My grandfather, John Robert O'Mailia, was from the Denver, CO area. He had 1 brother and 1 sister. His brother's name was William G. O'Mailia. Both him and his brother died in 1998. I am interested in finding out about my Irish heritage.

Read your posting, my family came from County Mayo in Ireland, emigrated to the USA (3 brothers), and establised families in the Wheeling W.VA. area. One of the brothers, Miles, became a Jesuit Priest. I have heard that some of the extended family may have moved to Colorado... but not sure if directly related. I am also trying to track down my heritage.

I'm not sure what I can provide about some of the missing links in your search, but here is what I know. My grandfather was Joseph O'Mailia and he had several brothers. One was named James, Miles ( a Jesuit Priest who taught at Georgetown and was dean of St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia), a sister who was a Nun. For the most part they came from West Virginia and then a clan that went to Colorado. I have access to more details that may help all of us. My aunt--is still living and will be able to help us all out, she is in her 80's. You can call me toll-free at 800-458-1066 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST). Would love to hear from you. Miles O'Mailia

Dear Miles,
I would love to hear more from your aunt. My grandfather, John, passed away in 1998. I don't know much about his family except that he had twin brothers and his mothers name was Corine. I am going to contact my grandma (his wife) for more information and will get back to you. What part of the country are you in?

Thanks for your reply. It would seem to me that your grandfather was probably in his 80's when he passed away. That would put himabout the same age as my father when he passed away about 9 years ago. Here is what I do know (or at least as far as I remember). The O'Mailia's came from County Mayo and settled in West Virginia. My grandfather Joseph died in 1981 and was 90 years old. He had three brothers, Thomas, James and Miles. James moved to Cleveland too but eventually moved away (where I don't know). Thomas, I'm not sure of. Miles was the scholar of the family, a Jesuit priest who was dean of St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, and taught at Georgetown. He travelled a lot and I by accident found him coming thru Ellis Island from the Cayman Islands in the early 1900's! My grandfather also had four sisters, Mary, Agnes, Ellie and Ethel. Agnes was a nun (Sr. Mary Inez) who ran the operating room at a hospital in Buffalo. My mother (a Murphy) thinks that Ethel moved to Denver. I remeber my grandfather going to Denver to see his brother or sister. Perhpas my aunt can fill in the blanks for us. I live in Toledo, Ohio about 60 miles south of Detroit and about 120 miles from Cleveland. I'm in my early 50's and most of my cousins are around the same age. We'd kind of like to find out more. Look forward to sharing family hsitory with you.--Best regards--Miles

Miles,
I am 30 years old but my father is 52. His name is John Edward O'Mailia and lives in Montana. He has 2 brothers and a sister all younger but around the same age. I have 2 younger siblings that he fathered; Sarah, 25 and Elijah 22. My grandpa died in his 60's because he smoked and had a degenerative spinal condition which compressed his lungs. I will find out more information from my grandma as well.
Nina
