My father was Rodney Paavola, (1939-1995) born in Hancock, MI. He has one brother, Reuben (everyone knows him as Achie) still living there. My Grandparents are Reuben A.(born 1913) and Eleanor S.(born 1917) Paavola. My Great Grandparents on my Grandfaters side are Arvid Paavola and Emma (Krapu) Paavola. My Great Grandparens on my Grandmother side are Hannu Luttinen and Anna (Hamalainen) Luttinen. Not sure of who came over and when. I was raised in Hancock, MI and an interesting note is that a couple of miles North of Hancock is an area/town called Paavola Location. Not sure of it's history other than it's right in the middle of the old copper mining area.

My Great Grandfather John Paavola from Lapua,Finland bought the property to sell to Miners. The first Postmaster of "Paavola"was John's son John. Most of the family attended Suomi College.I don't know if there's a connection between our families. There will be a Paavola reunion at the Ramada Inn in Hancock on August 11,2001 Maybe someone there will know.

Those names aren't in my family however I have seen an Arvid on either the Ellis Island site or the Migration Institute site. Every city that I've lived in practically has had an Arvid Paavola in the telephone directory. From Marquette, MI, Nashville, TN to Orlando, FL.
Interesting....

Hi Frank, Here's my Paavola info. My grandfather, Henrik Sanfred Paavola was born 9.25.1883 in Kaustinen, Finland. He had a sister, Hilda Maria, b.2.15.1885, d.8.30.1886. His father died in 1885. His mother then married Alexander Eriksson Paavola in 1890. They lived in Kaustinen also. They had 3 children: Alexander b.3.5.1891 d.5.8.1893, Hilja b.3.1.1894 d.?, and Aleksi b.7.29.1896 d.? I've been in contact with a researcher in Finland to find out if Henrik's half brother and sister remained in Finland or immigrated to the US. My grandfather immigrated in 1906 to Iron Belt, WI. My parents always lived in and around the UP. I grew up in Marquette. To my knowledge, none of the Paavolas in Michigan are related. Unless they descend from the 2 half-siblings I mentioned. I have some cousins in WI. I do have Paavola blood relatives in Finland from the 1700s back to about 1500. I'd be interested to learn of the Paavolas you mentioned to see if I am related to that Paavola clan. Hope to hear back from you. Regards, Kevin Paavola

Saw your post, wonder if you are related. My grandmother, Anna Irene Paavola, was born Kaustinen dec 1895.she came to america 1913. her father was juhani heikki timonen, born 1850kaustinen. her mother Brita Sunde who was born in kronoby.I understand there is a Paavola house in finland that dates back to 1600's or so.I think my grandmother only had sisters who lived to adulthood-Rauha, ?, and Saima (who also came to america).

Hi Frank, I, too, am researching the Paavola and Kojola families of Lapua, Finland. This is a little of what I have. Heikki Paavola (1837-1907) m. Liisa Ulvila (1837-1907). Son, Alexander (1867-1950), m. Liisa Kojola (1875-1945) Does this match your family? If so maybe we can help each other. Yours truly, Barrett Swink
