Opalenik

My maternal grandfather was Andrew Opalenik however over years have come accross several variations in spelling (Apolenik - Opalenyk). Married to Mary Smulska and divorced 1913 in Chicago, supposedly never to be heard from again. They had 2 children, Ann (my mother) Helen. Thought I would pass on what little is known of Andrew because of similarity in surname.

Virginia - Wish I had the capability to help on your search as am having similar results with my surname. I was born 20 yrs after Andrew's divorce have absolutely no recollection of him. Divorce was something no one talked about in those days. My Mom had no idea she was an Opalenik until she was sent to obtain a Birth Certificate, necessary for a work permit at her age. Sorry, but it was just a shot in the dark with possibility that your uncle found himself in Chicago. Please keep me in mind should you come up with anything. Good luck!

Do you have any other info on your grandfather? Like where he may have come from, birth date, brothers or sisters, etc? I have discovered that my husbands grandfather was Opalenik and that there are others in Slovakia with the same last name. I have also found others in the US who are also related to Opaleniks but they are having trouble getting info from Europe. Any other info might help. Thanks.

Opalenik - Polenick??

I am researching my husbands genealogy and we discovered on his grandfathers naturalization papers that his spelled his name Mihaly Opalink and Michael Opalenik. I don't know how he became Polenick so I am wondering if anyone knows if we are related. Michael came from Mocar Czech. in 1906 on the USS Cassel. He settled first in Roberstdale PA, then moved to New Castle PA. He was born Nov. 11, 1887. He lists his parents as Louis Polenick and Julia Vargo. There was a brother that settled in Canada but no one seems to know anything about him. If there is a connection please get in touch with me. Thank you.
