I may not be of any help, but I am also looking for more of my Oubre relatives. My grandfather is Leroy Oubre from New Orleans Louisiana. I have plenty of relatives from New Iberia,
Plaquemines Parish, and St. Charles Parish.

I appreciate it if you could tell me a little more about your
family history.

Thanks!
Danielle

just for the record, first of all "ourbre" is a slave name. French of course. all white and black oubres are related somewhere down the line. that is why most of my oubre famlies are light complexed with wavvy or curly hair. my great grandfather was french, and an oubre. many oubres are from louisiana. when we had an oubre family reunion in 1987, almost 1500 oubres showed up and no white oubres wanted to participate in the reunion. the oubre family around the united states are very little, and most of them have to have some kind of connection some how. and all of my family is creole. i hope that was some help, but most of the older oubres are dying out. good luck cousin!!!!!!!

Just for clarification, the surname Oubre is a French-Acadian influence on the German name of Huber. So the Oubre line actually is a German one. The common ancestor that most Oubre's share is Jacob Huber, who came to America in 1721 with his wife and son(Christophe) aboard the ship The St. Andre. They came to America as part of the John Law Concessions, where they would farm the land along the Mississippi River to supply New Orleans with food and have a chance to earn their land after a set number of years.

As to your statement that black and white Oubres are related at some point, that may or may not be true. Some of the early descendants of Jacob Huber owned slaves, so there is definitely the possibility of the female slaves bearing the children of their owner and carrying the surname of Oubre. If there is a connection, it probably depends on the particular family. In my Oubre line, I have not found proof of a connection, although the early German Huber/Oubres married the Acadians(Cajuns) that came from Nova Scotia. Some of the early wives of the Huber/Oubre men were from France as well, so there definitely could be a Creole connection.

It's an interesting discussion.

Take Care
