I need to match up this family to their rightful family in Ireland. And get some church records or ships or something. And perhaps find some relatives. My aunt is going to Ireland in May 2002 (another trip from that generation still looking)
Michael C. O'Mahoney came to NY NY in about 1863 at around 18 ( I have his "2nd papers" for citizenship dated 10/9/1868) It states that while there he lived at one point at 214 East 22nd Street. His witness/friend was John P. Murray of 97 Mott St. (in the US his name is sometimes listed as O'Mahony or O'Mahoney or either with out the "O".
See a photo of him in his older years here:
http://www.pipestoneminnesota.com/museum/sample~1.htm click on it to make it bigger. He died about 1921 & Hanna before him. (I am still searching for obituary & military records, stuff from Chicago water works, the Pipestone Museum etc.. (they have a biography, etc. & a section to him there as my relatives have been there)
He came from Mallow (Diocese of Cloyne), co Cork, Munster, Ireland. In NY NY he married Hanna Mulville / Mulville / Mulvahill daughter of Mathew Mulville & Briget Griffia of Ballybunion, (Diocese of Kerry) co Kerry, Munster, Ireland. Michael & Hanna married 4/7/1863 NY NY. Michael C. O'Mahoney joined the Merchant Marines during the US Civil war & was a Engineer/Mechanic on the famous USS Monitor.
In 1867 they moved to Chicago, IL and he built the cities 1st Water Works. (relative who has seen it told me his name & info are on a plaque on a monument Big pump house thing) He had 5 children (I don't know birth dates but only for my ancestor.) Katherine "Kate" O'Mahoney when the Great Chicago fire happened & survived. But was ill from smoke & doctors told Michael & Hanna they had to get out of the city.. so around 1871 they moved to Rochester MN & were there in 1873 & then moved to the new open land to homestead in Woodstock, Pipestone, MN where Michael was the 1st white man to break ground.
In Sept 1883 4 of their children died within the same week. Briget, Mathew, Minnie, & William died during a horrible diptheria epidemic. My great great Grandma Katherine "Kate" survived only because she/they caught the growth & used a pin knife deep into her throat to cut it out.
This Katherine "Kate" O'Mahoney married Charles Edwin (Eden / Ed) Walling [son of Joseph E. & Elizabeth Casper Walling] in Woodstock, Pipestone, MN 10/28/1890. They lived in IL & NE then homesteaded in the Dakota territory (South Dakota) & she later moved back to Nebraska. They had 5 children. The one that was my great grandma was Mae Elizabeth "Lizzy" Walling Atwood who married Logan John Atwood & had 10 kids. I being my grandma who had 4 kids (BTW twins run in the family) 1 being my dad who had 2 & I have had 3. So the blood & some of the names go on.
