Hello All,

I have a Mercy or Mary Oxenbridge in my family tree who married in Ticehurst, East Sussex in June 1581. She married an Anthony Barnes also from that Parish and died there in 1629. I have checked the Parish Registers for Ticehurst and surrounding Parishes at the East Sussex Record Office but cannot find any mention of her baptism there although there are various baptisms for children born to a John Oxenbridge in the 1560’s in Ticehurst and also a daughter born to a Goddart Oxenbredge in 1582.

Haa anyone by any chance come across a baptism for a Mercy or Mary Oxenbridge c1565?

Any help in tracing her would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Daphne Croft

Lorraine,
I saw your message regarding the Oxenbridge family. My grandfather Edmund Oxenbridge also came from UK in the 1800's. He came to Australia and finally settled in New Zealand. There are a number of Oxenbridge relatives both in Victoria & NSW Australia as well as Tasmania. Indeed there are a number of relatives also still in New Zealand. My mother was the only daughter of Edmund Oxenbridge and she married my father Harry Goffin in New Zealand. I am now living in Australia. I suspect Mary and Edmund were on the same ship and will in fact do some further research on this. Feel free to email me when you get this message.

I am looking for relatives of Charlotte Stone Oxenbridge born abt. 1833 etchingham Sussex. She married George Gillett and had 8 known children, then married William Meppem.

Does she fit into any of your family lines? have not been able to find her parents or siblings so far.

Did you try Family Search? Its always a good place to start ( www.familysearch.org ).

It gives this for her baptism, from the Etchingham parish register:

Name: Charlotte Stone Oxenbridge
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 17 Aug 1834
baptism/christening place: ETCHINGHAM,SUSSEX,ENGLAND
mother's name: Eliza Oxenbridge
indexing project (batch) number: K14803-1
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 1067148

What this tells you is that there is no father named, she was illegitimate.

However, my "guess" would be that her father's name was "Stone", although you would be very lucky to ever find any proof of that, unless her mother did later marry him.

And for her birth, you can only assume it was "before" 17 Aug 1834. Could be anything from hours to years before, though about 3-6 weeks is common.

The same site may well yield further info on her mother.
