Aunt Babe was the sister to Dennis' grandmother: Cecelia Doherty Laidlaw. She was Jean's Mother. I am Jean's niece and 2nd brothers'( Carl) daughter, Laurie

There are several branches of Laidlaw's researching our genealogy and we would enjoy working with you to help gather facts. Please join my Facebook page: Laurie Laidlaw and you will find a large smattering of us there. As for the Opedisano's-Jean is the "gate keeper" and has become somewhat of a recluse. You can contact her at:207-799-1009

In any case, I would be very happy to work with you on this. Does your family come from Gioiosa Ionica, Martone, or Grotteria in Reggio Calabria?

Best wishes,
Louis Loccisano

I think of Lucky from time to time and was suprised to see your families name posted.
I also found a long lost relative on this site. It's amazing. Merry Christmas to you and your father. He was a nice guy also.
Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Cassandra
Hi, I was just searching the Oppedisanos and saw this message. I dated Vincent N. Oppedisano ll for 5 years back around 1986. His father was the Senior and he was married to Virginia (Ginny) with another son Kirk. They live in Cundy's Harbor, Maine. The brother was Joesph, but he changed his last name to, I believe, Peterson? He was a sail maker-the last I knew of. I hope this helps. They are a wonderful family.

OPPEDISANO family

The Oppedisano family has its origins in the cluster of villages surrounding the town of Locri in the province of Reggio Calabria. It is possible to trace your ancestors back to about 1750, as I have done. It turns out the Mormon Church has microfilmed all birth, marriage, and death records from our villages (Grotteria, Gioiosa, Siderno, ect) from 1809-1910 and these microfilms are available here in the USA. Two of my distant great-grandparents were Oppedisano's. I'm sure we're all related! Hopefully in time, we can link our families up. I would very much like to correspond with all of you and share family stories. One day, my goal is to compile a very complete family tree. Please feel free to e-mail me at loulocc@pacbell.net. Best wishes to you all.

Hi,
I'm not italian, but I just bought the family shoe store in Honeoye Falls NY known as Oppedisano's. From what the previous owner, Don Oppedisano tells me the name literally means healthy foot and many of his ancestors worked in the footwear trade be it cobbling or what have you. Hope this helps the Oppedisano people.

So Ptld. He was married to a Jean of Irish descent until his passing, and was stationed in Cape May, NJ early in his life. His middle initial is A. Born 14 JUL 1918, Died 12 FEB 2001. Savanna, Dennis's daughter has tried to find out more on the genealogy, yet Dennis' has either been vague on purpose or just doesn't know. He has said only that his kin are all in NYC. I remember hearing that Joseph came from a large family. He did not like pasta, except on thanksgiving, because he grew up eating it pretty much daily. Dennis isn't sure if Joseph was born in Italy or in NYC or "somewhere along the way". Also, Dennis has spoken quite often of an Aunt "Babe", who, he claims was a pretty well known Broadway actress. This aunt being Joseph' sister, I believe.
Dennis is an extremely talented guitar player, and Savanna was born with an amazing voice, so Savanna, would love to learn more of this elusive aunt. Both Dennis and his father Joseph work/worked in the pipefitter/welder's union if that helps. Savanna would love to meet or correspond with her extended family on her dad's side. That part of her life is a big mystery, as it is for you. I sincerely hope that you or someone reading this turns out to be kin. I hope you also, Derek, if this is not the same Joseph, find your roots somehow.

Hi, this is Savanna's mother, Cheryl. Dennis did tell me he thought he had at least one sibling. Dennis also has told me that he has had a son, (in San Diego), he told Savanna he had twin girls, and a state worker suggested that he "may have" many children. So not only is Savanna, she's 13, a cousin of yours, but there are possibly more. Savanna is in Oreno, for a school event until tues night, yet I know she'll be excited to hear that you replied. These illegitimate children by Dennis is reflective of living with the man, who I got to know pretty well, Joseph Oppedisano. She had been discouraged in meeting him by Dennis...and most likely Joseph was never told about her attempts in meeting him.

Gina, Where do you live in MA? I live in Rowley, MA, north of Boston. My grandfather, Bruno Iannizzi, settled in the North End in 1907 from Grotteria, Reggio Calabria. I have seen the OPPEDISANO name quite frequently when using the LDS films to research. Several actuall married Iannizzi individuals. I have compiled a database of all the IANNIZZI individuals in Grotteria and Mammola by using the filds from 1809-1910 through the LDS library. Would love to correspond with another Grotteria descendant. I am president of The Italian Genealogical Society of A,merica, based in Peabody, MA. We are an active group and meet 4 times per year. Love to hear from you.

I came acroiss this message thread when I searched for Grotteria on Google. My grandfather came from Grotteria, arriving in NY in 1907. He then settled in the North End in Boston, MA. I have spent the last 10 years tracing the family in Grotteria and Mammola, visiting the villages in Nov 1999. My surnames are IANNIZZI, ZAVAGLIA, SCALI, FEMIA, AGOSTINO, TASSONE, FERRARO and a few more. I have come across the OPPEDISANO name as marrying into the IANNIZZI clan in Grotteria. aI have used nearly 170 rolls of microfilm to trace my family back to the 1750s in the two towns. My maiden name was actually spelled YANNIZZE in the US (these Yankees never could spell ;~))Thought I'd drop you a line to say hi to a fellow Calabrese! Marcia

Richard,
Very interesting story! Although, I don't think it was my grandfather, as he had already relocated to Syracuse by 1966. However, it most definitely could have been grandfather's uncle - also a Sam. I should be talking to my grandfather today, and will certainly ask him. If I recall, I actually think Sam's oldest son's name was Frank. However, they may have all relocated to Massapequa by '66. I'll check on it. Small world it is!

Gina - My name is Richard Oppedisano and I am Dina's father. I have an interesting story for you and it MAY involve your grandfather. In 1966 I was in the navy stationed in Brookkyn. I had to go to the Bush Terminal on 3rd avenue for a ticket to go to Philly. When the clerk called my name the man working on the lights responded with " Yes Mary what do you need?" She responded " Oh stop it Sam I was calling that young man over there". When I went up to the desk, Sam Oppedisano introduced himself to me and he knew my father, Joe the Butcher, from Albany. He invited me out to his house in Queens but I couldn't take him up on it at that time and never followed up on it. I wonder if it was your grandfather? If you have and uncle Frank from Queens who does or used to work for the federal government, I have a funny story about him also. Yes it is a small world.

Dick Oppedisano
