Surnames: O'Mailia, McCarthy, Skiles, Staley
I am from the Sullivan/McCarthy clan and have just discovered that my Uncle John J. McCarthy was shown in the 1920 Maryland Census as living with a niece, Margaret Elizabeth O'Mailia, wife of James J. O'Mailia, in Sparrows Point, Md. They had a son James J. Jr, and a daughter, Mary A. O'Mailia. The daughter had been born in Connecticut. James O'Mailia Sr. had been born in West Virginia. Margaret Elizabeth was the daughter of John J. McCarthy's sister, Catherine.
Is any of this familiar to anyone on the O'Mailia borad?

Hi WIlliam, The James Jr., which you refer to in your posting, is my husband's father! My husband is James, Sr. now, subsequent to the passing of James, Jr. in 1984 and the birth of our son, the new James, Jr., in 1992. Mary Agnes O'Mailia Thompson [still] lives, in Louisiana. There was a second daughter of James (W.VA) - Catherine O'Mailia O'Dell, [still] of Buffalo, NY. My husband's father was born in Midland, PA. There's a lot to tell of all this. But my husband, Jim, tells of your uncle, the one-arm foreman of a factory or mine in W.VA who was notoriously referred to as "Black Jack". Sort of that proud dark side of the O'Mailias. This notoriety of your uncle is akin to another related O'Mailia with those same tough-as-nails Irishman traits - Jimmy O'Dell, Catherine's (and husband, Jimmy O'Dell, Sr.). Jimmy, Jr., also known as "Digger", was a Green Beret "tunnel rat" in Viet Nam. Jimmy lives in Buffalo, NY. I'm trying to figure out the geneology of Black Jack and Digger. (I envision a novel on these two characters). It's distant. More on this later. An interim note. No true O'Mailia would ever change his name for convenience or distinction! Enjoy the hunt. Does any of The O'Mailia clan know anything at all about the parents of James J. O'Mailia's wife, Margaret? I have information from the Diocese of Harrisburg that shows her mother (my great aunt Kate) was married to a "Judd Hewitt Skiles", but the records show a gradual change of name to John Staley. Is this Skiles a result of someone's inability to read another's writing? Has any of the family ever heard of a Skiles in the line? If any of you answer, use my new E-Mail address: gc6gs2gd4@aol.com

Diocese of Harrisburg, PA records show Margaret Elizabeth, born January 23, 1896, baptized March 1, 1896, parents Judd Hewitt Skiles and Catherine McCarthy, sponsors were my grandfather and grandmother James and Honora Sullivan.
Catherine McCarthy, my grandmother's sister, was always known as Aunt Kate Staley....how did Skiles get changed to Staley? This same Margaret Elizabeth is the girl who married James J. O'Mailia. Copy of the correspondence from Diocese of Harrisburg is available to you.

Hi again, WIlliam;
The best person I know of who has researched the O'Mailia Clan extensively is Patricia Flaherty. She has submitted replies to this message board in the past and is a cousin of my husband (Jim O'Mailia). Good luck with the hunt. Persistence, they say, is a virtue.

My new E-Mail address is gc6gs2gd4@aol.com. Would you be able to give me any information at all on the mother of Margaret O'Mailia? Her name was Catherine, she was the sister of "Black Jack" John McCarthy. I am trying to backtrack the McCarthy line and I'm getting nowhere. Catherine's father and mother were William McCarthy and Catherine Keane, but that's as far as I can go. I would appreciate any information at all, especially the Connecticut tie!

Hi William! We read your last posting and thought Patricia Flaherty would be the better O'Mailia family researcer to contact. She's listed on this site. Give her a try. She's well versed on the O'Mailia Clan. Jim O'Mailia (my husband) knows only what he remembers being told when he was a kid. Wish we could help more. Still keep up the contact here. There's a lot stored away in Jim's old memory bank (he's 48).

Happy hunting... Cheri O.

Hi William!
Hi Cherie!

Have been reading your messages - All new information for me! I have been concentrating on researching the O'Mailia's back to County Mayo so I may not be much help on any information on James O'Mailia first wife Margaret.

Cherie - Have you found out much on the O'Mailia's prior to 1900? I have not had much luck in directly tracing them to Ireland other than I know the first James O'Mailia (Jim's Great Grandfather) was from County Mayo and his wife Catherine was born in Durham England of Irish Parents
