Deborah,
I am not sure if this is still a good email address because your posting I found on ancestry.com was from 2003, but here goes....
I am trying to break thru a brick wall and my clues have lead me to you. I have a long lost Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather named Samuel Bishop. He was born about 1820-1823 in Canada, and in 1850 lived in Chicago, 1860 in Milwaukee, 1870, and 1880 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. After 1880 I've lost him. He was married to Elizabeth (possible maiden name of Goode) who was also from Canada. I went to the a Family History Center at the Latter Day Saints Church and they did a search for me on my Samuel Bishop and he was linked to Joshua Bishop and Phoebe Orser in one of their member's trees. I did some research to verify this on my own, but I can't find anything about the Samuel who is the son of Joseph and Phoebe, to prove or disprove it's the same Samuel that I'm looking for. I thought you might know more...... ? Do you know anything about this family? I'd appreciate any help you could offer.

Michael Bishop
Madison, Wisconsin.

The Orser family arrived in NY in the mid 1600's but they did not use the surname Orser until some time in the late 1700's. Various spellings range from Aert Willemszen, Aerszen, Aertse, Auser and similar.

Also see Orser site on GenForum for more information.

Hi -

I'm new to tracing my family history and don't have a lot of information so far. However, I believe that I've managed to trace back to Joseph Orser/Aertse (~1723-1783) and Ann (Annetje Jurckse) Orser (~1726-??). I believe our family is descended from John Orser their eldest son who stayed behind in New York when they left for Canada.

As I've very early on in the process of tracing the family, any information that you have would be extremely helpful. This is pretty exciting for me, as most of the other branches of my family tree do not go back nearly this far.

Looking forward to talking with anyone - email: astoyan@gmail.com. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Ali Stoyan
Isaac Orser, Arthur Orser and James Bulyea
British Headquarter Papers # 8082

Information of James Bulyea a Native of the Manor of Cortlandt, Isaac Aerse
of the Manor of Philipsburgh, and Arthur Aerse of the same place.

That they were of the corps called DeLancey's Refugees, and by their
colonel's order above a month ago quitted the county of West Chester, and
have since spent their time on Long Island and York Island.
That yesterday three weeks, they cross'd in a boat from Long Island to
Frogs's Neck to visit their mothers, who then resided on the Neck and get
from them cloaths and some supply of provisions.
That they had scarcely landed and fastened the boat before they discerned
a party that were armed and commanded by Lt. Hill of Col. Sproat's Corps,
advancing towards them. Taking them to be Continental Soldiers, they put
off their boat, but were called back and fired upon, and verily believe had
thirty shot at the boat before she got to the Shore. The Party promised
before they landed that they would be well used and yet as soon as they were
landed they were beaten several blows, and had their cloaths or part of them
taken from them, vis: from James Bulyea, a pair of shoe buckles and a pair
of knee buckles, both of silver, a plated stock buckle, a pair of
stockings, a Manchester jacket and britches; and from Isaac Aerse a silk
handkerchief, a pair of fustian overalls, a pair of shoes and brass buckles;
and from Arthur Aerse a new Castor hat.
They then led them to a house possessed by Joseph Castin on Frog's Neck,
where they were detained that night, and conveyed them next morning to West
Chester Jail. This happened on a Thursday morning.
On the Saturday following they were taken out jail, and sent under a guard
to Frog's Neck, where they were allowed to get their things together, and
ordered to begone by that night, threatening that if found there afterwards
they should be treated as thieves and robbers.
They were twice examined before they were dismissed from jail by Mr.
Morris, who was stiled the judge. They were treated very civilly by him.
The scope of his questions respected their being out in service during the
war on the side of the Crown, and that cattle or other property had been at
any time taken, and he declared at the close that in his opinion none that
had been in arms for the King would be permitted to continue in the country.
James Buylea
Isaac Orser
Arthur Orser
Sworn the 19th June
1783 before me Wm Smith (Chief Justice)

I have other British Headquarter papers.

Kingston Chr. & Gazette, Saturday July 19, 1834 (pg. 3, col. 2)

Death by Lightning

On Tuesday evening last, Mrs. Zilpha Orser, aged 55 years, wife of Mr. Isaac Orser, one of the first settlers of the Upper Province, was killed by lightning at her dwelling house on Long Island, about 4 miles from Kingston. The electric fluid entered the top of one of the rafters of the house and shattered it to splinters, tearing up the shingles as it descended, grazed the plate and then run down the door post against which Mrs. O. was leaning, when it struck her; it then took a horizontal direction with the grounds and entered a pile of wood, after killing a cow in its passage along the grounds. Mrs. O. had on her spectacles which were partially melted; her cap and gown was set on fire, and a small contusion made on her breast.-

Contact me for more info on the Orser family. I have British Headquarter papers (1783) and also a info on the British transport, Camel, that left NY in 1783 including passinger lists with the Orser's listed on them.
Hi,
As far as I know no one is working on the Orser family back to Holland. The Dutch custom of naming (patronymic, see Orser book page 11 and 18) is so confusing and irregular that I believe no one would be able to trace this line to anywhere in Holland.

Yes, Isaac and Arthur are brothers. Other siblings include John (who was the only child to stay in NY), Gilbert, Solomon, Gabriel, Rachel (who married John Warner) Phebe (who married Jeremiah Worden) There possibly was another sibling, Rhoda, but no one has ever found any info on her. There was also another sibling, Martha (just found in the last few years) who died in the British Transport to Canada in 1783. Their father, Joseph Orser also died enroute to Canada in 1783. Joseph bp 1723 Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, NY married Anntje Jurcks there in 1746. There is more info on this family on Genforum.

Well, I have a slight guess that we are from the same family, just we would be distant cousins. So, I am also looking for Jane Orser. I just didn't have her father or mother's names, so I thank you for that. Now, I'm really not sure how much we would be able to share, seeing as how I also have a lot of information on the Waite side of the family. But feel free to email me at reichertwilliam@yahoo.com And I'm not sure how often you get on, but maybe we'll be able to talk sometime.

Thank you
William

Hi-I have the Daniel Turner book if I could glean any information for you. I am in Wyoming and on this site to try to learn if anyone is taking the family grandparents into Holland. I want to do this but do not want to duplicate what others may have done or be doing. What is the Orser organization? I am in Wyoming and a descendant of Henry David Orser and Martha Allen. I am on a friends Ancestry so must receive any messages by e-mail: lizalou2955@me.com. thanks Pat Robbins

Hi-I am an Orser descendent in Wyoming. I have Daniel Turner's book but would like to have information not included there. I am working on another person's program so do not have regular access to Ancestry, but can be reached at lizalou2955@me.com. I wanted to take the Orser geneology into Holland, but did not want to go to the expense and time if someone else has done research on that. Or I would like to work with them if they are doing that. Pat Robbins

Still looking for the family of Clara Orser, born Aug 1857-9, depending on which census-Canadian or US federal. She was born in Ontario. Debbie says she has her death certificate listing her parents but she has not been inclined to share the state (MI I think)and date of death which I believe is between a 1910 census and the 1920 one in which she is among the missing. MI is not overly fast in doing searches. Any ties that you know of to this woman?

I can prove decent from Johanna Orser (born 1838, died 1927), she was my great-great grandmother. Her parents (as documented on the marriage registry) are Joseph and Elizabeth Orser. She married William James Belford, which is where the Belford comes from.

I found a secondary reference on Loyalist families in Ontario that shows Joseph Orser (son of Gilbert, brother of Enoch, Grandson of Joseph Orser) married Elizabeth Macdonald and had a daughter named Johanna born in the same year as my great-great grandmother. It is possible they are not the same Johanna Orser, or that the secondary reference was mistaken, which would explain my dead end.

Do you know which Joseph and Elizabeth Orser my GGM was related to if not these? Do you know where I might find proof either way?

Thank you,
Hulbert
I'm the Debby Worden Jean Ann was speaking about. I would me most interested in how you have come to the conclusion that you come from this Joseph Orser. He was born Aug 24, 1806 (& he is not a twin of Enoch as he was born 1802).

I have 2 connections to ORSER surname. If you have BELFORD then you are trying to connect to the wrong son of Gilbert Orser & Sarah Wright. Let me know here or go to genforum.genealogy.com/orser which is more complete & I work mostly there.

Hi,
Gilbert is perhaps the best know child of Joseph and Antje (Jurckse) Orser. Gilbert was born in Westchester County, NY about 1760-1765. Some of his sibling were baptized in the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow. Joseph was baptized there in 1723 and he and Antje were married there in 1746. Most sons of Joseph were loyalists and all of the family (except John) left NY in July 1783 on the British transport, Camel. Joseph died enroute. There are passenger lists which are in the book, Voyage of a Different Kind The Associated Loyalists of Kingston and Adolphustown by Larry Turner. The lists have Orser spelled "Auser". I have much info on early Orsers as does another cousin, Debby Worden. Please let us know what you need. Also, could you tell us a little about your Joseph Orser (1803-1842)? I know he is buried in Orser Cemetery in Hallowell, Prince Edward County. I do not know who he married or the names of his children. Debby probably does as she is the Canadian expert. Was he a twin to Enoch?

Darcy Horace Orser (b. 24 May 1894, East Mills Twp., Parry Sound Dist., Ont. / d. ?)
iii. Clarence Albert Orser (b. 24 Aug 1896, East Mills Twp., Parry Sound Dist., Ont. / d. ?)
iv. Pte. Frank Herbert Orser, CEF (b. 26 Dec 1898, East Mills Twp., Parry Sound Dist., Ont. / d. ?) -- farmer; fought in WW1 with 1st Div., Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force (CEF)
v. John "Jack" Maxwell Orser (b. 18 Apr 1900, East Mills Twp., Parry Sound Dist., Ont. / d. ?)
vi. Muriel Mary Orser (b.
MARY ORSER, prince edward county, ontario

I have hit a brick wall. I had a little breakthrough but need more help. I am trying to find the parents of Mary ORSER. I just found her last name after many years of searching. Here is her information: Mary Orser (her name is from her son's death registration) was born about 1823 (according to her death notice). She married David MCVEEN, son of John McVeen and Eleanor PATTERSON of Amherst Island, Ontario about 1852. David McVeen shows up on the 1851 Hallowell Township, Ontario census alone then David and Mary show up on the 1861 Hallowell Census with children.

David and Mary had 6 children:
Cecilia Alberta McVeen b.1853 (my GGM), Mary Alveretta McVeen b. 1857, David Hartwell McVeen b. 1858, Henry McVeen b. 1863, Alice Maud McVeen b. 1868, and possibly Arthur Mcveen (not sure of last child's name).

When Mary Orser died in 1868 her children were divided with Cecilia Alberta staying with David and Elizabeth Orser as per the 1871 Town of Brighton, Ontario Census. Son David Hartwell McVeen stayed with William and Lydia Orser. The whereabouts of the other children is unknown at this time. In 1871 David McVeen remarried Sarah Elizabeth SPAFFORD, daughter of Herman Spafford and Cecelia ABRAHAM. David's son Henry McVeen stayed with David and Sarah as shown on the 1881 census for Marysborough North.
The fact that Mary Orser's children stayed with members of Gilbert ORSER and Sarah WRIGHT's family makes me think that perhaps Mary is connected to this family somehow. Does anyone have information on the marriage of Mary Orser and David McVeen or have any theories who this Mary Orser could be?

Debbie

Re: Solomon Orser - a remarkable cure

Dear Jean,
We have a family story of a "miracle cure" in our family by a Vet. We have a picture of him sitting in a carriage. He is unidentified as to name. However, by cooincidence, we have a Christiana Orser who married Luther Emes Brantford, Ontario by the Rev. Wm. Hulbert 7 Feb 1855 record. We have been looking for her parents for a long while. Another surname Orser expert shows Solomon Orser as her parent with a death record for 6 April 1864 for Christiana. Her data differs from some of what we have in that the family story in that Christiana Orser Emes died in childbirth having Sarah Jane Emes (our ancestor) in 1855, born 3 Oct 1857 in our family history. Is is possible Christiana did die in childbirth having another child. There are a few more differences as well. Either way, was Solomon a vet? And could vet stand for an animal doctor or a veteran of the Rev War? or other war? If interested in the picture, or think we have a match; let me know and I can email it to you to see. I also have pictures of Christiana Orser (married name Emes) and her husband Luther Emes from a tintype. I also have pictures of Sarah Jane Emes and her husband Edmund Martindale and their children. I have a few of the siblings of Luther Emes and a Cora Emes who married a Brillinger. If Solomon IS Christiana's father, then I will need more information on them.

Moses Orser ... Brighton, New Brunswick

Moses Orser and Samuel H. Shaw were witnesses at the wedding of John E. Stephenson and Amelia J. Ross in Brighton in 1853. I am trying to find out if they were related or just friends.

Hi Lynn,
Was your Harvey married to Eileen Hardy and Josephine Morris? Other children in this family were Augusta, Weston, John, Nettie, Clara, Trecia, Frances, Ralph Lorne, Lewis, Alonzo Lynn, and Elwood Oakley. They were the children of Oakley Orser and Sophie Hanson. I have more if this is your family.
Jean Ann
p.s. This is not my line.

Joseph Bishop and Ann Orser who was also called "Phoebe Ann") are mentioned in the Orser book by Daniel Turner. Has their marriage record (Nov. 12, 1818) and says "Ann" died in child-birth. Names several of their children including Samuel, William, John, Elijah, Peggy, Georgiana, and Mary. There is more on Georgiana. What are you looking for?
Jean Ann

Pat,
I don't think so but you had a good thought! Rhoda is not a common name and the ages match. This is why I think not.

First, some genealogists show a Rhoda Orser (I have never found a Rhoda but did find a Martha that the genealogist did not know about) as a sibling to the Orser's who went to Canada in 1783 (daughter of Joseph and Anntje Orser) I have records of the passenger list (to Canada in 1783) and well as testimony in Canada from all the children stating name, age, etc, and where they were living "John the eldest is the only one who staid behind" (in the states) but no mention of a Rhoda.
Also, I have a court case in which all the sibling or children or grandchildren (living) state their connection to the Orsers. This is a court case to get money for the old homestead (in NY) when the eldest son died in 1837. Since there is no mention on any of the documents of a Rhoda or a Heustis I think "your" Rhoda is not and Orser (and I'm not even sure there ever was a Rhoda Orser (daughter of Joseph and Anntje Orser)!!!!

Yes it is! He was a brother to "my" John (who "staid" behind in NY when the entire family went to Canada in 1783).
