I'm interested in any family members who are familiar with the name Oyakawa. My grandparents immigrated from Okinawa to Kauai in 1920. Thank you.

Hi, I am just barely getting started on my family history, but I saw your post. My husband is Kyle Oyakawa, born in Hawaii and we have only two generations back. You may be able to help us more than we can help you. Good luck with your search.

My name is Cathy. My grandparents migrated from Okinawa to Kauai in the early 1920s. There could be a relation. Would it be possible you could let me know their names? I'm very grateful for your e-mail. I've been caring for my dad this year, so many apologies for the delay in responding. I had asked ancestry.com to post the Oyakawa name because I want to find family. thanks very much.

Thank you much for your e-mail. I had requested this site to start a board with the Oyakawa name because it is a unique name and I was having difficulty finding any information. I currently live in Kansas City, by my mom's family lives in Kauai, Oahu, and California. I'm wanting to generate a family tree since I lost my mom seven years ago. Her name was Ethel Akino Oyakawa (yes, don't ask me how she was tagged with "Ethel." You may have more generation information than I do. I know my grandfather's younger brother came over, but I don't have his name yet. My grandparents migrated from Okinawa to Kauai in the early 1920s. Did your husband's family come over from Japan or have they always been in Hawaii? Thanks so much. Cathy

My Husband is Kyle Kenji Oyakawa His father is Richard Haruo Oyakawa (he lives in Hawaii) -
Richard is the son of Taro Oyakawa Born 22 May 1890 in Honolulu and was married to Sadako Kaneshiro born about Oct 1918 in Okinawa and that is all we have. Don't know if it helps or not.
Do you happen to know if Oyakawa means "by the river" someone told me that and I wondered if it was true, it made my kids smile when I told them that

Janie, you have an absolutely beautiful family!! I now see there are tons of Oyakawa's listed under SSN, etc. My grandfather was Hoie Oyakawa. I have a photo of his family taken when my mom was 5 (1935) I can attach as soon as I locate it. "Roots" is very very important to me. Right now I'm caring for my dad, he's in a care center, and because I believe we're all connected somehow, this is an important task for me. I have started the pedigree and in due course will add to it. You are so beautiful.

Hi, my name is Norman Oyakawa and I'm from Lihue, Kauai. I've met a couple of guys from Kaumakani,Kauai who said their mothers maiden name is Oyakawa and we must be related because the name is so rare. This was over 20 years ago and only recently I told my sister in Honolulu about it. She is going to research it to see if there is a connection with our family. She made our family tree and does her research at Bringham Young University Geeology department and the main public library in Honolulu. She also made several trips to Okinawa and once to South America to do research. My fathers first cousin, Yoshi Oyakawa from Kona, Hawaii won a olympic gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke in 1952 in Helsinki, Finland. We could be related If you can make a connection to Yoshi Oyakawa.
