James O'FARRELL, St. Malachie (East Frampton), Quebec 1820

Surnames: O'Farrell
I have seen some posts on this board referring to [Captain] James O'FARRELL who came to Quebec about 1820 from Ireland. The family settled in St. Malachie / Malachy, Quebec. I am looking for the names of his wife and children and any dates of birth, marriage or death.

One of my DUNCAN ancestors married an O'FARRELL in St. Malachie.

Thank you,
dduncan

Hello dduncan,

I am a Duncan too and there is a story in my family that our Quebec Duncans descended from Captain James O'Farrell. In fact, my brother James O'Farrell Duncan was named after him. But I have been unable to get farther back than my Great Grandfather and complete the line back to O'Farrell.

My Grandfather is John J. Duncan married to my grandmother Audrey Luther.

His father was John Duncan 1865 to 1940 and mother was Ellen Nellie McGrath 1874 to 1965

Would love to swap any information!
All best,
Maura Duncan Welch

Maura,
Wow! You are the first St. Malachie DUNCAN descendant that has found my posts. I would very much like to share info. I have a lot!
Ancestry's NOT letting me contact you via email - nor see your public tree - unless I pay for a subscription.

Here's a start on the DUNCANs in your lineage...

John DUNCAN
Baptized: 27 Sep 1863, St-Malachie Catholic
Died: Sept. 1940
Father: Robert DUNCAN
Mother: Margaret O'FARRELL
Wife: Helen McGRATH
Married: 9 October 1899, St-Malachie Catholic Church

Robert DUNCAN
Born: 6 January 1827 [per 1901 Census], in Ireland
NOTE: Born a Presbyterian, Church of England. Must have converted to Catholicism.
Father: James DUNCAN
Mother: Mary Ann McCONNELL
Died: 11 June 1907
Married: 17 Feb. 1846, St-Edouard Catholic Church
Wife: Margaret O'FARRELL

James DUNCAN
Born: about 1801 Ireland, Presbyterian
Died: 7 Dec. 1885, Frampton Quebec, Church of England/Anglican
Death record says, "James DUNKIN formerly of Londonderry Ireland G. B." [Great Britain]
Married: about 1826, most likely Northern Ireland
Wife: Mary Ann McCONNELL [It is NOT McCARTHY nor MacDONALD]

BMD events in Ireland for earlier than 1840 are hard to find.
As far as I can find, Robert DUNCAN was James DUNCAN's oldest child.
I did find a Baptism for a daughter of James DUNCAN & Mary Ann McCONNELL.
Esther DUNCAN, her Baptism occurred at the First Presbyterian Church of Derry, Co. Londonderry, Ireland on 10 July 1828.

So, Esther's Baptism confirms James DUNCAN's death register which says, "formerly of Londonderry Ireland".

I think the person referred to as "Captain James O'FARRELL" is:
James O'FARRELL who married Rose "Rosie" DOYLE
Married: 17 Feb, 1846 at St-Edouard Catholic Church
Born: 3 August 1823, [maybe of County Longford, Ireland]
Lived in Buckland, Dorchester Co., Quebec, Canada
1901 lived in St-Malachie, Dorchester Co., Quebec, Canada
Died: February 1907, buried in St-Malachie Catholic Cemetery

I don't know why online posts from other people call him "Captain".
Was he in a war or captain of a ship?
Or do I have the wrong James?
