The name Peter O'Hagan appears on my grandfather's baptismal certificate as godfather. My great grandfather's name was either Patrick or Charles. It appears as either on different documents. I always assumed he and Peter were related. Patrick Charles was born in Co. Armagh, I don't know the parish or town. I believe he was born in the mid to late 1800's. He had a first family in Armagh, then left for Liverpool, where he married again,a Mary White b. Aug. 1865. My grandfather was born July 4, 1900 in Liverpool and came to Canada at a young age after serving in the Merchant Marines. I don't know if any of this rings a bell. Good luck with your search,

Cathy O'Hagan

Hi Cathy
Here's some info I have on the O'hagans I know of as my own ancestors but unfortunately its as far as I'm able to go back at this stage, however I sincerly hope it can be of use to you in your own research.

I'll start from the top of the tree with the info I have on my Great Grandad
Peter O'hagan no birthdate available, he was from Bessbrook or Lower Killevy Armagh Ireland
The only dates I have on Peter are his marriage to Rose O'neill on 4-2-1851
His occupation was given as farmer
Their were 4 sons to this marriage as follows

Lawrence O'Hagan born 1853 at the same place

James O'hagan born 1854

Peter O'hagan born 1856 died in Albury NSW Australia in 1931(This Peter is my grandfather)

Patrick O'Hagan born 1859 died in America in 1934(could this be your Great Grandfather? )

I know that Peter came to Australia as a young man later went to the United States for some years then retuned to Australia about 1889 married Catherine Coliins in 1890 there were 10 children to the marriage one of whom was my mum Mary Margaret O'Hagan 1901-1970

I dont have anymore info on my Grand Unc Patrick or if your Patrick and mine are one and the same guy but it would be interesting if this were so.

Good Luck & Best Wishes
Al

Hi Al,

I can provide you with a some information(obtained whilst researching my own family tree) on your O'Hagan family tree. Your Grandfather came from Lislea, Lower Killeavy, Co. Armagh, Ireland. Your Gr Grandfather, also Peter (born 1814), was a son of Laurence O'Hagan (your Gr Gr Grandfather) who died in 1841 and is buried in Creggan Graveyard (near Crossmaglen). Laurence resided in the townland of Cornonagh, Greggan, Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh.

I have a fair bit of infomation which I would be happy to share with you.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi Ken I am researching a Peter O'hagan bn Creggan Amagh,1860 he is in 1881 census as single lodger in Stockton Yorks North Riding, in 1891 he appears married to a Mary and first child Rose O'hagan bn 1882. I can find no record of a birth for him or a marriage, his youngest child Richard O'hagan bn 1895 in Grangetown Yorkshire went to Omagh in 1919 to wed Margaret Mcaleer and then returned to the Middlesbrough Yorkshire area. The family "word" is they were farmers, and the Mcaleers were neighbous and bred horses, if you can help I would be very gratefull regards John Bye

Hi John,

I don't have a record of Peter's birth but, if you are sure he was born in Creggan in 1860, he is almost certainly a son of James O'Hagan b. 1825 and Rose Quinn who lived in Cornonagh townland, Creggan, Co. Armagh. They were married in 1859 and had 5 children (ref. 1901 census). Other children were Lawerence b. 1862 (went to Durham, England), James b. 1864, Mary b. 1867 and Richard b. 1875. If you search the irish census 1901/1911, see www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ you will find James/Rose and James Jnr & Richard living in the this area.
If you send me an email address I can provide a fair bit of information on this family. Note that your Peter O'Hagan and the Peter O'Hagan this thread is about (Al Bye's grandfather)were first cousins.
Hope this is helpful,
Regards,

Ken.

Hi Ken thank you for taking the time to answer my query.I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I fed the information that you put in your reply and all I get is "no results". So I will take you up on your generous offer of information on the family. The furthest back I got was the 1881 census in Stockton for Peter O'Hagan b. 1860 Creggan Ireland. My e-mail is johnbutchbye@aol.com and would really appreciate your help. I am hoping to make a trip over to Ireland to do some research, sometime,as I have another family not far away from that area I believe the McCormicks of Blackrock Dundalk,co.Louth and Co. Meath. Anyway thats all for now, Regards John
