Ojala is no doubt a Finnish name, and unfortunately for you,
a very common surname.
My Mother's name was Ojala.
We don't have any Donald Ojala's in our family,
that I know of.
I just got back from a month trip in Finland.
If your Donald Ojala is from Montana I would also like to know his family heritage.
I have a letter from a living 90 year old Heikki Ojala in Rantsila, (Near Siikajoki) Finland that gives info about my great uncle Jacob/Jaakko Ojala, born 7-18-1867 in Finland and went to America. I want to find his family.
Let us know how your search goes.
good luck.

My grandpa's uncle's name was Jacob Ojala (grandpas's dad was Jonas). I now own the farm that was originally purchased by Jacob in 1886. Jacob then sold it Jonas 5 years later to move closer to town (New York Mills, MN many finlanders here). I'm not sure if this is the same Jacob you are looking for, but I do know that when my great-grandpa's family came from Finland to America that they lived in Montana for awhile. Actually, I am curious about Jonas's life there. He was married & divorced there, & then married my grandpa's mom (Hannah) in & lived in Minnesota. I know he had brothers & sisters that lived there, & from what I understand some of them changed their surnames to me more american (?) I'm not sure if this will help you, but I thought I would tell you the info I know.

Dear Melissa,
Thank you for your Jacob Ojala's interesting info.
Sinse I have accounted for all of my Jacob Ojala's sister and brothers,
and none are your Jonas Ojala,
I think we aren't related,
yet.
In my search I did find
twelve Ojala's in the Ancestry.com
Montana Death Index.

Also I found
seven living Ojala's with Montana addresses and phone numbers in White Pages.com.
When I have time to follow up these possible Montana Ojala connections,
I will post my info.
who knows ?,
I might run into your Jonas Ojala.
Keep in touch.
You are more than welcome to e-mail me at macbun@kalama.com
Sincerely,
Alina McElveny

The name Ojala is Finnish, and it means valley as far as I know. The name is also Spanish and can mean "I wish" or "I hope". Obviously, it is pronounced differently according to the language.

My uncle is named donald, but he is about ten or so years older than your estimate. Reply back if this helps.
