O'Kane Family I am connected to is currently from Wisconsin. Looking for information on our ancestry coming from Ireland. We believe the first O'Kane from our line was a James (Jim) O'Kane in the Mid to later 1800's. Rumors have it that early American O'Kanes in my line might have been horse traders or possibly thieves. Also, believe early that my line is from Northern Ireland, possibly county Derry. Beyond that I am John. My father is John, my grandfather is Leo, and my greatgrandfather was also a Jim. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the response, It is good to know that there is another O'Kane other than myself who is/has researching/ed the name a bit. I am very busy right now with, but I love to learn more and anything you have would be great. My number is 520-529-3651. I am stationed in Tucson now and don't get to go back to Chicago much. I have been back to Ireland a few time, but still havn't been up to Derry. My family is rather small but represented around the US. Again, thanks for the response and I hope to hear more. And if I can be of any help just drop a line. V/r, John O'Kane

My wife's gr-gr-grandmother was Elizabeth O'Kane, born around 1870 in Ireland. She married Francis Divine. We have no other information at all about the O'Kanes, but would love to learn more.

I just came across this message board. I think that I may have some information about the O'Kanes in Derry as my mother (Mary Eileen O'Kane) was born in Limavady in County Derry. Her father was Maurice O'Kane and he came from a family of 10. If you would like to know more please email me. Thanks

Paula In all probability, your great grandfather was from Dunglady, a townland in South Derry near the villages of Swatragh and Upperlands. In fact the name Archie O'Kane is still in use there. Another possible mis-spelling is in the McGuckin name - it is also fairly common in these parts. Your ancestors may be recorded in the records of Granaghan church in the parish of Maghera, though these only go back to about 1830. Alternatively, they may have belonged to the parish of Lavey. Let me know if you need any more info.

Re: O'Kane, McGukin(McGookin) from Derry
I have no information. I just thought that it was interesting that my twenty year old son's name is Kane McGukin. So your byline caught my eye. According to our older family members, our name was also spelled McGookin until my husbands great-grandfather came to the US after the Civil War at the end of the 1860's. Later two bothers, Arthur and Sam came as well, though I think Sam went back. They don't have a lot of info about their ancestors. I wish you luck.
