Andy, I am BTO's great grandson.
He is the son of Thomas Oswell. He was Deputy Chief Constable of Staffordshire and actively involved with the South Staffordshire (may have been the Lt Colonel) Regiment.
He did have children who went to South Africa - Garnet who settled around Durban and Florence (who married James McLaren of Jo'burg) and had 3 children.
My grandfather was Benjamin Lister Oswell the oldest child.
I have BTO's police truncheons and a few other bits that belonged to him. I moved to Canada from the UK 40 years ago.
I have a pretty full family tree that goes back 3 or 4 generations before BTO. I have a cousin in BC (Canada) who did a lot of research and there is also an active tree on geni.com managed by Norman James Alexander Jamieson, he's South African. There is also a tree on ancestry.com & and myheritage.com.
If you want access send me email at john@winntec.com
All the best
John Winn Oswell

Hi!! Sorry I haven't replied to your message sooner. I only found it now (I don't often go on the website). Yes I am most proudly a descendant of BTOswell. I'm descended from his 2nd son Thomas. He and all his family emigrated to South Africa after thw Boer War, and his descendants have remained here ever since. How are you related to BTOswell? This is so wonderful .... We must keep in contact. Angie

I happened to check an old e-mail acct. this AM, and saw that reply's had been left on this board, to my 2003 post.

I, long ago, verified 'Rudolph Hamilton Oswell' (b. 1/2/1882 and d. 10/5/1969), as the 'Oswell' whom Pearle married (Had always heard him refered to as simple, "Uncle Cap"), and while I do not know their exact marriage date, I did find their marriage license application was dated 2/27/1926. They were married at Mobile, Ala. There are two other marriage license applications on file for a 'Rudolph H. Oswell' at Mobile. One dated 8/28/1902 (Rosa May McMahon); and another dated 6/24/1930 (Margaret W. Puryear). I cannot explain the 1930 license... perhaps a error in date, or two different gentlemen.

In addition, there are three listed for Clarence, one for Jacque, one for Charles, and one for William Hamilton. Can provide dates and brides names, if needed.

Willie Pearle Arrant was the daughter of John Anderson Arrant and Nancy ("Nannie") Elizabeth Bush. She, Cap, and her mother are all buried at Mobile, in Pine Crest Cemetery. Photo's of their markers can be found online, at Find A Grave.com.
Rudolph Hamilton Oswell married Willie Pearl Arrant in Mobile, Alabama about 1925. They had 3 sons: Gene, Charles Moxley, and Jacque. Rudolph Oswell was in the tugboat business in Mobile for many years, and was said to know every bend on the river between Mobile and Demopolis. He was credited with pioneering in the use of diesel tugs, with the reforesting of hardwood bottomlands, and with building the area's first concrete pontoon boats (known as gunboats) for use in log tows.

What information do you need? I was married to Jacque and have most of the history of the Oswell's Rudolph Hamilton was Jacque's father married to Willie Pearl Arrant. Their sons were Jacque Le Moyne, Gene Cleveland, and Clarence Moxley. His first wife was Rosa Mahon, Rudolph II was her son, RHO married Lula, her sister and had Charles ? (Otis) not sureand William. Rudolph his father born in 1852 married Sarah Grist and her Sister (I think) was Edith Grist Moxley which we visited when I was young in Nashville.
I think like you, Nicholas was married to two Elizabeth's, and had two families with the same names. I had always heard this was true while I was in the family. I can find no record of this and am stumped.

My great-grandfather, Nicholas Oswell, was born in Baden, Germany about 1820-23. I do not know the original spelling of his surname, but suspect something like Oschwald. He married Elizabeth Coltharp in Nashville, TN in 1850, and they had a son named Rudolph about 1852. This Rudolph Oswell married Sarah Grist about 1880 and they had a son named Rudolph Hamilton Oswell in 1882. Rudolph Hamilton Oswell was a tugboat captain and businessman in Mobile, AL, where he died about 1969. Rudolph Hamilton Oswell's first wife was named Rose, and they had a son named Rudolph born in 1907. Rudolph Hamilton Oswell had a brother (Charles Nelson Oswell), who named his son Evander Rudolph Oswell (b. 1905).

Nicholas Oswell served in the Confederate Army and lived in Mississippi after the Civil War. He married another wife named Elizabeth and had a son named Rudolph D. Oswell, who was born in 1868. Rudolph D. Oswell was my grandfather.

I have compiled a history on the family relationships of the Nicholas Oswell born in Baden about 1820. He married Elizabeth Coltharp in Nashville about 1848 and they had two children named Rudolph and Catherine. Nicholas enlisted in the CSA army in 1860. He married another Elizabeth in Mississippi after the war, and the first two children of that union were also named Rudolph and Catherine. Nicholas apparently never returned to Tennessee. My grandfather Rudolph was born about 1867, and his brother Walter (your paternal great-grandfather) was born about 1878.
While researching the surname of Oswell, I came across your post. My paternal grandfather was Roy Oswell and his father was Walter Scott Oswell who lived in Valliant, Oklahoma with his wife, Virginia. His father was Nicholas Oswell who was born about 1820 in Baden, Germany. He was married to Elizabeth Cottharp (Coltharp). According to the 1880 census, their children were Rudolf, Otto?, Ardell, Nicholas, and Walter. There was no mention of a Catherine. In 1880, they lived in Mississippi in the county of Monroe.
Are these the same people that you described in your post? After reading your information, I'm not sure which Elizabeth was Walter's mother. I have had a very difficult time finding information on this side of my family tree. Any help you can give me would be so greatly appreciated.
JK
