Ottley's of Dublin - Robert, Ann & Mary Ellen Ottley

My G-Grandmother Mary Ellen Ottley was born 1873 in Dublin city. She married Robert Blake (1898), was widowed, then married James Lord in 1901. Her parents were Robert Ottley (address Clontarf) and Ann Daley from Crumlin, they married in 1872, Rathfarnham.
I have found Mary Ellen's baptismal record however, unable to trace her birth record. Any information on the Ottley's of Dublin would be most appreciated.

Hello, Amaiya. Thanks for writing. Yes, my family does come from Tobago as well as Trinidad. Please show this message to your father, too. My dad was Neville Ethelbert Ottley (1914-2010).His dad was Joseph Ethelbert Ottley (1871-1924 or 25). He was born in Tobago and moved to Trinidad. Joseph's father was one of several Thomas Ottleys who lived in Tobago. He was alive as late as 1918 or later. I don't know if he was born in Tobago, or in Grenada, or St. Vincent, or Barbados, or Barbuda, or in Antigua, because in the 1700s the Ottleys moved around in all the islands. Thomas Ottley had at least 3 sisters, Taitie married a Liverpool, then another one married a McPherson, another married a Chevalier, and a fourth sister married an O'Keefe. I think he had a brother named John Christopher Ottley also. Please ask your dad or grandpa or your great-grandpa to read this, and let me know if they know any these names in their family tree. Thank you for writing, and please visit my school's website at www.ottleymusic.org. Have a great day.

Seems I have the same Ottleys as the previous reply. Alfred Ottley born 1878, Stondon Massey, Essex, son of Henry Ottley born 1845 in Kelvedon Hatch. Henry married Eliza Grayling born 1848, born Navestock, Essex. She previously married William Campen which gave me problems as it seems my maternal grandparents were 2nd cousins.

Ottley's of Trinidad

Been to Port of Spain in April 2012 and have recorded many Ottley/Otley entries from registers in Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral. I attach them here - the "(No. )" at the end refers to photos I took of the entries if anyone is interested.
I discovered my Ottley gg-grandfather was Robert Ottley married to Marion. They had 4 children that I found in the registers: my ggrandmother Gladys Imogene b Oct. 6, 1887; her brother Reginald Randolph b May 11, 1889; another brother Robert b Sept 17, 1892 and a sister Carmen Edna Ottley b July 20, 1897. All were baptised at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in Port of Spain. Robert Ottley (Senior) was listed as a Mariner, a Butler, and a carpenter. They lived at 69 Bassilon St., East Dry River, then 69 B Basilon St. again during this period.
Please get in touch if you find relatives I'd be glad to know so I can claim as relatives or eliminate people from the list. I am also willing to send the photos unless there is an avalanche of emails, lol. smjwatkins@yahoo.com Cheers, Susan

Fred Ottley -newspaper article

I found this in a newspaper article:
The Lake County Star
Crown Point, Indiana
Sept 27, 1895 (Friday morning)
"Nipped in the Bud"
Sometime ago Fred Ottley a young man was placed in jail here for burglary at Whiting, and it was soon found that he was a desperate character. He was wanted at Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a greater crime and while the authorities in Iowa were getting requisition papers old man Ottley turned up here and tried to get the boy's bail lowered so that he could bail him and let him skip. When he found that would not work, he began smuggling saws, files and other tools into jail to the boy and it was found out just in time by Sheriff Hayes. Considerable sawing had been done and the old man had made two trips to Chicago for better saws. About the time the Marshall of Cedar Rapids came with requisition papers and took the young man, Hayes arrested the old man for putting the tools in the jail and he is now holdint down the boy's job, . . .
(my copy from the microfilm doesn't show the rest, but you can get it from the Crown Point library)

Hello F. Fayola,

Glad to hear from you. Yes, my Dad's line came from Tobago, and Richard Ottley (1730-1775--born in St. V and from England) was in Tobago from Saint Vincent and Grenada in 1763, according to the late historian, Carlton Ottley.

My great-grandfather's name was Thomas Ottley, born around 1840, and was alive as late as 1918 for one of my dad's cousin's knew him personally. We do not know whether he was born in Tobago, or Saint Vincent, or even in Barbuda/Antigua, for all of the Ottleys at that time traveled quite a bit. There are several Thomas Ottley names that came from Saint Vincent at that time.

My grandfather was born in Tobago, and went to Trinidad when he was 16. His name was Joseph Ethelbert Ottley (1871-1924). My dad's name is Neville Ethelbert Ottley, born in Trinidad in 1914, and living with my mom here in Maryland. I plan to go down to Tobago sometime this fall and do further research on this family, hoping to find some more information that can connect us to the Ottleys that were from England and Scotland. Music, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Business and Education (teaching) are strong in the family.
I can give you some info on the Scottish ottley's.

Original Ottley on Scotland married Susannah Logie c 1770..3 Sons, John , James (my ancestor), Thomas and Margaret.

Thomas (c1774) married Elizabeth Reid in Ayr 18 Mar, 1796. Settled Paisley Scotland. The name Thomas seems to have been carried down thru the years, but I have not researched beyond the 1850's.

James had 8 daughters, one of whom, Sarah married John Shaw Thom and migrated to Australia in the 1850's. This is my line. You may find more if you subscribe to Scotlandspeople. Also there are some listed on Familysearch.com.

Regards.

Thomas Ottley married Doris Bithell in 1937 in Newcastle under Lyme in Staffordshire (Newcastle L. 6b 217)

If you are certain that Doris was from Wrexham then she is probably the Doris Bithell, born 1911, Holt, Wrexham (Wrexham 11b 221).

Copies of her birth and marriage certificates should give you their parents' names to get you back further.

i will like to know more about this because this story sounds very familiar. My mom always tells me of my late grandfather's heritage. she did mention that he came from a line of four (4) brothers from Scotland and England and i think 2 or 3 of them migrated to the Caribbean. i am not sure what my great grandfather's name is. he married my grandmother while living in St Vincent in the 1950's. i also have an aunt and an uncle who is from Aruba too.if this is so then i think i may have found a very important link in my past. please respond if this is so
thanks
