Hi Sue, Sorry for the celay but have only just got back from the holiday. Well here goes:-

My Grand parents were Henry Thomas OLVER (1873-1918) and Florence Annie CLEMMOW (1878- 1950). I believe that they went to SA with at least one brother and sister around the turn of the century. My mother and her elder sister were born in SA in 1908 and 1906 respectively.

Granny had a sister called Lillian Emma (1884 – 1979) who married Christian Andries BRUYNS (1883 – 1953). They had son John Christian Andrews Clemmow BRUYNS who married Iris WALKER. Last known address for them is Box 102, Florida, 1710, RSA.

Granny Florence’s parents were Annie OLVER (1854-1920) and John Olver CLEMMOW and there were a total of 10 children including Granny. Annie’s parents were Jacob OLVER (1823-1889) and Milcah NANCE (1803-1892). They also had a son called Henry (born 27 Oct 1864) who married (I have been told) a K(?) KNOTT and they had three sons called George, Thomas and Wallace.

As you know the spellings of names seem to change over the years and it seems as though there is a connection.

As I mentioned in my earlier note there was a lot of intermarrying between the CLEMMOWS and the OLVERS. They were both big Cornish families and lots lived in the St Stephens/Ladock general area. I think that I also mentioned that most of my family history details for this side is tracing the Clemmow line.

I hope that this is of help. Please let me know and if this is the link then perhaps we can exchange our family trees.

Regards,

Brian.

Hi Sue,

I do not have a lot on the Olver family - most of my information is from the Clemmows. I think that the two families were closeley related and there was a fair bit of intermarrying.

I am going on holiday tomorrow and when I get back I will see what I have.

I am pretty sure that Grandad Olver went to SA with his brother so it may well be that your family comes from the brother. Any way I will have a look as soon as I can.

In the meantime if anyone else has any information perhaps they could share it with us.

God bless,

Brian.
Harry 'Vernon' Olver

Harry Olver D.O.B 18/03/1892, was born in Mill Street Bodmin, Cornwall, U.K. to Bessie Olver.
In 1909 he enlisted as a Private in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (D.C.L.I) and was sent to the 1st Battalion DCLI in Gravesend, Kent, U.K.
The next definite record of him is his marriage to Dorothy Alice Cox, daughter of Stanley Cox, at All Saint's Church Falmouth, on the 28/11/1914. The 1st Battalion D.C.L.I went to France and Mons in August 1914, so what was he doing in Falmouth, where his marriage cert' shows him as a Sergeant in The D.C.L.I, in November.
The London Gazette in 1918 records his promotion in the field to 2nd Lieutenant and award of the Military Medal, presumably in France or Flanders.
In 1939 he re-joins the Army as a 2nd Lt in The Auxillary Military Pioneer Corps, and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him as dying in April 1943. He is buried in the CWGC graveyard in Berlin.
I would like help tracing his career and life between the two world wars, and any information about his wife Dorothy, who CWGC records and Phone book records for 1956-1961 suggest was living in Wimbledon S.W London.

It is a long time since your post but I just thought to check to see if there was an Olver Message Board. I am descended from John Olver and Sarah Aunger who emigrated from Lisgeard, Cornwall, England about 1831 and have details about the first two generations and about the farm from which they came. It still exists. I also can share my grandmother's recollections about life in Beach Lake. Beach Lake is close to Carbondale so we are probably "cousins." Contact me if interested in a copy of the info.

Dear Nancy,

I had a William Olver b. abt. 1785 in Cornwall, England. I don't know his wife name, but they had two children that I know of. One was Mary Ann Olver b. abt. 1813, and she married a Robert Steadman. Her brother was also a William Olver b. abt. 1818. Their father the Sr. moved to Canada during the time of the War of Rebellion in 1836 with wife and the two children. He was suppose to have been an officer in the English army. Many of the Olver's came through Penn. but mine didn't. I'v tried a lot of things with no success. I even had a researcher in England looking through the officer records there. Maybe you can offer some leads
Thank you, Dorothy

I noticed that you are searching William Cropper and Rachel Fishwick from ENG.
William and Rachel are my gggrandparents.
As far as I can tell they had a son named Thomas and William and a daughter Mary Belle and maybe Anges.
I believe Mary Belle was born in Va abt 1855. Mary Belle married Martin Luther Hudson about 1895 in Md. They also lived in Del.
I am told the Indian blood runs through the Croppers but I don't really know if that's true yet.
Can you give me some information on this family?
Thank You
Debbie Richardson

Hi Debbie

I am sorry but I think we may be talking about a different couple. I have put down what I know about William and Rachel for you but I have come across nothing to suggest that they were ever in your part of the world. The dates are wrong as well as my William wasn't born until 1856 and Rachel died in 1885 with only 2 surviving children. This is what I know about my William and Rachel:

William Cropper was born c1856

His son William was born 1880

The 1881 Census shows William as a Boot Riveter	living at 3 Nether Street, Nether Graveship, Kendal, Westmoreland (now Cumbria) with Rachel, Son William (1yr Old)

Their daughter Mary was born 1883

Rachel died in 1885

The 1891 Census shows William as a Boot Riveter, still at 3 Nether St. He is a widower living with son (William) and daughter (Mary) also his mother (Elizabeth Atkinson), sister Annie (19), Brother George (18), nieces Elizabeth and Emily (12 and 9) and nephews John and Harry (10 and 9). Elizabeth is shown as married (not widowed) but husband is not listed and William is the head of the household.

The 1901 Census shows William as a Licensed Victualer at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, 46 Kirkland, Kendal, Westmoreland(Cumbria). Living with second wife Martha (formerly Simcock), son (William) and daughter (Mary), Marthas children Zachariah and Annie Simcock also nephew John Cropper.

This doesn't seem to fit with what you told me so I guess all I can do is wish you better luck next time.

Cheers
Gail
Olver in Cornwall and Northumberland

Research leads me to believe my husband is descended from Richard Orlando Olver who moved from the Landrake area of Cornwall to the Shankhouse area of Northumberland in 1915 and married Maria Irwin (nee Graham) a widow. We would love to make contact with others in the family. However this particular connection is of a delicate nature and, if you too are a descendant of Richard's, we leave it to you to make contact if you wish.
