O'Gara
I'll be visiting Ireland in Sept. 2008 and looking for advice on best research locations. My great great grandfather( Michael Timothy O'Gara b. in Co. Down) was killed by an english officer between 1826-1830 . His wife Kathleen and son Dominick Thomas O'Gara (b.1826 in Sligo) immigrated to America by 1830. There may be other family members that I don't know about. Kathleen lived to 104 in Canada while Dominic married lived in Pettis Co, Missouri.I will be visiting the Castle Moygara. I know they were Catholic. Don't know which township in Sligo they were connected with. Advice?

Hi, my great grandfather was Dominic Thomas O'Gara and he and his family lived in Missouri. He was from Roscommon Ireland. I probably know you. I am Barbara Roth in Albuquerque, NM. Please email me:

Do you know the names of Dominic's siblings and parents? My GG-grandfather John O'Gara lived in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. In a couple of Church records such as baptism and such- there is a Dominic O'Gara listed as a witness. Here is one record: Baptisms - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, 1846
O'Gara, Elizabeth
baptised November 15, 1846, born November 10, daughter of John O'Gara and Catharine Milllarky
Sponsors: Dominic O'Gara and Ellen McCarty,
There was also a Michael & Edward in Carleton, Ontario and I'm wondering if they are also brothers of my John. John came to Canada with his wife, Catherine (Milarkey, Mullarkey sp? and children, John, Bridget, Mary and Catherine. There were also older brothers not living at home in 1844 in Canada. Does any of this sound familiar. I have always thought Dominic was John's brother or somehow family.

Do not know if Dominic had siblings. His parents were Timothy Michael O'Gara who was killed between 1824-1830 by an English officer in one of the rebellions between Irish and English in Ireland. Dominics mother was Kathleen who is said to have traveled with her family to Canada, after her husband was killed. Dominic was born either in 1824 or 1826. The only piece of information I have on Kathleen is she lived in Canada to the 'ripe old age of 104'. There must be a paper trail, but I have not been able to connect with any certainty.Though 'traveled with her family' keeps me wondering who 'said family' is!
