Hello everyone,

I am creating a Ojalehto family tree in which I would like to include all Ojalehto's.
The tree starts in Kärsämäki, Finland.
If you are an Ojalehto or if you know
any Ojalehto's please contact me and we can see if it possible to connect you to the tree.

Regards,
Marcus

Surnames: Ojalehto, Kattelus, Heikkila
I am a daughter of Tapani Ojalehto born in Haapajarvi on December 25, 1875. Karsamaki is close to Haapajarvi and I know my father's grandfather took the name of the estate when he bought Ojalehto. Therefore it was the name of the former owners. I have been there and stopped at the church office. They gave me a name of what was supposed to be the original name of my father's grandfather which they said was Heikkila. My father had told me that his grandfather came from Kalajoki and was Kattelus. Can you shed any light on which might be the correct name? I have been surprised to hear that there are other Ojalehto's in U.S. besides my ancestors so am curious to know if they would be realted in any way. Miriam Byman

Hello,

This Tapani Ojalehto is indeed a bit of a mystery to me. I found his record in the emigration records but I can not relate him to my Ojalehto family tree.
As you indicate already yourself, it was quite common in the 1800's that people would take the name of the house or farm where they were living and as such change their last name when they moved to another place.
This complicates of course the family research I am doing.

Anyhow, it means that besides Kärsämäki, there is/was also an Ojalehto house in Haapajärvi.

In Kalajoki there used to live a lot of Heikkilä's (or Heickilä as they were called in those days).

Do you have any more information about your fathers ancestors? Any first names would be really helpful.

I will look your father up, the next time I am in the archive over here in Helsinki to see if i can find any more information on him and his ancestors.

A lot of Ojalehtos from Kärsämäki have emigrated to the U.S. and a lot of their descendants are still living there.

Thank you for your reply. My father Tapani's dad was Matti born in Haapajarvi 27 Jan 1835. In looking at what I have I have his grandfather listed as Fredric Erikkilä or Kattelus born on 14 Apr, 1799. His name in Kalajoki and bought Ojalehto in Haapajarvi. This is the puzzle to me since my father always said it was Kattelus and according to a half-sister in Finland some Kattelus had told her we were related, yet as I said before the Haapäjarvi church records showed Erkkilä. Ojalehto was quite large, 600 in acres.

Hello,

I found the following information on internet. This can be found on http://www.genealogia.fi/hiski

These are birth records of the county of Haapajärvi.
However only birth records until the year of 1823 are available

Birth date Baptism date House Father's name Mother's name Childs name
17.12.1794 21.12.1794 Jokela Henric Påhlss: Tulpo Brita Eskilsdr: Paulus
16.12.1796 18.12.1796 Henric Påhlss: Tulpo Brita Eskilsdr: Anna Maria
14.4.1799 20.4.1799 nyb: Hinr: Påhls: Erickilä Brita Eskilsdr Fredrig
19.10.1801 25.10.1801 Henric Påhls: Erickilä Marg: Eskilsdr Esajas
19.2.1804 21.2.1804 Erickilä Henric Påhls: Britha Eskilsdr Israel
17.7.1806 20.7.1806 Erickilä nybygg: Henr. Påhls: Britha Eskilsdr Britha Caisa
6.6.1808 7.6.1808 Erickilä bd:Henric Påhls: Britha Eskilsdr Henricus
12.4.1812 15.4.1812 inh: Henrik Påhls Erickilä Britha Eskilsdr

I hope that this is still readable. But anyway, Fredrig is born there in Haapajärvi. His parents name used to be Tulpo and later on became Erickilä

For later information I need to go to the archive. I will let you know here if I find something there.

Marcus

Thank you, thank you. I was glad to get the geneology site address. As you can tell I am new at getting this info by internet. I have only visited the church offices in Finland and had a friend find some info. at an LSD Library. I will use this site and hope to find more info.
In appreciation of your help Marcus, Miriam

Hei.
I'm a little late in this, but I did not find your message earlier. Anyway, I am originally Heli Ojalehto from Kärsämäki, but married to Seppänen. My family lives still mostly in Kärsämäki, I have moved away, and live near Helsinki.
My father (born in 1941) has been studying the family history for years now and we know, that two persons of the family have moved to USA in early 1900 years and never returned to Finland. Some little pieces of information of their lives and possible children there we have heard, but it would really be interesting to really know and hear from relatives in USA. We have been quite sure that Kustaava and Erkki have not died there childless.

Regards,
Heli
