Hello again,
I wonder if your research has gone any further in Wiltshire?
I have learned more about my Ody family in the last year, specifically that John and Anne Ody or Oddy lived in Monmouthshire, Wales in 1841 and are connected to my family. By 1850, Anne and sons are in Pennsylvania and remain there on the 1860 census. The boys were Edwin, Richard, John and perhaps James. One declared that he was born in Gloucestershire, another says England. I am not sure if any of this information is of interest, but would be interested in hearing about your research that you mention in 2007.
Ody family -- Male DNA testing?

My own Ody ancestors came from Wiltshire -- the village of Wroughton. I recently had my Y chromosone tested (this DNA descends unchanged from father to son and so on). I found that I belong to Haplogroup I1b. This DNA is rare in the UK, but very common in the Balkans (e.g., Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia). One theory for how it might have reached the UK is that this was a key recruiting area for the Roman legions. I wondered whether any other Ody males had undertaken this Y chromosone test, and if so what their results were.

It has been some time since writing this board.
My interest is Mary Ann Ody b. abt. 1805, and sister Lucy b. abt 1811 Mary Ann married Robert Bark in London in 1832.
I think that Lucy did not marry , since I have her on both the 1861 census in Toronto and the 1850 census in Pennsylvania (on the way to Toronto) with her sister Mary Ann Bark. Lucy's ages on both censuses agree with birth in 1811.
I found an 1841 census with Lucy age 30, in Malmesbury, Parish of St. Pauls living with mother (I think) Mary age 60.
There also seems to be a Welsh connection because on the 1841 census in Pontypool, Sarah Bark & Charles Bark, children of Mary Ann Ody/Robert Bark are living with Ann Oddy and sons her John & Edwin. I am presuming that Ann Oddy is somehow related to these children.

For 1 year we have had a Wiltshire researcher helping us work on names in Wiltshire including Ody. He is doing research before 1800. The pieces to the puzzle are still very scattered but progress is being made.Any help would be appreciated. Sometime in the near future We should be able to post the results of the research on rootsweb world connect where it can be shared for free. Wills took our research back from variations (several) of the Ody name.
Malmesbury appears often in our research.
LMW

I have found new info regarding Westly B. Ody, b. abt 1868 and living with Samuel J. Knorr and Ella "Littlefield" Knorr in Missouri during the 1880 census. Ella was the dau of Margaret H. Peppers / Pepper who married (1) T. A. Littlefield and (2) 9 Mar 1865 in Tazewell Co., IL. Anthony B. Ody, born Nov 1834 in England. The census indicates his parents were both born in England and he immigrated to America in 1856. During the 1900 census Anthony and Margaret Ody were livnig in Abeyton (Gulnare) Las Animas, Colorado.
They may have had four children but I have not been able to make any connections yet. The dates make it possible that Westley / Wesley Ody could have been their child and hense the reason he was living with Margaret Ody's daughter Ella and her husband.

I can't add much to what you will find on the IGI but I can tell you that Mary ODY, d/o William & Mary (née LITTLE) married Charles YERBURY, a Coach Builder from Frome (probably s/o John YERBURY & Jane) - I don't know where or when. Charles & Mary were in Birmingham in 1841 and then went to Shrewsbury where he died in 1868 (hers is registered in Atcham dist. in 1887). Their Wills are at Shropshire RO. So far as I know there were no children.

I believe the Anthony Bath Ody who married Margaret Pepper Littlefield and the William Ody who married Ann Ford were brothers, grandsons of George Ody and Hester Woolford, enumerated with them in 1841 census in Witlshire. The connection is that Hester Woolford Ody's brothers, Cornelius and William, immigrated to MA in the 1830s, and there families living in the Wrentham, Franklin, Medway area. The birth for Nettie Levine Ody, 22 Nov 1867, dau. of William B and Ann Ford was recorded in Medway.

Westly Ody was with Samuel Knorr family in MO. Samuel's wife, Ella, was stepdaughter of Anthony Ody. Anthony Bath Ody served in the Union Army, enlisting from Wrentham MA. I believe he was in Wrentham because his Woolford kin were there. Westly was in the King county hospital in Seatlle at the 1930 census. William Ody and Anthony Ody were enumerated with George and Hester (Woolford) Ody in the 1841 census in Wiltshire. In 1851, Anthony was again enumerated with George and Hester as grandson. So who were the parents of William Bath Ody, Anthony Bath Ody and Nettie Ody?

Hi David ( I have a cousin David Ody in Perth, Australia!).
The Chris Ody I've been in contact with is about 40ish and living in Oxford. He does a lot of gigging in the pubs around Oxford, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire way. I haven't seen him yet but he sent a brochure a while ago with his picture on it. He's about 6ft with shoulder length black hair. I haven't been in touch with him lately but he knows a heck of a lot about the Ody's but not my side of them. Mine were from WIltshire, Devizes, Lyneham, Malmesbury. My Grandfather was Herbert Ody and he was one of about 8 children. My Dad (Ivan) has now departed and only have one uncle (Keith) living in Oz (David's father).
So, don't know if any of this helps but I could contact Chris for you to see if he knows anymore about your side of the family.
NB - The Ody's came to this country from Normandy and Germany with William the Conqueror and one of them was apparently the half brother of King Richard the Lionheart!! Other than that, I don't know a lot more, so if you do, I'd be grateful for the info.We might have some unclaimed land somewhere, eh! Ha ha!
Good luck!
Annie

Hello from Canada!
I have just learnt that my 3rd great grandmother was a Mary Ody who married William Woolford in 1813 in Rodbourne Cheney, then a village just outside of Swindon, Wiltshire. So it seems that we must be distant cousins. I too am trying to find out about the Odys from Wiltshire. I have the 1851 census for Wiltshire and will be looking at that. I know that this census is too late for Mary Ody but I shall try to build up a profile of the Ody clan in Wiltshire if that is possible. My home email is afb@interbaun.com Please contact me there. I am using the office computer during a break at the moment-before students come for interviews. Hope to hear from you soon.Tony Flemming-Blake

In answer to your question, yes. My branch of the family originated in Wilshire. We have records going back to the mid 18th Century. It seems that Ody has been a not unknown name in that county for many years.
The first reference to the name I have met was in the year 1290 in Worcester. There was a knight, Sir John Ody, mentioned at that time. Needless to say, I have no method of determining if he has anything to do with our lot!
In my own case, our branch of the family moved from Wiltshire to south Buckinghamshire in the middle of the 19th Century. We have been in an around the area for the last five generations.
Brian Ody
(Now resident in Warwick)

Hi, fellow Odys! I'm from Gloucestershire. My father Ivan came from Lyneham, Wiltshire, as did my Grandfather, Herbert Ody. Wiltshire was one of the places the first Ody's took up residence when they came over from Normandy with WIlliam the Conqueor. I believe Stephan Odo (where the Ody name derives from) was the half brother of King Richard the Lionheart no less! Can anyone check this out? Maybe we've all got some unclaimed land or inheritances somewhere! I can but dream! The Ody motto is "Nil desperandum" or as I and all my family members have always said (before we knew of this!) "Oh well, never mind eh?" Is this info any help to you, and any other kinfolk out there? If you know anymore, do tell! Cheers. Annie

Wesley Ody was the son of William Bath Ody & Ann Ford, both born in England. He had a brother, William Anthony Ody & a sister, Nettie Ody. William ended up living w/an uncle, Thomas Ody and his wife, Mary, in Hudson, Columbia Co., NY in 1880. I don't know what happened to Nettie. My brother is a descendent of William Anthony Ody; and we don't know why the family was split up in 1880. It seems that Wesley ended up in the state of Washington and never married. Have you found any further information on this family, since posting. How is it, a 12 year boy ends up in Badger, Vernon Co., MO.

Holly gallowaygal@att.net
