Re: Honora O'Flynn

The story of the kidnapping, how pretty she was, her flaming red hair, and that she was a princess seems to be complete fiction. Of all of my ancestors, she is the one with the most crazy stories. These seem to be regularly embellished in romanticizing her life with absolutely no evidence.

The leads I am looking into are:
1. Her husband William did not pay his own passage. He probably came as an indentured servant.
2. Many stories claim Honora was sold to her husband. Back in the 1980s, a distant cousin told me she had found the court records in which William Logsdon had purchased Honora's indentured servant contract. I believe these records were in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. However, they could have been in Baltimore or Annapolis. The researcher died before I got a copy. An indentured servant contract is a historical probability.
3. Burial is supposedly in Carroll County, Maryland.
4. Marriage banns, 1702 in Baltimore. I read this a lot, but haven't seen an actual picture of the record.
5. William Logsdon/Logsden. named in "The Early Settlers of Maryland", An Index to Names of Immigrants Compiled from Records of Land Patents, 1633-1680, in the Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland. So need the land patents. This is not records, but an index. Still need to get the record itself.
6. Look for indentured servant and ship arrivals from 1695 to 1702 as the most likely time to find Honora O'Flynn.
Thank you for writing. By great good luck I checked this query again. I would love to hear more from you (I didn't receive the email you sent). I have found out a bit more since I left the message, but would love to know more. I know that he married again after he left my mother in England, but don't know much more. I've been in touch with his nephew, David O'Flynn, but he doesn't have many memories of my father. Please respond to felicity1@gmail.com. I'm really looking forward to hearing from you. Felicity

I only found this entry today, but I do have information about Patrick O'flynn. I have already emailed Felicity, as her enquiry was first on the Google list, giving her some details about the person we all knew as Patrick (or Connor Patrick actually). I'm only sorry it has taken me 12 years to find your post on Ancestry. If you ever read this please contact me. Patrick was my uncle by marriage.

Re: O'Flynn

Hi Vicki,

If you go to the Flynn Family Forum on:

genforum.genealogy.com/flynn/

and look at Message Numbers: 1352 and 2507, it should get you started with information on Honora O'Flynn and William Logsdon.

I also checked on Genealogy.com and it appears that there is a lot of information on this couple by various researchers. From what I found, William was born in England abt 1633 and died abt 1740 in Maryland. Honora, born 1678-1688 (information varies by researcher) and died abt 1740, seems to have been kidnapped from Co. Kerry, brought to Maryland and sold as a bride to William. They married abt 1702-1705 (information varies by researcher).

I'm envious that my Flynn's weren't as colorful.

Hope this helps.

Kathy

You probably mean she was born in 1861, not 1681.

No way to find any information in Ireland without parents names and specific birth location.

You need to do research in the US in her census, civil and church records before you can begin to try to find the family in Ireland.

There are no census records and no vital records for that time period. So you need to know the location to find her baptismal record in the church register.

Hello Christopher!!

I just found your message and I can answer part of your question right now and may be able to get the remainder at a later date for you. The name change was actually from "O'Flinn" to "O'Flynn". As for who made the change, I believe it might have been made somewhere down the line from Cornelieus O'Flinn who sailed from Ireland and settled in Paulding, MS w/ his two brothers (we just found out that one brother actually sailed at a later date than the first two). As for when and why the name was changed...I'll have to get back w/ you on that one. The actual spelling for the name was "O'Floinn", so there have been at least a couple of changes over the years. Feel free to email me at my regular address: globe.hopper@juno.com.

Hope this information helps and I'll try to find out more about the changing in the spelling of the name...it was something I was planning to look into anyway!

God bless,
Hope

Hello Jamie!

I was going through the message boards and found your message again and was wondering if you were able to find any further information on your dad and his family. I feel confident that, at the least, your dad was probably a cousin to my grandfather since grew up in kind of the same area. My great grandfather was John Patrick O'Flynn (aka J.P. or Johnnie) and married Vila Finch. J.P. was one of 11 children and he and Vila had 11 children. I do know that there are some O'Flynn's in the Hattiesburg area who are cousins and are related to J.P. in some manner. Our O'Flynn/Finch reunion is coming up the end of next month and your are more than welcome to attend. It will be in the Laurel area. You can contact me via my email address for more details: globe.hopper@juno.com I'm sure that some of my great uncles MIGHT be able to offer you some insight into the O'Flynns who live in the Hattiesburg area.

I pray this is some help to you.
Hope

Hello Carol!

I have found out that we have a Timothy O'Flynn in our O'Flynn line. He was one of two brothers of Cornelius O'Flynn who all came from Ireland and, we believe, eventually settled in the Paulding, MS area. We have recently found out that Timothy came over after Cornelius and Daniel (the third brother). We do know that all three brothers are buried at St. Michael's cemetary in Paulding. I am the great great great grand daughter of Cornelius. I received a message from a descendant of Daniel this past weekend who is planning to attend our O'Flynn/Finch family reunion (the eldest generation represented at the reunion will, I believe, be the great grandchildren of Cornelius). Anyway, I hope to receive more information at this years reunion. Unfortunately, at this time, I do not have the names of Timothy's spouse or children. Feel free to email me directly at: globe.hopper@juno.com if you would like more information.

God bless,
Hope

Carol & Jamie:

What a weird coincidence!! My grandfather was the late John Wilbur O'Flynn from Laurel. He passed away about a year and a half ago. He has 9 brothers and 1 sister (all still living) and most of them live in the area now (if you think of south AL to South LA part of the area, anyway). They are the children of John P. and Vila Finch O'Flynn. We have a family reunion in Laurel every June and we would love for any O'Flynn's or Finch's to come!!

Hope

Hi Jamie!

I don't know how much help it would be, but we have an O'Flynn/Finch family reunion right outside of Laurel every year on the 4th Sunday of June. Several of the cousins have been doing quite a bit of research and usually bring it with them to pass around. I did just sit down w/ my mother's information and couldn't find any of the names you mentioned, but that doesn't mean that someone else doesn't have it. The whole idea of the reunion is to get everyone together and meet new relatives at the same time. If you've lived in Hattiesburg your whole life, I can't see how you can't be related in one way or the other. This will be our 17th reunion and we are all looking forward to it. If you would like to go and see if you can find out some more about your dad, then you're welcome. Like I said though, I can't promise that anyone will have the information.

You can contact me directly at globe.hopper@juno.com if you would like to come.

Hope

Is there any way you can email or post the names of the siblings you know. We are looking for ANY connections to Cornelius, Timothy, and Daniel. We believe they traveled together from Limerick to Boston. They don't show up on the 1840 census, but they do show up on the 1850 census (or maybe it was 1830 and 1840...I'll have to check on that one). We are hitting a brick wall at that point! Any information would be useful!!

Thanks,
Hope

Apparently there were two Timothy's. The one that we are related to settled in the Paulding, MS area and we are thinking that he and two brothers, Cornelius and Daniel, traveled with him. We do know that Cornelius settled in Paulding and married Mary Ann (?) Crowley. Our research so far as shown that the three brothers traveled from Limerick to Boston. We also know that Mary Crowley was coming over to meet her father who was already here, and was sent to a different port than where her father was living.

Most of our family is from the Jasper, Smith, Jones Co. MS area.

PLEASE SHARE!!!!!!! The more information we can get the better we can research!!! You can reach me directly at my email address - globe.hopper@juno.com

I'm a descendant of Cornelius O'Flynn who settled in Paulding, MS. He is said to have traveled over with two brothers, Timothy and Daniel. We are hitting a brick wall trying to find when they arrived and where they ported - we think they sailed from Limerick to Boston. Any help would be great!!

Hope

We are researching our familiy history on the O'Flynn side. We know that our line of O'Flynn's are the ones who settled in Paulding, MS, but we are kind of hitting a brick wall as to when Cornelius, Daniel and Timothy came to America. We think they sailed out of Limerick between 1840 and 1850, but any other information you have on them would be great.

Also, as I mentioned to Ms Fugate, we have an O'Flynn/Finch family reunion every year on the 4th Sunday of June in Laurel, MS. Any one who is related to the family is welcome to come. If you have any research on the familiy, please bring it with you as several of the cousins swap info during the reunion.

Sincerely,
Hope

Re: O'Flynn's

Dear Ms. Fugate:

I was searching the internet tonight looking for some geneology information on several of my family lines and came across your message requesting information on your great grandmother.

My mother, Linda O'Flynn, is the grand-daughter of John Patrick O'Flynn who lived in the Slidell area around the 1960's. He was from a family of 3 boys and 8 girls raised in Jasper County MS and his nickname was Johnny. He and his wife, Vila Finch O'Flynn also had 11 children - 10 boys & 1 girl. All of their children are still living w/ the exception of my grandfather who passed away about a year ago. All deceased O'Flynns, to our knowledge, are buried in the Laurel & Hattiesburg area. The imigrants and their children we think are all buried in the Catholic cemetary at Paulding.

Several of the descendants have been researching the geneology of the O'Flynns and thier families. There is an O'Flynn/Finch family reunion in Laurel the 4th Sunday of every June and most researchers bring their information to exchange back and forth. You and your family are more than welcome to attend the reunion if you like - the more the merrier! At least part of the information that you are looking for should be at the reunion (mom takes her notebook everywhere we go!!).

If you would like to reach us, you can contact Mom at her work number (918)579-7877. If you are unable to attend the reunion, we might still be able to get the info you are looking for to you but we need to know exactly which one of the 8 girls you are searching for.

Sincerely,
Hope Evans
Great Grand daughter of John Patrick & Vila Finch O'Flynn
