch with you,
