They combined their interest in antiques and their desire to work together and opened an antique store, The Bedroom, which they operated for over 20 years. Joan also volunteered as a social worker at Esperanza.

Joan will be remembered for her unceasing curiosity in people and places. She loved to travel, was a marvelous cook, had many friends and was always a great listener. Joan will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by two children, Jane and Seth; and her parents, Max and Hannah Osterman.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Richard; her two devoted daughters, Ann of Santa Fe, and Peggy of Concord, Mass.; her beloved grandson, Alexander of New York City; her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Albert Borowitz of Cleveland, Ohio and her nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held.

Greene

jrkish43, the man you are talking about sounds nearly identical to my great-grandfather, Albin Osterman.

He emigrated from Sweden before WWI to Chicago.

He had a few children with the last name "Oman". This wasn't because he changed their name from Osterman though. Rather, they were his step children and Oman was their birth father's name.

My mother, Lorraine, was married to a Gordon Green and an Amos Napier. Her mother and father or my grandparents' name was Osterman and lived in Philadelphia. There are also other names that come to mind. One is Burdine Silcox. The others are David Silcox and Edith Hetrick. I believe Edith and Burdine were sisters of Lorraine, but, I cannot confirm that information. Anway, I am trying to locate any surviving members of that family who may tell me about other relatives who live in Philadelphia Pennslyvania and the surrounding area.

Osterman from Maryland

While reading over my post, I realize that i was unclear about an important point.

On the 1930 census, Joseph and Anna Osterman had two children, Francis (Frances?) and Minnia. This is the leap of faith that I took to assume that this Minnia is my grandmother.

Joseph's father, Samuel, had another child, whose name was Katherine, making her Joseph's sister.

I'm sorry for the confusion.

Osterman from Maryland

Wow! It seems like this is a very common surname, either because of the size of the family, or because everyone decided to adopt the name.

So far, though, I have found no connection to my own family, though.

Here is what I know as fact: My grandmother's name was Minerva/Mickey/Minna Osterman. She was born on October 20, 1922, and passed away January 20, 1991. She lived in Philadelphia and married my grandfather, Herbert Rothman, and after WWII, lived in Levittown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They had two children, Joseph and my mother, Cyndi.

Here is what I have found, though it is somewhat unsubstantiated. I know that my grandmother's mother was born in Maryland. According to the 1930 U.S. census, there is a Joseph Osterman who lived in Philadelphia, married to an Anna. Joseph Osterman was born in Spitalfields, Middlesex, England to Samuel and Julia (nee Van Gilder) Osterman. They had a daughter, Katherine.

Samuel Osterman's father was Louis Oesterman, Originally from Holland, emigrating to England sometime before 1861. Samuel had ten siblings (that I know of); Rebecca, Martha, Joseph, Solomon, Lipman, Amelia, Juliea, Annie, Issac, and Otto.

Most of this information I had gleaned off of another family tree, the Bensusan family tree, and therefore do not know how accurate the information is. I do know, however, that the Bensusan family is very involved in genealogy and have even published a book.

Nevertheless, I was wondering if anyone has any confirmed connection wtih my grandmother, and if they can substantiate any of this information.

One more point. Though I have noticed that many of your relatives have come from Austria/Germany/etc., I have also found some that have mention that their ancestors had emigrated there from Holland. Interesting.

Anyway, I am very interested in finding my roots. Thank you.

(If anyone does have information about Joseph and Anna Osterman from Philadelphia, I have hit a wall as to Anna's maiden name.)

RUDOLPH JOSEPH OSTERMAN ...OSTERMAN FAMILY...OSTERMANN ANCESTRY

I am looking to find any info on Rudolph J Osterman. All I know is he married Clare P. Mellon In New Jersy or Philadelpphia. I never met him and neither did my dad and his brothers. I am just trying to find stuff out.

I know my grandmother told me that when they first came to this country they had a store and had to legally shorten thier last name from Ostermann to Osterman. They were decendants of Austria-Hungary I believe. Any help would be great. I know this is a wide topic but None of us know. SHE kept many secrets.
