Hello

I live in Hathern near Loughborough in Leicestershire. We have been clearing out at our local Baptist church and have found a family Bible belonging to an Oxby family who lived in our village for several years. We wonder if you might be interested in the Bible since anyone with links to the Oxby's of Kinoulton is almost certainly related to the Oxby's who eventually farmed in Hathern.

We believe there are no living descendants of this family in the area. However, from the details in the family Bible we know that Robert Oxby m. Sarah Abbott 1st March 1808 in Grantham. Robert and Sarah moved to Kinoulton in Notts before 1830. They had several sons, some of whom married and stayed in the Kinoulton area.

The Bible focusses on their son John (a wheelwright and born in 1811 in Carlton, Lincolnshire) who married Sarah Parkinson of Sileby in Leicestershire on 12th Nov 1830. Several of John and Sarah's sons married and settled in the Kinoulton area, but their 3rd Son, Thomas, eventually settled in the Barrow Upon Soar area of Leicestershire (a few miles over the county border). He married Emma Simpkin from Barrow upon Soar in 1865. In 1881 he was a farmer at Newyork Farm near Seagrave. His oldest (and only surviving) son, John, married Elizabeth Peat at Long Whatton (Leicestershire).

Thomas and Emma had several daughters, but only one, Ann Emily, married Dan Brundye (sp?)(in Edmonton in Canada in 1911). According to the family Bible she was about 41 years old when she married so it's possible she had no children.

John and Elizabeth had two sons, William George (who may have been called George) b.1899 and John Francis (1901 - 1930). John (a farmer)and Elizabeth settled in Hathern, and and far as we can tell, George also became a farmer and lived in Hathern, but it's possible that he had no children.

The Bible also records the death of (Uncle) George in May 1924. He was Thomas' brother, and was probably a farmer. He lived in the Kinoulton area.

I have carried out some basic research into the family using the 1841 - 1901 census returns and the LDS IGI so can let you have any findings that might help in your own research.

Thank you
Ruth Stephens

Wow...I should check this website more often. I am excited about your findings as I am Linda Oxby Mangolt, from Ontario Canada, a direct descendant of John and Sarah--from their son Robert, who came to Canada in the 1850s with his brother Charles. He married Ann Kemp, also from Kinoulton/Kinolton.

Marilyn Brundige Lamont is in the same generation as me, across the country in British Columbia. Here Anne Emily Oxby was a daughter of another brother, Thomas.

The bible would be a real treasure to our Kinoulton genealogist, Keith Oxby, also a descendant of John and Sarah, but from the eldest son George, who stayed in England.

Thank you for your information and I hope to hear from you eventually. Linda

I am very interested in the information you posted and the bible mentioned and would love to correspond further. My father was was raised by Annie (Oxby) and Daniel Brundige in northern Saskatchewan. My father now 80 years of age is very excited in regards to the existance of Annie's family's bible. I have been researching the Oxby Brundige lines and have in my collection, 500 postcards which belonged to Annie (Oxby) Brundige. Some of these are available for viewing online at brundige.ca I hope to correspond further with you and can be contacted via by regualar email address: lamontm@shaw.ca

I am very interested by this. I have compiled a family tree of the Abbotts and Oxbys. I see that there is a Councillor Oxby at Kinoulton today.

Are you located in the Kinoulton area? I am writing from Canada, but I have an ancestor in the family tree named Sarah Abbott, married Robert Oxby at Grantham March 1st, 1808.

Their grandson, Thomas Oxby married Emma Simpkin of Barrow Leicester on May 15, 1865.

Do you have any leads on the Whelpton family?

I live in London, and am researching the family of your Sarah Abbott (I have published details of her ancestry and cousins in The Danbys, 1993; www.jmwturner.org). I have made contact with the Oxbys at Kinoulton. I don't know about the Whelpton family.

I have loads of Oxbys in my family trees - I run one tree which includes my father's family in it but the other is just for my mother's side it which we are most particularly interested. My mother was a Nellie Fairholm but was previously Annie Oxby (parents John Oxby and Sarah Martha Archer farmers of Hollow Hill)and married a Reuben Fairholm. I have a wheelwright called John Oxby who lived at Pear Tree Farm Kinoulton.

Hello Janet,
I don't always check this site, but was being "flagged" re Phil Oxby.
My name is Linda Oxby Mangolt and I am writing from Midland, Ontario, Canada.

Right off the top, I recognize names from my family tree...John Oxby from Pear Tree Farm was my great-great-great grandfather....his son, Robert was my great-great-grandfather, who came to Canada with his brother, Charles in the 1850s.

I keep in touch with Keith Oxby from outside of the Kinoulton area, and has been doing genealogy since his school days.

Where are you writing from and what other information can we share? BFN Linda

Hi Linda
I am writing from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, UK. My daughter and I run an international patient support charity for people with a very very rare genetic cancer syndrome which we think has either come down through the Oxbys (or through Sarah Martha Archer wife of John Oxby - the latter was b 1862 d 1927) My personal inclination is the Oxbys. It now transpires that whilst two of my mother's sisters lived to 79 and 90 they did actually have the disease and passed it on. (Mum died at 57, one of her other sisters at, I think, 35 and their mothers at c.37). This meant that family members went undiagnosed and last year we lost a 35 year old to what was almost certainly the illness - her father is now embarking on his own testing. I wonder, would you be prepared to email me at janetpfrench@btinternet.com and we could talk more. I am particularly interested in causes of death. My daughter and I are experts in this field and it could be quite helpful. I shall understand if you would rather have no further dialogue but hope that you are willing to help. My daughter is likely to be travelling, on charity business, to Chicago in 2 weeks and we were hoping that if we could locate Oxbys there, there might be an opportunity to meet. You might know of some? Janet
