A man name Phillips (Jack)? was a union sympathizer during the Civil War. In eastern Tennessee Phillips sold horses to the Union Army. When the Confederate Army heard of this they hunted the mountains side in search if him. Uopn discovery of his wereabout they caught and hung him from a tree. After they left, his slave woman (Martha) assuming he was dead climb the tree and cut him down. However to her surprise found that he was still alive. His neck was so swollen that he didn't have a chin. His slave woman nursed him back to health and he began to fall back into old habits and started back in the horse selling business again. But this time when the Confederate forces learned of his recovery and his resumed business they found him and hung him again leaving not doubt. The slave woman hid with her children: one named Sarah Phillips (wife of Williams Ogan), fearing the lest they be taken back and sold to someone else
