I am trying to obtain information about John H. Ooms from Illinois/Indiana area. His first wife was Katie Porter (born 1896 died in a fire 1929) He later married Hedwig (Hattie) M. (don't know her last name but she was of German descent.) John had 1 child to survive the fire her name was Sarah Ooms who later married Edwin Gilbert DeVries. Edwin's father was Henry DeVries married to Gertrude Broertjes. Henry was born in 1879 and died 1957. Gertie was born 1880 and died 1947. Henry had two brothers listed Walter and Gilbert DeVries. Henry's children listed were Ted, John, Edwin, Tina, and Dina DeVries Kaiser. We also know Henry was born in Riverdale.

Hello there, I just saw your message, and thought maybe this might help. My great grndmothers maiden name was Dorothea Ooms, and she was born in Tilburg Holland. She maried John Kools in 1885, had 10 kids and moved to the USA in the early 1900's. She lived her life here, in Appleton Wi. and dies in 1944. The man you are talking about might be a brother or other reation. I hope this helped in some way, and email me if any more info is needed.

Would a Bert Ooms be related to your search? Wife was Angeline. He thought to have passed away in 1947.

We don't know if Bert Ooms is related or not. The only Ooms we know for sure are John Ooms and Sarah.

I read your message with interest. John Ooms was my grandfather's brother. My mother is also a Sarah Ooms, The Sarah that you speak of is my Mom's first cousin. The family and my mom's family all grew up in Lansing, Ill. I would be eager to hear from you. We grew up hearing the tragic story of the loss of Uncle John's wife and children in the fire. I can still picture the small uphill street on which they lived and up which the fire trucks could not get up in time, all those years ago.

I just read your e-mail and was very excited. My husband's grandmother was the Sarah Ooms that survived the fire. She married Edward (Edwin) DeVries. Which one was your grandfather? It would be great to be able to talk more and get any information you may have. In December, we went to the cemetery where everyone was buried, and tried to figure out how everyone was related.

I just read your e-mail. I was very excited. My husband's grandmother was the Sarah Ooms that survived the fire. Which one was your grandfather? We just received
a copy of a written journal by Mrs. Cornelius (Sadie) Ooms recounting the fire. We would love to be able to get as much information as you know about the family.

Isnt this a small world. I know your husband's grandmother. In our family (my mom's generation) there were 7 Sarahs. Each family had a Sarah and they were all known by their father's name, such as my mom was known as Sarah of Uncle Neal (my grandfather was Cornelius (neal) Ooms, a brother to John and your husbands grandmother was known as Sarah of Uncle John. I will have to tell my mom when I speak to her that you and I have been communicating. Did you go to the cemetery in Lansing to see the graves? I know just where you were. Where do you live now? Did your husband grow up in Illinois or Indiana? I grew up in Lansing, just south of the Lynwood airport. My husband served 20+ years in the air force, that is how we ended up in Las Vegas. Now since he has retired from the AF, we call this "home", but the midwest will always really be home. Plz write back. i really enjoy hearing from you. Sherelle

My husband's name is Roger. His mom and dad are Robert (Bob) Mary. He grew up in Indiana around Lowell, Hammond (the old farm place. We live in Russellville, AR. Roger moved South to get out of the cold winters.
We are trying to do a family tree. We received a letter from Roger's Aunt Shirley Quasebarth it was a written account of the fire written by your grandmother. Yes, we did go to the cemetery in Lansing. We had to brush the snow off the tombstones to be able to read them, but it was very interesting. My husband works in Little Rock about 75 miles East of where we live. Do you have any information on the DeVries side of the family. What about old photos?
Roger wants to know if he can reach you during the day. He can call you from work on his cell phone. He would really like to talk to you.
