My wife's mother was Oppelt, descended from Charles Henry Oppelt, the father of William Henry Oppelt. We met with Frank Duchane a number of times at his house in Crosby. We did a thorough history of the Oppelt family going back to Germany and England(Edmonds line). You can contact me at rthom31@aol.com for any info that you may want.
Ron Thompson

Hello! I've been working on my Oppelt line on and off for a few years now. Charles Henry Oppelt was my ggg grandfather:

Charles and Rachel had a son William Henry Oppelt (1845-1920) who married Sarah Emiline King (1849-1919)

William and Sarah had a son Marion Clifford Oppelt (1883-1943) who married Alma Marie Duchane (1886-1966)

Marion and Alma had a son Frank Duchane Oppelt (1927-living) who married Edith Eileen Miller-Smith (1927-1997)

They had my father Douglas Frank Oppelt (1954-living)

I have a some information from William down, but not much about his siblings except for their names. I'd be happy to trade some info if anyone can help me out with their 'branches' of this tree.

Also, the website familysearch.org helped me out immensely if anyone is looking for free sources - they have many of the censuses transcribed. It's provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and LOTS of volunteers.

Hi Oppelts, My grandmother was Gladys Wanda Oppelt, daughter of Charles Hiram Oppelt and Emily Georgine Randall, grand daughter of Albert Oppelt and Lavinia Daniels, grt grand daughter of Charles Henry Oppelt and Rachel Sybilla Belling. I am looking for any positive information on Rachels heritage. My grandmother had written in her tree that Rachels father was a hungarian refugee by the name of Conrad Belling, who was smuggled out of Germany by the Moravian Church. He was supposedly under an assumed name being that he was from a royal family and they were being slaughtered. That I have no proof of and possibly it was just persecution of religion and not a royal family. However the rumor still persists in my side of the family. I have no definate proof of Rachels mother either..can anyone of you help me.. would love to have any info on the background of my Oppelts . I can go back as far as Johann Sebastian Oppelt and Dorthea Kneschkin. Thanks so much for all of your posts..sure helped knowing there is such a large group out there. I was born in Seattle, Wa. and lived in Renton, Wa. for a time. Now down south in Ms...Thanks for any info..Sandra

Hi, I am currently entering details of Lezayre graveyard from the Burial Register into a database and found the record for your grandfather Anton Oppelt.

He was buried on 21st May 1941 in the graveyard, which is just outside of Ramsey and although there is no marker or headstone on the grave it is easily locatable if any of your family ever visit the Isle of Man.

Annette Thackray

All I can tell you is that I know that a cousin of yours, Roger, tried very hard to find out more about our enigmatic grandfather - without any success at all, I'm afraid. So, good luck.

Klaus,

My Oppelt came from Germany in 1888. I have no idea who he is or where he came from. He came here on the ship SS LAHN and it says his origin of journey is Schweinfurt. I have some guesses who he might be, but no proof. I would love to get some help in locating my ancestors in Germany, but I fear they may be in Poland now after Germany was split up after the Wars. Family stories indicate they were from Rahdan Westfalen.
Alvina

This is my family line. My grandmother is 88 and she is a Neuman - her grandmother was a Wilhelm and greatgrandmother was Wieland - we are connected to Oppelts by marriage. Our Wilhelms/Wieland immigrated on the ship the Helvetia in 1883. Would love to share any information - I believe the (Marie) Mary Oppelt that was in Redwood city, was the daughter of Phillip Wilhelmi (changed to Williams in the 1920's). My grandmother knew her - she died in 1975 as did her daughter Margueite Oppelt Young died in 1975. Would also love to know how the Neumann's and Wilhelms are related in Germany - this has been one the harder lines to search - thanks for posting! Wendy Statom

My dad is doing fine. He and mom still farm and runs some cattle. Aunt Laura lives very close but she suffered a stroke about 9 months ago. However, she's getting around fairly well. Aunt Virginia lives in Austin and she's doing well. Uncle James passed away about 2 years ago. Uncle Bill (William Joseph, Jr.) passed away about 15-20 years ago. Aunt Caroline passed away about 8 years ago. I have one brother and he's an architect, living in Kerrville, Texas. I'm in sales and Marketing in Georgetown, Texas. I would very much like to have a copy of Henry and Eugenia's wedding certificate. This is really such a coincedence that we are related and we met on this website. Modern technology, isn't it great.

O.K. I probably met you when you were a kid. You are one of Uncle Al's kids. Who has lived at the family farm for 100 years. I have always wanted to see it, but never had the chance to take a tour of that area. The last time I was in San Antonio was in April of 2000. My husband & I visited with Aunt Theresa (the year before she died), and Uncle Al and Helen, and also saw Aunt Rosie and Norm Jr.
Years ago I wrote to the County Clerk (Bexar) and requested a copy of Henry & Othalia's wedding certificate. They sent me the original which was still in the file. In addition, they also sent me the original wedding certificate of Henry and Eugenie. That just blew me away.
E-mail me when you get a chance. How is you Dad doing?
Nyada Cline

Nyada,

Thank you for the reply. My father is Albert Louis Oppelt (wife-Elizabeth Dugosh). He is the youngest of eight. My grandfather is William Joseph Oppelt (wife-Maude Caroline Newman Oppelt), brother to Henry Otto Oppelt (wife-Othelia Reuss). My Great Grandfather is Henry Oppelt (wife-Eugenia Sittre). Through the courthouse records of Medina County, Texas, Henry died when the boys were minors. Henry Oppelt left the farm (460 acres) to both of the boys, Henry Otto and William Joseph, upon their turning of age (I assume age 18). My parents still live on a portion of the Henry Oppelt farm. The farm is located eight miles south of Castroville and has now been in the same family for over 100 years (since 1898).
I'm trying to figure out if this branch of the Oppelt's came over with the Henry Castro colony. I'm trying to come up with ship manifests (27 ships total) but, no luck as of yet. The ships set sail from 1843-1847 and they should have docked in Galveston, Texas. However, the Texas Seaport Muesum doen't list an Oppelt on thier on line database.

My father, Charles Junius Oppelt told me when I was a child studying geography (5th grade), that the name Oppelt came from the Providence of Opoli in Germany, which is now a part of Poland. So I believe the last sentence in your statement of where the name came from. He also said that it at one time had been von opple ton. I believe this is how most name were brought about centuries ago from the names of villages and towns where the people lived.

Old hand written letters

I have copies of letters written by Nettie Oppelt to her relatives back in Germany after she arrived in Benton County, Iowa. These are photo copies and hand written in German. I have not been able to find anyone to translate these for me. Any suggestions?

Oppelt if Hartford

How interesting. I do not know of a Thomas Paul Oppelt. He doesn't come from our Oppelt line. My Oppelt line has been in the Hartford area for over 104 years. I have the entire 200+ descendants of my Welhelm Heinrich Oppel(t) who married Sarah Ellen Wagstaff in Hartford in 1897. He may have had a sibbling come to this country with him, but if he did, there must have been bad blood between them as there is no record anywhere of a brother or nephews or cousins. In the Grace Episcopal Church records, there are other Oppelts listed, but they didn't even have the same wittnesses to baptisms or marriages or anything. It is as if there was two unrelated Oppelt Families in Hartford starting at about the same time and existing to this day. If they were brothers, I would like to know. We may have lots of cousins we never knew existed.
Rick Oppelt
