Hi my last name is Orum and I live in Wyoming but my family moved here in the late 1970's from Texas. There is a lot of Orum's there in/around the Dallas area. I haven't searched for much yet on my name, but my great grandfather's name was Lawayne Orum if anyone knows that name?

Hello,
My name is Robert Oram and I am a Descendant of Andrew Oram,who first appears in Talbot, MD about 1655. His children lived in MD and then in NJ, Penn, and NY. There were many variations of that name until 1935, when spelling of the last names became standardized. My wife and I have spent over 40+ yrs researching our particular line through Public Records, Church Records, Graveyard Plot Cards, and Wills. We know they came here on a Grant from England and owned a Ship that traveled to and from Jamaica- so they may have been involved in Illegal activities, but we are still looking.
Just figured I would connect with another "Oram/Orem/Orum.

This Orum is decendant from the Dannish through England for the colonie mid 1700's. Presently this branch lives in Texas and Oklahoma from Alabama after the Civil War.
Prior from Georgia and the Carolinas probably entered through Baltimore, MD. Oscar

You're welcome.

Loads of Orum's in the UK especially William Henry Orum! That's why I can't pin down a death Reg for him. LOL! I know his wife Mary was a widow when she died yet still can't find him for sure. Transcription errors don't help nor the fact that many there are many Orams too.

Broken hill is in Australia NSW where the Australian branch of the Orum family lived in the early days of Aust settlement. we descend from the Danish Orums. I am not sure if we are connected. Orum is an unusual name however. But I was not aware that you were in the Uk.
If your ancestors were Danish then we are from the same roots but your William is not my Uncle.

Where is Broken Hill?

William Henry Orum and his wife Mary Elizabeth Slade lived in Lambeth area of London, England. Mary died in Southwark, London 1968.

Daughter Mary Elizabeth's death is Registered in 1977 Bedfordshire.
Daughter Alice Matilda died in 1928, Greenwich, London
daughter Phyllis died in Bristol 1981
Not found anything else yet on their daughter Winifred Mabel who was born 1910, London.

Peter Orum I, was born about 1785 in Maryland, according to the 1850 census. His children are named Peter II, born 1805, Catherine, born abt 1806, Lydia, born abt 1812, William, born 1816, Charles, born abt 1818, George, born 1822 and Elizabeth, born abt 1831. From Maryland this Orum family went to Pennsylvania, Virginia and Charles moved to Illinois.

Notes in the book is a family of Orums who lived near Athens, IL are late 1800 immigrants from Denmark, some other Orum/Oram/Oren families came from the British Isles.
Arthur Orem of Houston, TX made work books with the various spellings of the name Orum. His work book is filed with; Genealogy section Houston Public Library; Library of Bucks County, PA, Historical Society; Library of Montgomery Co., PA Historical Society; Library of State historical Society of Missouri, Columbia MO.

The 1790 census list Orum/Oram/Orem and various spellings in PA, Maryland, Virginia, Vermont, RI, NY and NC.

None of these Orum/Oram/Oren are of my line of Oram/Orum.
My line is of Samuel Oram, born in Ireland and living in Ohio by 1790. Samuel and his family moved to Kentucky and after his death in 1813 the family split with some staying in Kentucky and others moving to Indiana. Around 1900 the family begins using the spelling of Orum for the family name.

That's quite a surprise. Who was living in MD in 1785? According to everything I've learned they first came to this country from Norway in 1882. Could you tell me any more of what is in the book? Thanks. Jane

My ancestor, Karl Johan Frithiof Orum (19), emigrated from Oslo, Norway aboard the Geiser with brothers, Oscar (17), and Hakon (10). They arrived in NYC on 7/3/1882. Their destination was Chicago. Is there any mention of them in the book? Would appreciate any help. Thank you. Jane

The family tree can be found on the web. Google Orum - the O with a slash as in the Danish alphabet. A woman from Copenhagen has constructed a family tree. "Janus Orum" should get you to the family tree.

I was born Susan Orum. I understand the name is from Denmark. The origins date back to the 16th century when surnames became common. the name comes from a small village near Randers. The Danish name has A line through the O. We recently visited Orum and took photos. there is a detailed family tree which is available on the Internet. we have not put much information on ancestry as we have not had time since we arrived back in Australia. in time we can give you more information if you wish.

Jim, Long time since we met in Austin w/ the twins visiting Texas State. I have repeatedly make appointments with Gary to meet him when I was in Guthrie for the Scottish Rite Reunion in the Spring but they have not been kept. I would like very much to learn of our ancestory prior to Jonathan. I believe his father was Henry, mother Ann Ridgeley,he from SC and she from NC. John Orum (born 1832 in AL)w/ brothers moved from near Montgemery, Alabama to Texas in 1870's. He was oldest of 11 children of Jonathan (born 1801 in SC) and Mantha Corbett (born 1807 in NC) Johnathan for the oldest of 3 (?) children born to Henry and Ann Ridgely.

The book you are looking for is no longer in print. However, I have the contact info for someone who has a copy & is willing to look up SOME info. I do not know where you live, but there is a copy of the book in the MD Genealogy Library, since the family started there in 1635 with Andrew Oram. The standardization of spellings for last names did not occur until the 1930's, so there will be many variations in one families records. This posting was a long time ago, so I hope you are still around!

Bullock Co. Ala Orums

As far as I know I have no Orum connections. I am descended from the Barnett family who lived near the Orum family in High Log, now Bullock Co., Ala.

The High Log Cemetery was surveyed once a long time ago, a copy of that survey is on my site here: http://www.katscelticroots.com/highlog.htm

There are four Orum family members buried there. I've been trying to locate this cemetery, which also goes by the names Orum Cemetery and Black Cemetery, for many years and I finally found someone locally who can take me there.

We'll be taking our headstone cleaning gear so I hope to have some better images... but here's one that the lady sent to me ... the carving is gorgeous.

I live in Bristol UK. My maiden name was Orum. I am reserching my family tree in the UK but as yet not come across any in the USA. I would be interested to here from you as I am sure with all the Brothers, Sisters, etc. there would be some connection with the US.
A quick summery is

My Father Charles William Frederick Orum B1916 Bristol
His Father had the same name B1892 Cardiff Wales
His Father was Ernest Orum B 1868 Whitley Wiltshire
His Father was John Orum B 1847 Whitley Wiltshire
His Father was William Orum B 1818 Atworth Wiltshire
His Father was William B 1771

As they all had quite a few children I would not be suprised if they went to US.

Mary Elizabeth Slade is my grandfather's sister and she married William Henry Orum in 1902. They had at east 3 children that I know of. Mary, Alice and William. Were there any more?

I think John Wilbur Orum was my grandfather. My father's birth name was Arthur Martin Oruam but he or his mother (I'm not sure) had it changed to Martin Arthur Williams. He was the only child of Eva and Wilbur Oruam. He was born in New York in 1937.

I am unable to locate any death record for Karl in the Chicago or Cook County records. I was wondering if you know anything about a possible move to Wisconsin for some of these family members? My Orum's are also of Norwegian descent. My mother recorded their names as Karl Johan Fritz of Orum
and Henrietta Marie Hansen. Mother's notes said they immigrated from Oslo in 1863. Didn't know each other at the time but met and married in Chicago. I have not been able to find anything on them. Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated.

You are right in that hannah and peter where the parents. i have a book by Arthur Orum stating this. there are several books but i only have one. peter was born in maryland 1751. i'm trying to find where hios parents are from. i think scotland or they may be of some jewish desent. got any info?
