I looking for some information on a Michigan Ozanich (Ozanič) family.

Emil Ozanich born 14 Sep 1902 (Calumet, Houghton, MI). Emil married Louise O'Donnell and had 4 chidren. They lived in the Detroit area for a time but returned to Houghton County in the 1940's.

Emil's mother Francisa Chopp (Čop) and father Mat Ozanich (Ozanič) were married 11 Nov 1896 (Red Jacket, Houghton, MI)

Mat and Francisa listed place of birth as Austria on the marriage license but I suspect they were ethnic Croatians.

Mat's parents were Louis Ozanič and Josepha Čop.
Francesa's parents were Simon Čop and Annie Gregorich.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions. I'm familiar with Finnish genealogy but I would appreciate any tips on Croation
searches.

They moved to Roslyn Wa. around 1934 and lived there until 1941 and then moved to Tacoma WA./ Seattle. William lived in Seattle until he died in 1984. I am Mary Ozanich Johnson, Williams daughter..does any of this sound familar. We are trying to find out how and when they came to th U.S.
We do not have birth certificates for Michael or Mary.Yugoslavia was part of Austria during the time they might have been in Yugoslavia so sometimes people think the name is Austrian not Croation...send any info. you have please. Thanks Mary Johnson

Mary,
This doesn't sound familiar to me. I will keep your names in mind as I continue to search. Matt Ozanich came here in the late 1800's but I haven't made any connections to Croatia yet. It certainly is possible that there is a link farther back in the "old country".
Just a note as you do research. "Red Jacket village" was a village "Calumet township" in "Houghton county". The name of "Red Jacket village" was changed to "Calumet village" in the 1929 but the township remained "Calumet township". Many people here still refer to regions of the township by the names: Red Jacket, Blue Jacket, Yellow Jacket, Red Jacket Shaft.
Good hunting.

Goodness 4 years and still haven't connect Matt (Mate, Matia, Mato in Croatian) to Croatia!

There are several records for Mate OZANIC(H) arriving at the Port of NY as a US Citizen returning to Calumet, with an age that may be correct for your Matt. I recall that the place in Croatia listed on the manifest was Lokve where COP name is common.

there is a record at Ellis Is for

Name: Franciska Cop
Arrival Date: 6 Jul 1892
Estimated birth year: abt 1873
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Bremen
Place of Origin: Austria
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Austrian
Ship Name: Elbe
destination Red Jacket traveling with 11 month old Josef.

FYI Croatia is one of the oldest countries in Europe dating back to the unification of The Kingdom of Croatia in 925 AD by King Tomislav, that Kingdom would last until 1918. Around 1100 the last ethnic Croatian king died with no heir and Croatian nobility voted to recognize the King of Hungary as King of Croatia, in 1523 the Croatian-Hungarian army was defeated at the Battle of Mohac by the Turks, and much of Croatia (but not the area where COP and OZANIC lived) was occupied by the turks... in the 1700s Croatia and Hungary was liberated by Austria... and Croatia was a seperate kingdom until the end of WW I (1918) when it would be placed into a new kingdom called Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes...then in 1929 the Serb king declared a royal dictatorship and abolished the name of Croatia from the map... in 1939 Croatia would regain some of the autonomy it had enjoyed under Austria-Hungary... but it was too late and WW II began shortly afterward.

I am researching my Grand father, Andrew Ozanich, and have come across a W W 1 registration card which states on it his nearest relative is Matt Ozanich from Copper Range, MI. My Grand Father was living in Hibbing, Minnesota at that time. The card shows he is from Austria and an alien.
I am wondering if Andrew and Matt could be cousins, or what? If we could share information that would be great.

My Grandfathers name was Andrew Ozanich, and my grandmothers name was Paver. I don't know if this is the same Ozanich or not. They moved to Michigan from Minnisota in 1917 as far as I can tell. I was told that my father was two when they moved. They lived in the Paw Paw Michigan area. I would be interested if this is the same Ozanich.

Hi,
I think this must be a different family. I don't see any connection with my Ozanich family. Best of luck with you search.

I wanted to reply because I recognize the Paw Paw location for the Ozanich family.

My father, John Ozanich, just passed away this past May; but, he talked about his father, Matt, who used to travel to Paw Paw to visit an Ozanich family there. I also believe the family used to bring truckloads of grapes up to the UP to sell? Does that sound familiar?

Hello, I do not remember my family ever taking grapes anywhere, but I do know my grandfather had a vineyard. There were quite a few vineyards in the area, and I know there were other Ozanich families in the area. I do not remember if any of them had grape vineyards. they were second cousins to me, and I remember they lived across the street from my grandparents on a lake.

Well, it's probably the same family because the vineyard was correct! Dad mentioned the vineyard.
