Ozga

My grandfather Steve Ozga along with his 2 brothers Yurko(George), and Kost immigrated to Canada in the early 1900's. They had 1 sister Lucianka(Lucina) and their parents that remained in the Ukraine. The information that I have is that my grandfather's family origin is from the Pizny Mir, District or Powait of Sokal, Province of Galicia, Ukraine. At the time that he immigrated to Canada Galicia, Ukraine was under control of Austria Dolishna (Lower Austria). I am hoping that someone can provide me with more information with the family that remained in the Ukraine. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Jason

I am writing on behalf of my husband & sis in law who are looking for Ozgas in Poland as that's where they think their relatives are. We have no knowledge as to whether dad had any relloes here in Oz. We do know he had a bro whose name we do not know. But it's possible he had other siblings here or in Lublin. Jan Ozga was born on 15 March 1923, father Marcin Ozga, mother Maria Buczek. Jan lived in Blacktown and worked on the Snowy Mt scheme. My husband has had a stroke since but I would like to carry on this research.

The Ozga name is a name that dates back to the 1400's. There is about 4000 registered people in Poland with that last name and about 5000 in the world. Majority of Ozga names are registered in South Poland, around citys like Krakow(Cracow), Kielce and Tarnobrezg.

I speak polish. In the polish alphabet there is a letter "z" and a letter "z with dot over it"; the latter is called "zet".

According to Polish name expert Prof. Kazimierz Rymut, Ozga comes from a root oz*ga (I'm using z* to stand for the z with a dot over it, pronounced like the "s" in "measure"), which means "fire." It's a common name, as of 1990 there were 4,204 Polish citizens named Ozga and another 1,739 who bore the name in the form Oz*ga.

I am an Ożga. However, a couple of Ozgas I have spoken with are unaware of any distinction. My family tree can be traced back to World War II, and much history cannot be determined prior to the war. The more I research my origins the more I grow interested in my DNA.

Hi, Christina. My GF was Tomasz Ozga, born about 1891, son of Michal Ozga and Marianna Golis, all originally from the Lublin area of Poland. Tomasz emigrated to the US where he lived in Chicago. He had a brother named John but that's all I know about that particular branch of the family. Please let me know if anything sounds familiar.

Anita Ozga in New Jersey

Hello! My name is Tony Piscotta and I am a history teacher here at Hamilton West High School in New Jersey. I am about to begin a project with my US History I classes called "The First Class" which highlights the class of 1932 our school's first graduating class and what ever became of many of them.

One of the graduates that year was named Anita Ozga. While I realize this is a longshot, I thought that someone might have information about the person I am looking to locate.

Basically, we are trying to locate as many of these people as possible to build a database of these early graduates of our school as well as have one or two speak to our classes. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Tony Piscotta

I would be interested in the details you have. I am descended from Joseph Woche, Loch and Paulina (Apolonia) Ozga. I am told they used to have a farm around Willow Run Airpot around the Detroit Michigan area. They also had a bakery and a nearby road named for them. I would be interested if there is a connection.

Thank You.
