Frank Paape and Katherine Solterback met on the boat from Germany and married in the US. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a while and had a merchantile store. Then they moved to Marinette, Wisconsin later to Algoma, Wisconsin and lived on a farm. If any one can help me I sure would like to talk to you. Thanks Dolores

I believe that Franz and Katherine are my great, great, great grandparents... though I am not certain. I have been researching recently and came across their names buried with many of my more recent ancestors. My maiden name is Paape and I, along with the rest of my family grew up in Algoma, WI. Would love to learn more and share the information that I have so far. In my understanding, Frank and Katherine are the parents of Edward who married Catherine Merit (my great, great grandparents).

My father, Calvin Paape is from the Algoma area, as were his parents Ralph and Arlene (Butterfield) Paape. I know some (if not all) of the names of Ralph's siblings are Lester, Byron, and Judy, but I don't know much of anything beyond that.

I'm trying to find the gap between Franz (Frank) Paape and myself, seeing as I just inherited his Civil War Musket. If anyone can help, or knows more about Frank and Catherine's children and/or grandchildren, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am a great, great granddaughter of Frank and Catherine Paape of Algoma. Their daughter Ida, married Wenzel Prokash and had one son, Walter, who was my grandfather. Ida's husband died young and she then married Theodore Weiricks and had other children. Walter, her first son, was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Catherine, as he was more comfortable in their home than he was with his mother's new family. Walter married Nora Johnson of Sturgeon Bay and had 2 daughters, Marjorie (Prokash) Zoerb and Judith (Prokash) Endle of Madison. I am the daughter of Judith. My family has more information if needed. Frank and Catherine's graves are in the cemetary outside of Algoma. Thanks, Kirsten

I am a great, great granddaughter of Frank and Catherine Paape (please see my other post). Frank fought in the Battle of Nashville during the Civil War and your musket may have been used in that battle.

From what I can peice together, Ida's brother Edward is my great, great grandfather. He had a son (either named Clifford or John), who had a son, Ralph (my grandfather-married Arlene Butterfield). Ralph's first son was named Clifford John Paape (my uncle) and according to my aunt Brenda (Clifford's sister) he was named after both of his grandparents. I just don't know which is which. Anyways, I found this in a list of Commermerative Biographical Records. Thought you might be interested.

FRANK PAAPE, who has been iden-
tified with the interests of Ahna-
pee township, Kewaunee county,
for almost the past twenty years,
as one of her thrifty farmer citizens, is
a native of Germany, born January 4,
1832, in the Kingdom of Prussia. He is
a son of Gottlieb and Flora (Hinz) Paape,
also natives of Prussia, the former of
whom was a miller by occupation. Both
are now deceased. Frank, our subject,
was the youngest child in their family of
five children, one of whom is deceased,
the others being Fred and Charles, of
Prussia; Flora, Mrs. Charles Hench, of
Milwaukee, and Frank.

Our subject was educated in the com-
mon schools of his native country, and
when fourteen years of age was appren-
ticed to a carpenter and joiner, complet-
ing his trade when nineteen years of age,
and following it untihhis emigration to the
United States, in 1857. Soon after his
arrival in this country he located in the
city of Milwaukee, Wis., where he fol-
lowed his trade some years, and then en-
gaged in mercantile pursuits until 1875,
when he sold his business in Milwaukee
and moved to the town of Ahnapee,
Kewaunee county. Purchasing the farm
he still owns and occupies, he has since
been engaged in general agriculture, and
is one of the successful farmers of his
section. Mr. Paape's marriage to
Katharine Solterback took place in Mil-
waukee May I, 1858; she is the mother
of sixteen children, seven of whom are
deceased, and nine living, as follows:

Bertha, Mrs. Joseph Roberts, of Birnam-
wood, Wis.; Charles, of Sturgeon Bay;
William, of Sturgeon Bay; Henry, of
Washburn, Wis. ; Amelia, Mrs. Ed.
Pepper, of Marinette, Wis.; Edward;
George; Ida, and Emma. Mrs. Paape is
the daughter of George and Margaret
Solterback, natives of Schleswig-Holstein,
where she was also born, on January lo,
1840. Politically Mr. Paape is independ-
ent, always supporting the best candidate.
The family are members of the Lutheran
Church of Ahnapee.

In 1864 Mr. Paape enlisted in Com-
pany G, Forty-fifth Wis. V. I., for one
year or during the war, and served some
eleven months, receiving an honorable dis-
charge in August, 1865; he was disabled
during his service. He is a member of
Joseph Andreag Post, G. A. R. , of
Ahnapee.
