Does anyone know of O'Hagans or Hagans from County Cork? The names weren't common in Cork. My great-great grandfather Stephen (born 1821) and mother (Bridget Slattery, born 1832) came from there about the time of the Potato Famine but apparently didn't meet until after arriving in Boston. The name may have been Hagan in Ireland and changed to O'Hagan in the States.

My Great grandfather wasThomas O'Hagan & was born rasied in the city of Cork in the county of Cork. His wifes name was Bridget O'Shaughnessy. I don't if they married in Ireland or not or when they came to this country. My grandfather (John)was born in Madison,Wisc. approx 1875 to 1880.He had a brother Art.The family story goes that he dropped the O' because of the way they treated the Irish in Boston. So he left Boston on a train and ran out of money in Madison and the family has been there since about 1865

My family came from Kerry, John Hagan and Bridget O'Reilly. I believe they travelled through Skibbereen in County Cork. When they settled in Canada they named their area Skibbereen.
I have lots of info on the Canadian O'Hagans.

I believe there is a port of departure in Co. Cork called Cobb. Don't know if this helps.

I always heard that the O was dropped because no one would hire the Irish in Boston. So, Hagan without the O sounded like the German Hagen. Germans were not so discriminated.

I also heard of the tale that the O Hagans were the first Kings of Ireland. Our ancestor, as his boat was about to make shore, cut off his hand and threw it on shore, because the first one to touch shore would be King. Our coat of arms has a bloody hand on it.
