Re: Joseph O'Hanlon NY

My father and mother - Robert and Emma Treichler - Swiss immigrants - lived in an apartment of a home owned by JOSEPH O'HANLON, NY Fire Chief. My sister Vera and I were both born at Madison Park Hospital in Brooklyn while parents resided there, Vera on 1 25 1933, I on July 31, 1935. THOUGH NOT A TIE TO ANCESTRY, you might like this anecdote. My dad's father and mother - Robert and Bertha Treichler of RICHTERSWIL, Switz., visited sometime in 33-34. Chief O'Hanlon had a FIRE CHIEF car with a fireman as chauffeur and was mindful of how my grandparents were totally amazed at EVERYTHING in NYC, and arranged with my dad to have his parents on a corner someplace way uptown at noon on a mid-week day. O'Hanlon arrived in the chief's car, and with red lights and siren carried the amazed tourists back downtown (I think along Broadway) in an adventure few tourists would ever get.

Dad had also arranged to bring his father up out of the subway on (34th Street???) where the view of the EMPIRE STATE simply gets larger and more imposing/impressive/ unbelievable the further up the stairs one comes. Grandpa came out craning his head and the further back he stepped, the larger the Empire State appeared, and he began step BACKWARDS into the roadway IN TRAFFIC. Dad said a huge Irish cop directing traffic blew his whistle, stopped traffic from ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS and walked over to granpa, wrapped his arm around his shoulder and walked him back to safety.

The ride in the chief's car and 'first view' of the Empire State were among the highpoints, in a story often told at gatherings.

The elder Treichler was a 'Kapitain' of the Lake Zurich Steamboat (think Switzerland's answer to the Staten Island Ferry) He eventually became 'Uber-Kapitain' or Head Captain of ALL the Lake Zurich Ferries, or as we later labeled him, an Admiral in the Swiss Navy.

Dad said he thought O'Hanlon was a big man in Tammany Hall.

I've been resident of Utah / California / Oregon since 1954, and the number below is (near) Portland OR (503) 642 2338 . As stated, no need to reply, but just an insight into what sounds like a fun-loving guy. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of Mr. O'Hanlon personally; our family MOVED TO Bellmore in 36-37, (I was ONE) and to Seaford in 1941. The house we lived in remembered from pictures was very similar to the house shown in the opening credits of the old ARCHIE BUNKER tv show. If it would help, I might be able to dig up the actual address.

Are you looking for pictures / other artifacts of that home. I DO NOT KNOW IF I COULD COME UP with any, but if these would be helpful, send me address / phone contact and IF I COME ACROSS ANYTHING, will inform you

Rob Treichler

Re: Hanlon/O'Hanlon - Dublin & Co. Kildare Ireland & possibly NY

Hi R. Stoneham, I am your O'Hanlon cousin from Dublin. Christopher O'Hanlon, son of Michael and Margaret Hanlon was my grandfather. Laurence Stoneham was my great great grandfather. My daughter and I have researched some family history and I am replying to you on her e mail.
I probably have lots of information that would be useful to you.
I agree that it seems likely that William O'Hanlon and Michael were brothers. I found a cemetery record for a William O'Hanlon in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin who buried a son 'Michael' in 1896 aged 22years and a son James who died in 1900 aged 36 years. This Michael could not have been my great granddad because he did not die until 3rd February 1924 and was buried in Kilbarrack graveyard but he and James could have been that of his nephews.
I have the remains of a letter that was part of memorabillia left to me by my grandmother Mary Kate(Cissie)O'Hanlon(nee Hynes). It is from New York and dated 12th December 1923. It is addressed to 'Mrs Christopher O'Hanlon'. The sender's address is on the back of the envelope. It reads: from M.Quinn c/o Mr J.J. Stoneham 424 E139 St N.Y. C.Presumably this is your great great granddad?
Christopher O'Hanlon, son of Michael and Margaret, married my grandmother, Cissie, on Wednesday 27th June in 1917, I have their marriage certificate. Margaret O'Hanlon was born in 1920 and Eamon(my dad) was born in 1921. Sadly both have passed away since. Christopher died in 1947 and Cissie died in 1959.
Peter O'Hanlon married Lily Shierclippe and they had a son Seamus. I believe Seamus went to America, married Leana and had four daughters, heresay only!
Lily, Aunt Lily as she was to me, was a very old lady when I met her around 1986. She was my Dad's godmother. I remember being brought to visit her for Sunday lunch. Two of the Killikelly ladies, who were my dad's cousins used to take her over to their house on Sundays for lunch. She was in a retirement home at that stage.
I have a receipt for a grave in 'Prospect Cemetery, the Garden Section' which is part of Glasnevin Cemetery. It is dated 1899 and is for the interment of a Mary Hanlon, signed and paid for by my great grandfather Michael Hanlon. I only found out that my grandfather had a sister when I read your page, you can't imagine my surprise. Given that Mary, daughter of Michael and Margaret doesn't appear to feature in either the 1901 or the 1911 census, it seems likely that this grave in Glasnevin is hers. It is also likely that she is buried with other family members. I looked up the cemetery records of Glasnevin, I haven't got all the results back yet but interestingly, there is a Mary Hanlon aged 70 years buried in 1899 and a Mary Hanlon aged 12years buried in 1898, which is very likely to be Christpher and Peter's sister and possibly aunt? granny? I'd love to know.
You have clearly done amazing research, well done and thank you. I hope I have helped your enquiries. I'll post again if I find anything else or if you want to ask me anything else. I live quite near Dalkey where the three Stoneham sisters, the dressmakers lived. I've seen the house where they lived. I was so surprised to read your page and realise that you were looking for me!!!
Dear Susan, I have been talking to you through emails and a couple of telephone calls a few years back however this recent happening has occured and has proved vital points. However I have discovered my Great Great Grandfather Michael Hanlon had a twin sister Anne. At the time of the 1901 and 1911 cenus there were to sisters living in the same townland called Eliza and Anne which were his to sisters that I have just discovered. However I done a search of the parents and a further two children were found their names were Patrick/ Peter who were twins. So this means that their parents Michael Hanlon and Mary Ann Doran had two sets of twins and one daughter. Have you come across this in your search. My email is dev11066543@students.src.ac.uk if you wish to discuss this any further.
Ciara

Hanlon/O'Hanlon - Dublin & Co. Kildare Ireland & possibly NY

I am looking for information on the Hanlon family of Dublin, sometimes known as OHanlon. They may also have had roots/connections in County Kildare. Their history seems to be very intertwined with my own family, the Stonehams.

My great-great-grandfather John J Stoneham married Mary C O'Hanlon in abt 1903. His sister Margaret was married to Michael Hanlon back in 1885. According to my aunt, Mary C was Michael's neice. Mary's parents, according to a cousin, were William and Catherine McCall. I have found a marriage record for William Hanlon and Catherine McCaul in Dublin in 1863. William's parents are listed as Michael and Mary. The Michael O'Hanlon who married Margaret Stoneham listed his father's name as Michael on his marriage record, but his mother's info is not recorded. It seems likely that William and Michael were brothers.

Besides the marriage ties, the Stonehams and Hanlons often were sponsors for each other's children's baptisms and witnesses at each other's weddings.

I also found a record that is from a generation earlier of a birth of Alexander Peter Hanlon of 28 Fisher's Lane who was born to a Thomas Hanlon and a mother whose first name wasn't included but whose last name was Stoneham. Although I do not know who this Stoneham was or how she was connected I feel like there was probably a connection. According to Griffith's Valuation my great-great-grandfather's father Lawrence J Stoneham lived on Fisher's Lane, so I suspect that one of his sisters married a Hanlon (whether part of the same family of Hanlons I do not know).

Michael Hanlon and Margaret Stoneham's children were: Christoper Michael (b. 1885), Mary Margaret (b. 1887) and Peter Laurence (b. 1888). I would be interested in any info on them. There is also a connection to the Shercliffe family. On the 1911 census they have Lily Scherfliffe in their household, listed as a niece. I found a baptismal record for a Thomas Joseph Shercliffe, born in 1891 to William Shercliffe and his wife Catherine (O'Hanlon). Mary Stoneham was godmother. She was also Maid of Honor at the wedding of William and Catherine in 1890.

I recently got in touch with a cousin descended from my great-grandfather's brother and she found some old names in her mother's address book. Included were Leana and Seamus O'Hanlon of Upper Grandview, 450 So Broadway, NY 10960. I think that zip code is for Nyack.

Other Hanlon/O'Hanlons that I believe to be related/connected are (I'm jut going to call them all Hanlon for simplicity - the names switch back and forth on documents, even for the same person):

Possible siblings for William Hanlon (possibly born around 1841 - who married Catherine McCall/McCaul) are Michael Hanlon (b. about 1859 to 1862 - who married Margaret Stoneham), Patrick Hanlon (I haven't found anything about him yet, but he was best man at William's wedding), Catherine Hanlon (who married William Sherlciffe/Sheerclief - her parents are listed on her wedding document as Michael O'Hanlon and Mary Smith), James Hanlon (I don't know anything about him yet other than that he was best man at Catherine and William Shercliffe's wedding), and Peter Hanlon (he listed his parents as Michael and Mary at his 1858 wedding to Ann Brien and a Peter Hanlon was godfather to William and Catherine's son Thomas). I will be doing further research on these people to see if I can confirm anything, but if you have any news I would appreciate the help!

Probably siblings for Mary C O'Hanlon (daughter of William and Catherine McCall/McCaul)are Thomas Hanlon b. 22 March 1866, William b. 5 September 1868 and Michael b. 17 November 1873.

I have found him on the 1901 census in Leck, Letterkenny and I think I have found him in Scotland in 1911. Since posting my query I subsequently found his first marriage in 1933 to an Elizabeth McGurk in Scotland but now have to find out where he was between 1911 and 1933.

I was born in scotland but my parents moved to Northern Ireland and live in country tyrone approx. 30 miles from Letterkenny believe it or not.

My research has indicated alot of clothes dealers/tin smiths etc in my O`Hanlon line but to be honest they all appear to be related to each other. Would be interested to know the names you are researching?

Have you tried the Irish national census for 1901 and 1911? What I would recommend doing is checking the census for counties surrounding Donegal also as the O'Hanlon family in Letterkenny that I am from (Chapel Lane, Main Street) were traders and got about a bit. The Scottish census may also be of some use.

So where in the world are you then? I am in Manchester, England, born in Glasgow.

Hi
I have come across a reference in the Gentleman's Magazine Notes and Queries of 1937 where L.E. O'Hanlon of Orior is asking for info on my ancestor Julien Le Grand. Does anyone know how Lettice Evoryna O'Hanlon is connected specifically to the Le Grands? (I have Letitia Ormsby nee Le Grand, daughter of William Le Grand of Canterbury and later Portarlington, marrying Dr. William Hanlon (O'Hanlon?) in 1848 in Powerscourt.) Thank you

Ard Cuillaigne Abaugh, or "Defend the Wooded Heights of Cooley", I think. Orchaill was a phonetically meshed version of the first two words.

From what I read in law school, the sept served as the traditional defenders of Ulster from threats coming north (regardless of what side). The ridge line from the Ui Meith peninsula (west side of Carlingford Lough) up past Mullaghbawn and Forkill was the "wood height of Cooley", as in, yes, the Cattle Raid of Cooley, the old tale.

I think I remember we traded the Ui Meith peninsula for a marriage, maybe a Fitzgerald bride, at the beginning of the 16th century, when we were courting the Earl of Kildare as he made his move to be First Deputy (some say "king").

You are right, though, in noting that as of that Hearth Tax roll during Charles II's reign, we were hard pressed into the mountains at the bottom edge of Armagh.

Also remember, we were not native to Ulster -- sept came out of the kingdom of Oirgialla to the southwes in 332 A.D. Some of the older families -- like the Murphy's and Dunleavy's -- stayed in the area, paying tribute to us.

Ard cullaigne aboo !

Dan

May take me a bit to dig out; concur with your observation on Hugh Boy's line. I do remember a citation from the Annals of Ulster, I think, locating Sir Eochaidh Oge O'Hanlon, who died around 1611, I think, as having a secondary seat at Forkhill. The sept's call,"Defend the Wooded Height", I think, was a reference to that site (Ochkill, in Gaeli). You are dead on re: O'Neill strength to the west in the Fews.

I never heard of a Manor in mullaghbawn or Forkhill ..Is there a source for this ?
From official Document from mid-1600s detailing such as `Hearth Roll Tax ` I would have thought it likely that the O Hanlons lost out the Sept Lands North and West of Sliabh Gullion . The success of Turlough O Neill of Glasdrumman in holding on to his castle and power may have resulted in the O Neill and murph names becoming more evident as officially registered Land owners .
The Hugh Boy O Hanlon , from whom my family is descended ,and other O Hanlons who held onto lands seem to be North and Eastr of Sliabh Gullion ,Killeavey, Duburren Sturgan.

My understanding of the sept lands as of 1600 were: castle at Tanderagee (somewhere underneath the current on, built by the Earl of Manchester; manors at Mullaghbawn and Forkhill (maybe the same) and some type of refuge for times of danger at Camlough. Given that the O'Neill (first Earl of Tyrone) prohibited the construction of permanent buildings in old Ulster, all but the structure at Tanderagee were probably of wood, not stone. Could simply have been enclosures, like a stockade.

Still keeping an eye on it; fear Gerry may have passed on. The Thomond reference is from O'Clery; he wrote with an intent, and sometimes he shows more solidarity among the septs than I think may have existed.

From what I can tell, maybe Hanlon's Pub was near the sept's manor at Forkhill? Is that the branch of them family you mentioned?

Defend the wooded height,

Dan Meyer
great grandson of Elizabeth Hanlon
dau. of Edward Hanlon of Co.
I know this is several years old . Your comment on Thomond and O Donnell is interesting .. In my family the forrces came back after the Yellow ford Battle and camped at a field behind o Hanlons pub in Mullaghbawn , Co Armagh.
Thomond is the old name for an area of present day Limerick Clare and Tipparary. O Donnells forces after their victory in Yellow Ford were to receive many defeats in this area.

Vera O'Hanlon Layden Pondolf(i) Sessinger of Marcus Hook, Pa., was my paternal grandmother. Her first husband, Andrew Layden was a U.S. soldier killed in Belgium in WWI, leaving her with three young children, Margaret, Andrew Jr. and Emily Layden. She then married naturalized Italian immigrant Emilio Pondolfi who had dropped the final i from his surname to become Pondolf. They had two children, Rita and Guido Luigi, my father, who used the name Louis. Emilio died of TB in the early 1930s, and Vera married George Sessinger and moved with her children to Atlantic City where George worked for the electric company. My father had his name legally changed to Louis Joseph Sessinger when he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942. Vera and George divorced, and Vera died from complications following a stroke. c. 1940.
-Louis Josephh Sessinger Jr.

Hi Dorinda, Another O'Hanlon cousin here my name is Andrea and my father and Anne's mom are siblings. My dad is the only remaining child of Paul (your grandpa Joseph's brother). My dad's name is John (Jack) and said that he has fond memories of your dad and to send his best to him. Now that the introduction and message has been delivered..I have been working with Anne on this crazy O'Hanlon train since the beginning and we had a few questions... Was there a twin somewhere that we don't know of in your dad's family? We have two Davids coming up...one with a birthdate in 1921 and one in 1925. Also, we don't have any dates for Natalie, Elanor and William. You said that your grandma passed giving birth to an 11th child. Was that William?

I also thought I would let you know that it appears that I have found that Owen came over using the name Hanlon on 30 Dec 1848 on the ship "New York" out of Liverpool. He was with a passanger John Hanlon that was I believe 2-3 years older. Possibly a brother. I found Owen, Sarah, Peter, James and John on the 1860 Census under Hanlon not O'Hanlon.
I know James is a new name to you but..James was 3 or about in 1860 and apparently passed before 1870 census. By the 1870 census Owen and family resumed using the "O".

This has been a crazy ride. What else should I expect my branch is certainly looney. Any and all help and info you have would be great.

And please pass on my dad's well wishes to yours. You can let him know that my dad is in fine health and still a B.S. artist he will be celebrating his 80th birthday on the 30th of this month.

Thanks much and hope to hear from you soon,
Andrea

O'Hanlons in Pennsylvania

I have 2 trees, each containing an O'Hanlon branch. I am hoping that at some point they will connect. Information on either of these branches would be greatly appreciated.

Roots in Marcus Hook. Trying to trace Veronica "Vera" O'Hanlon Layden Pandolfi Sessinger, daughter of John O'Hanlon and Margaret Mcgeary. Margaret's second husband was Charles Goudy or Gowdy. Margaret and John had 17 children, but I only have the names of 7.

Roots in Pittsburgh. Owen Hanlon or O'Hanlon and Sarah O'Brien had 15 children, but only 6 were still living in 1900. Owen and Sarah were both born in Ireland, but met in the US. Their first son, Peter, was born in NY around 1852, and they moved to Pittsburgh by 1861. Their son Matthew B married Mary Delaney, and they had 8 children. Matthew & Mary's son Paul Joseph married Marie McDonough, and they were my grandparents.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Anne Sorce

I also am descended from Owen and Sarah. My grandfather, Paul J O'Hanlon was one of the 8 children of Matthrew and Mary. He would have been your great uncle. I have just started on my ancestry journey so don't know how much help I can be to you but would be happy to hear from you. I do have some information on Owen's children, but my tree only goes back to Owen's generation.

GEORGE HENRY OHANLON

I am trying to find any information on my grandfather.
He was known to me and all the family as HENRY HANLON and indeed all the children took the HANLON name and the records for all of those i have found but when it comes to him i have drawn a blank.

He was born 19th April 1893 probably in Armagh, Ireland and it is thought he moved as a child to Kilkenny. It has been suggested that his origional surname was OHANLON and he just used the HANLON when he came to England and the GEORGE only came about when it was written as his name on my grandmother death certificate by someone who knew him.
I know he came over to England before 1922 as that is when my mother was born, other than that his past is a mystery. Sadly all the parties who would know have passed so i cant ask them.
Any help would be appreciated.
