I just recently read your response to an Oonk Family inquiry. Included in that response was the Hemink Family name, particularly with reference to Clymer, NY. By chance do you have any more Hemink Family geneology from the Netherlands or Clymer, NY? Thank you. Janet

In Clymer we have Berend Willem Hemink, born 13 May 1837 Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands, son of Jan Albert Hemink and Janna Berendina Hesselink. He married first with Janna Rauwerdink who was born about 1831Winterswijk, daughter of Jan Albert Rauwerdink & Hinners Woordes. Berend Willem married second on 7 Sep 1866 Winterswijk with Engelina Rauwerdink, born there 5 November 1843, daughter of Hendrik Jan Rauwerdink & Janna Willemina Lemmenes. He married third, in Clymer, with Anna TeWinkle, born 1847, daughter of Gerrit Willem te Winkel & Dora T. Larrberg. Around 1870 Berend Willem & Engelina & his four children came to America.

The children of Berend Willem & Janna were Johannes Albertus, b.16 November 1862, & Engel Janna Geertruid, b.29 August 1865. The children of Berend Willem and Engelina were Janna Willemina, b.13 July 1867, & Anna Geertruid, b.7 March 1869. Berend Willem and Anna Geertruida are found in records for Clymer, NY. I have not found any records here for Engelina and the other three children.

Berend Willem was the father of another nine children, all born in Clymer: Sarah, b. about 1871 may have been Engelina's daughter or she may have been the daughter of Anna. The other eight are, I believe, children of Berend Willem and Anna. They are Willem, b. abt. 1873; Albert, b.1875; Cora, b.abt.1878; John, b.abt. 1881; May/Mame, b.abt.1883; Lou, b.21 November 1885; William, b.1889; & Lawrence, b.abt.1892.

Berend Willem Hemink died 6 May 1924 Clymer and is buried in Clymer Center Cemetery, Clymer.

A sister of Berend Willem, Aaltjen/Alice, was born 10 November 1828. She married in Chautauqua County, NY, with Harmen Jan Nekkers/Neckers, born 13 September 1823 Winterswijk, son of Pieter Hendrik Nekkers & Berendina ter Borg. Aaltjen & Harmen Jan were the parents of nine children.

I was very happy to see your report on the Hemink family. You see I am the great great grand daughter of Berend (b.1837-1824) & Annie (1846-1938) Hemink. Their son William (b.1889-1952) who married Clara (Darling) Hemink (b.1892-1969) was my great grandparents. Their son Donald (b.1912-1983) was my grandfather and his daughter Suzanne (b.1944-) is my mother. For years I always wondered where Berend was from all I knew of him was B.W. Hemink and that he came here from the Netherlands. Thank you so much now I have a name for B.W. and a place he was from. We were always led to believe that his wife Engelina died on the way here to America so Sarah b.1871 could very well belong to Engelina. Now could you please tell me where you found the records for Clymer N.Y. with them in it? I hope that I helped to fill in some info. Thank you again Lisa

Thank you for the additional information; I'll add it to my records.
Heminks are found in Clymer Center Cemetery. Chautauqua County Genealogical Society has published a book, Cemeteries and Burial Sites in the Town of Clymer, Chautauqua County, New York, which is also very helpful as it has additional genealogical info in it. In the 1880 census for Clymer, B.W. Hemink was listed as William B. Hammink. (It was quite usual for the person to be called by his middle name.) With him were wife Annie, son Albert, & daughter Cornelia. Daughter Minnie (Janna Willemina), at the age of 13, was employed as a domestic servant by a Heslink family in Clymer. In the 1892 census he is B.W. The rest of his children with Anna are also listed with him & Anna.
Heminks are also found in Clymer marriage and death records.
I did not find Heminks in the Clymer Hill Reformed or Abbe Reformed Church. They may have attended either the Methodist or U.B. Church in North Clymer, closer to home, but I have not searched those records.
Hope this helps a little.

Hello Thelma,

I have just begun my "search" and I am a descendent of the Clymer, New York Heminks. Clara Hemink was my great-grandmother and Donald, one of her sons was my grandfather. I am just putting some of the pieces together and would ilke to visit with anyone who is connected. I hope to hear from you. Thank you, Kathleen (Hemink) Summy

Hi Kathleen,

I do not have any connections to this Hemink family, You probably would enjoy talking with Luella Stebbins,a Hemink descendant who has done a lot of work with her family history. She can be reached at 716-355-2264. Good luck.
