Hi ! My name is Maria DeLos Angeles Cruz Oquendo born to Francisco Luis Cruz Santiago and (Maria) Dolores "Lolita" Oquendo Batista and I'm interested in finding more information concerning my mom's side of the family.
My mother was born to Demetrio Oquendo Montalvo and Alejandrina Batista Ortiz. They had eight children; Ismael, Ana Maria, Josefina, Dolores (my mom), Nerida, Candida, Giberto and Lydia. I know as a fact that my grandfather had other brothers and sisters, but I don't know all their names, I can only recall Galo (settled in Bayamon, PR) and Guillo (La Pica, Jayuya, PR), all born in Utuado, Puerto Rico. My mom's memory is not very good, so she cannot remember well, but tends to think her grandfather's name was Odocio Oquendo? Anyone have any clues as to how to go about getting more info on our family? Thanks!!! Regards, Mari

Hi my name is Mike DeGori my father is a Oquendo but him and my mother didn't stay together which makes me want to find out more about his side of the family. Most of my life i was told i was only Italian but i can see where i look a little Spanish. I've looked our name up and found that we can from Spain? Is this true? Even though a lot of our family stays in PR i believe we come from Spain i mean my hair and features are those of some one from Spain or Italy. Which are really close if you think about it. Someone please help me find out where my dads side is from.

You are correct many Oquendo's did come from Spain and landed in Puerto Rico and Cuba. I unfortunately don't know much more, my mom whom knew a lot has been forgeting a lot for the past 10 years and what little she passed on relates to the close family, however I would share what I do know in hopes that it will help. My grandfather lived in the middle of the island his name was Demetrio Oquendo and he had a large family, and though some stayed in Jayuya like him, others migrated throughout Puerto Rico (Bayamon) and even further to New York.

Hi Mike, the Oquendo last name comes from Alava, Spain in the Basque Province (it's near the French border). There's actually a town called Okondo. I'm originally from Cuba so I guess the admiral got around the west indies and parts unknown since there are a lot of us in PR, Cuba, Jamaica, and from these posts apparently in the Philippines as well! Unfortunately I can only go back to the late 1700's with my family tree. So I'm trying to work from the origin (Okondo) forward now to see if I can make it back to Cuba.
