Hi Sue,

I do not have a lot on the Olver family - most of my information is from the Clemmows. I think that the two families were closeley related and there was a fair bit of intermarrying.

I am going on holiday tomorrow and when I get back I will see what I have.

I am pretty sure that Grandad Olver went to SA with his brother so it may well be that your family comes from the brother. Any way I will have a look as soon as I can.

In the meantime if anyone else has any information perhaps they could share it with us.

God bless,

Brian.

Hi Sue, Sorry for the celay but have only just got back from the holiday. Well here goes:-

My Grand parents were Henry Thomas OLVER (1873-1918) and Florence Annie CLEMMOW (1878- 1950). I believe that they went to SA with at least one brother and sister around the turn of the century. My mother and her elder sister were born in SA in 1908 and 1906 respectively.

Granny had a sister called Lillian Emma (1884 – 1979) who married Christian Andries BRUYNS (1883 – 1953). They had son John Christian Andrews Clemmow BRUYNS who married Iris WALKER. Last known address for them is Box 102, Florida, 1710, RSA.

Granny Florence’s parents were Annie OLVER (1854-1920) and John OLVER CLEMMOW and there were a total of 10 children including Granny. Annie’s parents were Jacob OLVER (1823-1889) and Milcah NANCE (1803-1892). They also had a son called Henry (born 27 Oct 1864) who married (I have been told) a K(?) KNOTT and they had three sons called George, Thomas and Wallace.

As you know the spellings of names seem to change over the years and it seems as though there is a connection.

As I mentioned in my earlier note there was a lot of intermarrying between the CLEMMOWS and the OLVERS. They were both big Cornish families and lots lived in the St Stephens/Ladock general area. I think that I also mentioned that most of my family history details for this side is tracing the Clemmow line.

I hope that this is of help. Please let me know and if this is the link then perhaps we can exchange our family trees.

Regards,

Brian.

Thanks for the reply.

RE: My Grand parents were Henry Thomas OLVER (1873-1918)...
I found in our archives a file on Henry Thomas who made
a claim to the government for war losses - there were 2
pictures in the file of the damaged farmbuilding with a
man on it - I can only assume it was you Grandfather.

RE: My mother and her elder sister were born in SA ...
Were they the only children? Any brothers?

RE: Last known address for them is Box 102, Florida, 1710, RSA...
I'll check out this address and see what I can find there.

RE: Henry (born 27 Oct 1864) who married (I have been told) a K(?) KNOTT and they had three sons called George, Thomas and Wallace...
I found a family grave in a cemetery in Krugersdorp. Henry (Father), Elizabeth Jane Nott (Mother),daughter Leah who died age 7, son Harry who died age 14 while swimming and the mother's brother,James Nott who died with Harry when trying to save him.

I can send you copies of the documents and the grave photos if you want.

Thanking you - this info really helps a lot!!
Sue

Hi Sue,

Glad it helps. If you can email me the copies of documents and photos it would be appreciated.

Mum's older sister was Dorothy and she had a younger sister, Winifred Olive Maud (born in Camelford Cornwall on 8/7/1910 and a brother Leonard Ponsomby who was also bon in Camelford on 25/4/1911. Mum was about 10 months old when Gran and Grandad returned to Cornwall.

I am not sure exactly how this web site works and if you have my email address to send me the docs but if not let me know and I will give it to you.

God bless,

Brian.
