My Grandmothers family was from Ottersberg (Bremen) Her father Johan went with his brother to America in the 1800s and bought alot of property in New York City. My Grandmothers name was Louise Sophie Charlotte Otterstedt. She married Henrik Schloh and had 6 Daughters- Anneliese, Hildegard, Erica, Ingeborg, Louise, and Dorathea .Johan had two children by his first wife who were Louise and John they were both born in the US but went back to Germany when she was four. John was the oldest and Louise was born in 1885. Johan made his fortune in America and went back to Ottersberg and built a 26 room house which is now the town hall. His wife died and he got remarried to Sophia Schloh and had two more children Ida and Eric. Johans brother stayed in america and all I know about him is that he owned alot of property in the Pallisades area of New Jersey. All of Johans children eventually went back to America. Ida married in Germany and had two children Marlies and Gerverdt and settled in Rego Park New York. Her Husband died of cancer and she (being an accomplished opera singer) taught singing and piano. She moved to Princeton for awhile and eventually moved back to Rego Park. My mother said she was a wonderful person. Eric never married. John married and had three or four children one of them was also named John. In 1932 my grandfather had copies of the Von Otterstede coat of arms made(Wappen) and gave one to each of his daughters. I have one of those copies and I would be happy to scan and email this to anyone interested

Hello Dorothea,

I just read your message which was posted under ouderkirk instead of Otterstedt. It therefore took a while for me to happen to see it.

The Otterstedt family from Bremen area is linked to my family OTTERSTEDDE from Muenster area but those two branches separarted some 500 years ago. I have contacted recently some members of the Otterstedt family in order to find out more and to exchange genealogical data. But this has not produced reliable results so far.

I know that a number of family members of the OTTERSTEDT family from Ottersberg/Otterstedt/Bremen immigrated to the US, but I would have to know more facts before I would be in the position to draw lines between them and the family.

It seems there is no connection between the names you mentioned and my father resp. grandfather and the Otterstedde family from Muenster.
I would appreciate if you could give me more data like Birthplace and -date, Spouse etc. in order to investigate deeper.

Please answer directly to Otterstedde-Muenster@t-online.de

Hope to hear from you soon
Reiner
