Re: Ojala ancestors KIITOS BOB
Hello !
The only member of the Hirvaskari family we - I and my wife - actually met, was my wife´s grandmother, Anna Alina Hirvaskari (1882-1967). When she came back from America, she didn´t return to Siikajoki but settled in eastern Finland, where her husband lived. Therefore our knowledge of relatives who vent to America from Siikajoki is rather scarce - we weren´t interested in such things when Anna Alina still lived . All our knowledge about Ojalas comes from church records. Old people tell that Anna Alina Hirvaskari´s father-in-law also was a kind of healer and seer - much like John Ojala. I am a little envious because there have been no such persons in my family. Maybe that´s why I think that in those times seers and healers were as numerous as psychiarists and doctors are today. Obviously incantations and magic verse were in great demand in old times, - the collection Old Runes of the Finnish people contains about 28 000 incantations.
Nowadays doctors have replaced healers and antibiotics work better than magic verse. Of course incantations may still be quite practicable. For instance you can make a barking dog be quiet by saying: "Sulje Hiisi haukun suuta, Lempo koiran leukaluuta, Laita sulku suun etehen, Haitta hammasten välihin" (Shortly: Hiisi and Lempo are old gods which are asked to shut the dog´s mouth) If you say this forcibly and threateningly enough, you probably get the upper hand of the dog - and ashamed he stops barking.

KIITOS and Hi to Veikko Perttunen
Yes yes, You have found and posted valuable family information about Susanna Hirvaskari Ojala, and her connections. The information is new to me and will help me put the puzzle of my family together. Just today I recieved from Oulu, Finland, a paper about my Great Aunt Maria Liisa Ojala, born June 25, 1874 in Siikajoki, Finland. Maria Liisa's Mother was Susanna Hirvaskari Ojala. Maria Liisa Ojala came to America, married and had three children . Her marriage was unhappy. No more is known of her or her children. That is quite a puzzle. I have hopes that some day one of her children or grandchildren or great grandchildren will see these writings and recognize us as family members. thank you Veikko. Sincerely, Alina

Holy men common in Finland.
Yes Veikko, When I was visiting in Vihanti, Finland I asked my Ahola/Majava relatives if Finland had any famous Holy men. "Yes, yes, Finland has had many Holy men.", they said to me. Then my relatives took me to see the man-made cave, built by a seer and healer Mr. Myyliimäki. His cleverly constructed rock cave had two roman-like arches at each end to keep the doorway and window up and strong. The roof was an amazing circular dome constructed by interlocking rocks. Mr. Myyliimäki was a ditchdigger in his spare time. Yes I agree, in those old days, as YOU said, those Holy people were as common as Doctors and Psychiatrists are today. Thank you for the information about the Finnish runes. Woof Woof. Sincerly, Alina

Re: Ojala ancestry from Vaasa Finland
My wife's grandfather, Juho (John) Ojala arrived on Feb 4, 1910, sailing from Liverpool to St John's NB, destined for Ishpeming, Michigan. His ship's (S.S TUNISIEN)manifest indicated his father's name was Sameli Ojala, and the Juho was from Kaurajarvi, Vasaland, Finland. I've found Kaurajarvi near (~8mi) from a place called Ojala about 10 miles east of Vasa city. Any info you might have in your GEDCOM file that might fit these folks would be appreciated!
Thanks. George Braun
