Hi Chris,

Regarding "Connell" in the Moycullen parish record made by
Father Blake he records a "Pat Connellan" in Tullikiane
and a Bart. Connell who married in 1794 and a James Connell who married in 1808 and left the area in 1811 - both in Gorthacalla. It is likely that those "Connell's" were Connellan originally? See Surnames of Ireland by Edward MacLysaght. He does not give any detail for "Connell".

The name "Connall" in North West is a first name and Irish/
Scots Gaelic. In West or h-Iar Connaught page 75 you have reference to "The church of the four beautiful Saints in the
Aran Islands. You have the names Fursey, Brendan of Birr, Conall and Berchann. Sacred churches A.D.1645 O'Kealy, Archbshop of Tuam.

You ask about tracing the "Connell's" of Moycullen back in time. My view, impossible as there is no certainty as to the orginal name. The tracing of the O'Flahertie's is much easier as you have a line down. Check my more recent posts to John Breennan for detail.

Regards,

Jim

Hi Jim,

My great grandmother Cate O'Flaherty was born in 1845 in Portdarragh, Moycullen parish. She married Thomas Connell of Gortachalla in 1867, and they raised their family and farmed in Gortachalla, eventually passing the land to their oldest son Patrick Connell.

Cate O'Flaherty's parents were Patrick Flaherty of Portdarragh and Mary Margaret Mulkerrins. They passed their land to their daughter Margaret Flaherty and her husband Daniel Laffey.

Patrick Flaherty was recorded there in 1857 Griffiths Valuation. Bryan Flaherty of Portdarragh is recorded in the 1828 Tithe Applotment Books. In parish records of Moycullen 1786-1823, John Flaherty is recorded in Cartoor and Tullokyne, Michael Flaherty in Tullokyne, Mathias Flaherty in Portdarragh and Brian and John in Ballyquirke. In 1865 will of Thomas French (Dublin Deeds), Patrick Flaherty, son of late Francis Flaherty of Moycullen, is named among legacies regarding disposition of townlands in NE of Moycullen parish including Tullokyne, Kilcloggan, Curragh and Portdarragh. Morgan Flaherty of Tullokyne died 1779 (Prerogative Wills). O Flahartye were proprietors of Portdarragh, Tullokyne, Kilcloggan and Moycullen among other townlands in 1641 prior to the confiscations (Books of Survey and Distribution).

Thomas Connell's parents were probably John Connell and Cate Connell(y?) of Gortachalla. John Connell and Bryan (Bernard) Connell were recorded there in 1857 Griffith's Valuation. Bartholomew Connell was recorded in Gortachalla in 1828 Tithe Applotments. Bartholomew married Margaret Laffey in 1795 there, and they had many children.

How would you trace the connection of these O'Flaherty to other historical lines?

How would you trace these Connells back in time?
There are also Connells of Ower in Killannin parish "just over the fence" from Gortachalla, but what if any are their connections? And lastly, do you have any idea where Connells had come from? A y-DNA test of a Connell cousin suggests they are related to families tradtionally connected to the Inishowen/Londonderry area. How and why did they get to west Galway?

Regards,
Chris
Hi Jim,

Mary O'Flaherty died in Ballyvanane on 11 Feb 1905 from TB. The informant to the Registrar was "Sarah Reynolds, Nurse of Deceased". Sarah Reynolds was a daughter of Hugh Reynolds and Bridget O'Flaherty.

I've discovered that Bridget and Mary's sister, Ellen O'Flaherty (also a school teacher like Bridget Reynolds)died in the Oughterard Workhouse on 1 April 1905. Cause of death was stated to be "cancer of breast (operation)and cancer of stomach, certified". The informant to the registrar was Isadore Darcy, of Oughterard Workhouse. Her sister Kate O'Flaherty (also a school teacher) married Patrick Connor, son of Thady and Kate Connor of Roscahill on 1 Jan 1885. Although Thady and his wife are recorded in the 1901 Census I can't find Patrick and Kate in the Census.

I believe the Margaret Flaherty who married Rodger Lee was another sister of Bridget, Ellen, Mary and Kate O'Flaherty. Her father's name was given as "Michael Flaherty, Farmer" on her marriage cert and her son Robert Lee (1881-19 Aug 1957)and his wife Julia Lee (1881-20 Jan 1957) named three of their daughters, Margaret Mary, Kate and Ellen which names reflect the names of their grandmother's siblings.

Best wishes.

John Brennan
16 April 2012
Hi John,

The post office was West of the present Primary School on
the main Galway to Oughterard Road, approx. 1 mile from the
present church. Rosscahill West. Eircom building on roadside. Left hand side going NW.

It is no longer in use - Private House.

All post is now handled through the Post Office in Oughterard!

In regard to O'Flaherty: Killannin also has a record of a
marriage of Margaret O'Flahery to Roger Lee of Pollagh.
Date: February 24th 1879. Witnesses: John D'Arcy and Kate
O'Flaherty. They reared their family in Pollagh!

!901 census had a visitor to Mary O'Flaherty in Boleyvaunaun in Killannin, named O'Connor and age 15 years.

No record for 1911 for either.

Regards,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks very much for that. On the face of it Kate sounds like another sibling of my ggm, Bridget Reynolds (c1859-1927). Interestingly enough, Bridget and her siblings, Edmund and Ellen O'Flaherty had a brother called John O'Flaherty who married a Kate O'Connor, born c1864, on 29 Jan 1885 in Killannin Church. The witnesses were listed as Peter and Kate Connor.Neither appear in the 1901 or 1911 censuses and appear to have gone to the US. I found a John and Kate O'Flaherty of Galway on the manifest of the SS Peruvian which arrived in Boston on 9 Sept 1896 on ancestry. This might be the same couple. I visited Old Killannin Cemetery today looking for Bridget Reynolds grave. Sadly, I didn't find it as there are a lot of missing headstones. I did find the grave of her brother, Edmund O'Flaherty and his wife, Mary Leonard.Where is the post office in relation to the new church in Killannin?

Thanks lots.

John Brennan
12 April 2012

Hi John,

While doing some research on Connor/O'Connor, Killannin today I came across a marriage for "Kate O'Flaherty" to Patrick Connor, Rosscahill. Fathers: Michael O'Flaherty,
Ballyvanane (Boleyvaunaun) and Thady Connor. Both living
on January 1st, 1885. Kate is described as a Teacher aged 29 years and Patrick as a Farmer 27 years. Both were unmarried.

I believe that this is the same Connor/O'Connor who operated
the Rosscahill post office. Hugh Reynolds' home would be
approx. 300 metres West of this.

May be of interest to you in your research.

Jim

Hi Mary Ann O Flaherty nee Rooney had two brothers, John born about 1843 and Arthur born about 1838,they all came from county Mayo.

Harriet O'Flaherty married Albert Jacobsen in April 1878. In the 1911 census, Mary Ann was living with her son-in-law Albert in Liverpool. On the census form Mary Ann wrote in the town in Mayo where she was born, but unfortunately I found it difficult to understand her writing. I hope this will be of some help and I wish you the best of luck with your project.
Regards Tim

I hope to visit Killannin during the summer and see the old grave yard to find the grave of my ggm, Bridget Reynolds nee O'Flaherty. I'm amazed that she and her siblings survived childhood at all given how soon after the famine they were born.

John (and May?) O'Flaherty of Lisdonagh near Headford

I'm looking for information regarding the John O'Flaherty who lived in Lisdonagh House near Headford in the early 1800s. My g-great grandmother was Anne Mary O'Flaherty (married John Kilkelly of Mossfort). I've found references to her as "the 4th daughter of John O'Flaherty of Lisdonagh" and as the "sister of Martin F O'Flaherty". And I suspect that she may have been an aunt of Eva Kelly -whose grandparents are referred to in misc. articles as "John and May O'Flaherty of Lisdonagh".

The dates I have for her are a bit suspect, but I found one record that states that she was 88 years old when she died in 1896 which would make her birth date about 1808. But... she married John Kilkelly in 1841 (age 33?) and her 2 children were born in 1844 and 1849 - which would have made her 41 when her daughter was born...?

I'd greatly appreciate any information or suggestions anyone may have to offer.

J Murphy

Hi John,

Lemonfield is one mile South of Oughterard off the Galway
Road. Take the entrance on the right which is approximately
200m metres from the end of Kilcummin cemetery. It is private property.

I attach some copies of old photographs courtesy of:
Reflections on Lough Corrib 1990 by Maurice Semple, Galway.

I have a copy of West h-Iar Connaught by Roderick O'Flaherty written c1684 and edited by James Hardiman of Galway in 1846. Roderick was the last of the Moycullen branch in Moycullen castle.

It contains a genealogical list of the Clan in detail.
Original apparently is somewhere in Dublin? It is too
large to put on screen.

In relation to the present day O'Flaherty's, I am not
aware of connections. If you go to Griffith you will see
the extent of holdings in the Moycullen, Killannin and
Kilcummin parishes. Anthony had a large house in Oghery
area. No longer there. He had a share of land. The Seecon land is mountain and lake. Edmond had a holding in Ardnasillagh (beside the old Aughnanure castle)

You had Patrick in Killola. His family gave the site for the first Catholic school - half a mile from Fahy school.

Bye for Now

Coyne as Headmaster of Fahy NS in 1889 one of the people who wrote supportive letters on his behalf to the National Board of Education was a George O'Flaherty of Lemonfield who I think was a Justice of the Peace. This was a very decent act as Hugh had previously expelled one of George O'Flaherty's sons from Fahy NS because he brought detonation caps to school from a local quarry and one of the other pupils lost some fingers when they went off! I got this info from a file in the NA about Hugh Reynolds's dismissal from his teaching post. Do you know where Lemonfield is in relation to Killannin Church? Would you know if the Lemonfield O'Flahertys were related in anyway to Hugh's wife, Bridget O'Flaherty? Bridget's father, Michael O'Flaherty was living at a place called Ballyvarane, near Oughterard when he died in 1892.

John Brennan
12.1.2012

Hi there,
With James and Mary being such common names in Ireland, anything is possible, but I don't think there's a connection between our families. My O'Flaherty's haled from Wexford in the late 1700's and early 1800's and my 2x Gt GF emigrated to NZ in the early 1870's. I've also checked my tree and I do have a Kate born 1857, and a John born 1859, quite a lot earlier than the dates you mentioned, plus I don't have any O'Connor's in my tree.
Sorry I couldn't help this time. Good luck with the rest of your search.
Claire.

Does your mother have any specific information such as addresses, or businesses associated with the O'Flaherty's of Pattenspark and/or Ballyhaunis?

The pirate queen was quite a character!
O'Flaherty from Galway

I'm looking for information on an O'Flaherty family from Roscahill, Co. Galway in the RC parishes of Killannin and Kilcummin/Oughterard. The earliest O'Flaherty I have is my gggf, Michael O'Flaherty who is recorded in Griffiths Valuation as renting 15 acres at Killannin from Robert Martin. Michael had at least 4 children whose names were Bridget O'Flaherty (c1849-3 Jan 1927), Edmund O'Flaherty (c1851), John O'Flaherty and Ellen O'Flaherty.

Bridget O'Flaherty was a National School Teacher who married another NS Teacher, Hugh Reynolds, in the RC Church at Killannin in 1879. They lived at Gortnagroagh, Roscahill after their marriage and had the following children: Mary Bridget Reynolds (30 Jan 1881-3 Feb 1927), John Joseph (6 Aug 1884-18 Aug 1884), Winifred, (Baptism, 31 Aug 1885), Sarah Angela, (7 Dec 1887-28 Dec 1964), Michael John, (16 Sep 1890-23 Mar 1976), Anne Marie (15 Jan 1893-30 May 1975).

Bridget O'Flaherty's brother, Edmond who was also recorded in official records as Edward married Mary Leonard (c1855), daughter of a farmer, Stephen Leonard, from Roscahill on 5 Oct 1889 at Killannin RC Church. Mary Leonard had at least 3 sisters, Ellen (c1851), Bridget (c1857) and Anne Leonard. Edmond and Mary had 3 sons whose names were: Michael Stephen O'Flaherty (3 Jan 1892), Stephen Joseph O'Flaherty (19 Aug 1893) and Patrick James O'Flaherty (21 Jul 1897) all of whom were baptised in the RC Parish of Kilcummin/Oughterard. Any information which anybody may have would be appreciated.

My great great grandfather Michael Flaherty was born in Rathoma in 1866 to John Flaherty and Annie Devine. He had many full and half siblings - Patrick, James, William, Peter, Thomas, Bridget, Catherine, Mary and Margaret. Michael and many of his siblings immigrated to Chicago in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I think Thomas stayed in Ireland. Any connections?

Kathleen

Thank you Tracey - I have to check with one of the Manion cousins. From what I understand, the Manions and I guess some Biestys went to LIverpool before they immigrated to the States. Please note the other query in the message line that mentions a Thomas Biesty. That is another link to follow up. Let me know if you run across Hurgins, Rielys, Manions or Murphys. those are the families that seemed to have emigrated together and lived in Bethel, CT.

I spoke to my cousin today and she said that we were definitely related to the Biesty and O'Flahertys of Pattenpark and that my grandmother also used to visit a Biesty relative in England somewhere.
She said that you are in the same line as the Grace O'Malley O'Flahertys.
I am going to write to Anne Chambers to see if I can get a more accurate family tree with dates from her on our forefathers. I will keep you posted of the results.
Tracey

I had called Gerard Delaney at the South Mayo historical center and he gave me a ton of dates that I am still deciphering and he is going to work on the connection with me but he told me that if my cousin said we were related then we are!
There is probably court papers for Henrys death as there was an inquest held which was unusual back then.I will find out.
Henry also had a daughter born to him on the 4th of Dec 1881 but she died at 6hours old. Also there was a son John who died on the 11th of February 1880 age 10days.

Do you have an Owen O'Flaherty in your line as he lived in Ballyhaunis and had a daughter Mary who died in 1874 age 1?
Also there was an Ellen O'Flaherty who died on the 7th Nov 1891 and she was listed as a widow age 75 and a laborer. Her death is registered by her niece Ann Finn?I can't find any Finns in my line!I thought that it could have been Henrys mother!

It's awful that Annie never found her siblings but there were a lot of crooked social workers back then and babies just disappeared!
Anyway I'll let you know what else I find out and I will get more dates for you. According to Mr Delaney, the O'Flahertys all had some standing and were well educated in the Ballyhaunis area.
I know that my grgrandfather John O'Flaherty was a carpenter as was his brother Martin and I was told they were well read(educated)too!Their father Patrick who married Mary Ganly I haven't heard stories of but I am hoping to speak to the postmasters daughter this week as she supposedly knew everyone in the area and I am hoping she remembers me from when I was a little girl and helps me out!
Now Edmund O'Flaherty I am still working on but his mother I believe was a Jane Crean.
Bye for now
Tracey

Dear Tracey,
This is the same Henry O'Flaherty. He was supposed to have an accounting background which would fit with being the assistant registrar. His wife was Elizabeth Biesty (another Ballyhaunis family). The children include Anne Mary (oldest) who married Paterick Manion and lived the remainder of her life in Connecticut (the Manions, Rielys and Hurgins who also settled in Bethel Connecticut all emigrated from Ballyhaunis), Henry Patrick, Elizabeth who married John King, Margaret, Kate Deale (who would be the infant that you mention) and John Joseph.

How is he related to the line that you are researching?

You have dates that I do not. We are definitely researching the same lines. We visited Ballyhaunis last year and checked headstones at two graveyards and found several Biestys.

Do you know where Henry died? We understood that he was working in Galway. Elizabeth brought the younger siblings to New York with her when she visited Annie. Elizabeth died in New York but it must have been approximately 1894-1896 because Annie was too young to adopt her siblings and the State of New York essentially stole them and would not release the information to Annie, even when she was majority age and married. She was still trying to locate them in the 1950's, and it was tragic for her to have lost her brothers and sister with both her parents having already died.
Henry O'Flaherty according to my records was the assistant registrar. He died on the 4th of may 1886 and there was an inquest held after this death so with him dying at 45 must have been a shock and then his wife known as ELiza lost a baby girl Kate on the 9th of July 1886 age 1 day. I have more that I will look up! Does any of this sound familiar?
Tracey
