Re: differences in ogans last name ;
That, my young friend, is difficult, if not uncomfortable. My wife's great-grandfather was named William Collins Ogan. That's where it started. William Collins [Slaven] Ogan, was a free man of color. I am uncertain yet as to whether his last name was Collins or Slaven. Due to the laws of the times, and the social attitudes, his father, Edward Ned Slaven, also a free man of color, let his son be attatched to the household of (Peter Ogan), in lieu of a debt of some kind. William Collins Ogan was "adopted", (kind of a twisted way of describing indentured servitude), until he reached the age of 21, whereupon he would be free to leave.

Re: differences in ogans last name ;
Not all OGANS are black. I have many listings for OGAN and OGANS. Al a rule listings for OGANS tend to be from the south. One must remember that many records are from census takers. We are in another census year (2010). Census takers were not always the most meticulous people. We must also remember that a name is spoken by one person and is interpreted and written down by another person. Right there are 2 possible sources of error, the speaker, and the spoken to. I have seen our name written as Owgan and Ougan, I have seen the hand written name Ougan translated as Dugan. This year a census worker came to my home asking me about my neighbor, since he would not respond to her questions. Now if this happened in, say 1880, and the neighbor was asked "who lives next door" and the neighbor responded, "Ogans," and the census taker then asked what are their names and the census taker took down those names, not intending to take the hike 2 miles up to the house at 6 in the evening. then that last name was probably recorded as "OGANS." I have records where some children from the same parents (OGAN) are listed as OGAN, some give a last name of OGANS.
I have a theory on the birth of William Collins Ogan

Hello Carol,
My name is Helena Young; I was Oscar Ogans' step-daughter. 74 Bradford was our residence for approximately 10 years. Milton and Felice Brown are my God parents. I googled Oscar's name this morning and saw your post with our old address on it, which is how I came across your post dated 1/20/05. It's been years since I've seen Milton and Felice, but I think of them often. If they are still living, please give them my love and express to them that I have not forgotten the wonderful times I've had visiting with them when I was a young girl...those are times that I treasue and hold very dear to my heart. My contact number is 707.592.4706; I live in Vacaville, Ca ~ I would love to hear from them.
