I am looking for any information anyone might have on my great grandfather Sigurd Christian Oien. My search has stalled because family history is that he and his brother (name unknown) stowed away on a ship from Norway to America. It is believed his brother stayed on the east coast and Sigurd moved to the Dakotas. If anyone has a simular history or can help me connect some dots I would be very grateful.

Surnames: Andersen/Anderson Oien/Oyen
Hi there,
I am also trying to find a missing Oien/Oyen grandfather from Norway who went to North Dakota. He landed in the USA in Dec 1891 and we think he departed and went back to Norway sometine prior to 1908. HIs name was Melkor G. Andersen Oien and he was from Ovre Rendal. I think that I may have figured out that when my grandfather was in America, he went by the name of Mike Andersen. I have not been able to prove that Mike Andersen/son is Melkor Andersen Oien/Oyen but most of the details seem to indicate that they are the same person. So, I would suggest trying on any other family names or on what you might think would be an americanization of the name. Where is your grandfather from. My grandfather had a brother named Gustav Oien who supposedly went to the Chicago area in 1887 and died in that area in the 1930's. He must have changed his name as we have never found any record of him whatsover.

Hi Tracy,
Over the last couple of months I have been helping an American lady, the grand-daughter of a Sigurd Christian Oien, to trace her Norwegian family and I have in fact found quite a few Norwegian ancestors. The question now is are we talking about the same Sigurd Christian? The one I have was born 5 June 1877 in Norway, married Clarissa Mabel Barney 5 June 1909 in Oregon and died 10 July 1951 in Orange Co., Ca.
Is this your Sigurd Christian as well? If it is I have a lot of info for you, as well as some US cousins!

Hi there,
Thanks for emailing me. My grandfather who was Melkor Andersen (Anderson) Oien/Oyen. My grandfather may have changed his name while in the USA to Mike Andersen/Anderson who resided in Minnesota and later North Dakota and Canada.

Melkor had an older brother named Gustav who went to America in about 1887. We are not sure where but we thought it was the Chicago area.

Another brother was Andrew Oyen who lived in Minnesota, Washington state and later Canada. Our Oien family was born in the Hedmark region (Ovre/Otre)Rendal region of Norway, and Gustav was born in about 1867. Have you or anyone else come across any details that might interconnect the two families? Look forward to hearing back from you.

Surnames: Oien (Øyen)
When did they arrive in America? I am familar with one family with surnames Oien (Øyen in norwegian). But the given name Sigurd Christian seems unnatural for this family. But I saw on the net other Oiens that came from another place in Norway. For further work I need some years.
