A Chickasaw Tragedy
A Fort Smith, Arkansas special: By the arrival of deputy marshals here today from Indian Territory, tow bloody tragedies of recent occurrence are brought to light. About three weeks ago JOHN M. OLIVER, a prosperous white man living near Stonewall, Chickasaw Nation, went to a neighbor named CROCKETT for some hay and Crockett refused to send any hay until Oliver paid a small debt owing him. A few days later, Crockett, while passing Oliver’s house, was shot and killed by Oliver. Several deputy marshals in the neighborhood pursed Oliver and attempted to arrest him. He resisted with a Winchester rifle and a pistol, and made a desperate fight, but finally, after being wounded four times, a bullet struck him in the mouth, killing him instantly
