I found this message board by accident! My family is having a reunion and I thought it would be fun if I could gather information on our background. When I save your message the names rung a bell! I believe if I am not mistaken the Erik Hannah are my Great-Grandparents??? If the following names are some of their children then we have a match! Edwin, Andrew, Nels, Anord, Mrytle, Florence... I know they came from Sweden, my granfather told me stories of his boat ride over and how he lost his hat in the water. I hope we have a match, if you have any background info I am interested! I have been searching the web for the last three hours. I did find some Oquist's out there but I am not sure if I have the right stuff?? Do you know who Erik's father was or his grandfather? I would be interested to know. How are you related? Please E-Mail me and let me know if we are talking about the same people.

DHall.

My maternal grandfather's brother emigrated to US from Salmis, Sweden in the year 1900.
His name was Karl Oqvist. What is known is that he initially resided in Michigan, but later moved to the west coast, married a Finnish woman and was probably a boatbuilder by profession.
The family Oqvist came originally from the Piteaa area, where they in the early 18 hundreds owned the very big Pitgaarden farm with lots of forests attached, My great great grandfather apparently sold the farm and land to some "timberbaronets", at a time when large scale sawmilling was just born, around the middle of the century, for Swedish Kronors 4000.I have been told that the value of the timber felled on this land the first year after the sale corresponded to several times the selling price of the property. I don't know exactly when my great grandfather ended up in Salmis ( on the northernmost coast of the Baltic(in Sweden)
My grandfather, Arvid Oqvist had three brothers, August, Anders and Karl ( there might have been a 4th ,Johan )and about 8 half-brothers and -sisters.
I have in my posession the last letter Karl wrote to his parents fro Michigan and also document he signed when borrowing Swedish Kronors 300 from his brothers to pay for the fare to N.America.
I would be very happy if I could find out more about Karl Oqvist, and I would also be happy to share all information I have about the Oqvist family ( Oqvist is a fairly rare family name in Sweden, but not so very rare. There are Oquists ( spelling with a u instead of a v ) that are not related, except my aunt who was born Alma Oqvist and after marriage became Alma Oquist, nee Oqvist.
Hoping to hear from some Oqvists in the US.
Myself I emigrated from Sweden to thw US in 1967 and later to canada and I Live in vancouver B.C.

I am an Oquist who was born in the US along with my two brothers, Paul and Harry. My Father, Paul Oqvist was born in the Pitea area snd worked on a farm with his Grandfather until he was around 20 years old then he came to the US. I am interested in meeting some more of my relatives in Sweden and in the US. My brother, Paul, visited Sweden several years ago and went to Pitea and met many of our relatives. He had a wonderful time. You can write me at russo@gspc.org

My late Mother-in-Law Lillian Alexandria Oquist Anderson I think had a brother or ? named Arvid. She was from Pitea came over with her Sister in about 1930. Married my late husband's father and had 3 boys and 1 girl in Spokane, Washington. She died in about 1967. Her sister was Anna. Her Mother was Anna and Father Franz Oquist. I know she still had more brothers and possibly sister over there. Lillian and Anna were sent over here because of the political problem there. They staye at first with a relative in Sandpoint, Idaho. Lillian went to work for Rons Grandfather and that is how they met. She always wanted to go home to Sweden.
