I have Odams from South Molton who moved to Exeter. Also from Filleigh. I haven't yet managed to tie them together, but I hope that eventually I will. If any of your Ide Odams seem to have any connection with S Molton or Filleigh I'd be grateful to hear about it. I believe my earliest Odam was born c1776 in S Molton.

Hi Spencer,
Although I have no records to connect the Ide ODAMS to the Exeter lot I strongly believe that they would be connected. I do have odd records of BDM's but nothing you could put together to make a line. The ODAMS were in Ide in about 1600 and Elizabeth ODAM d of William and Elizabeth ODAM born Ide 1716 C married John SATERLY in Ide in 1740. I had an inquiry from another party a few years ago but her lot were from outside Ide and Exeter.

Jim, Spencer, and anyone else who might be able to help:

I would like to contact a male Odam whose ancestors were of the Exeter group, for yDNA testing. My ancestor is thought to have been a John Odam, who came to Nansemond County, Virginia (America) around 1662 from somewhere in the British Isles. I have had the yDNA test for myself and I am in haplogroup I1. Most of the other 90 or so Odoms (Odams) that have been tested by Ancestry.com are in haplogroup R1b, but we have 6 individuals in our matching I1 group. I have a burning desire to trace my Odom roots back "across the pond" and would be happy to pay for the yDNA test for an Odam male of the Exeter group. I recently recruited an Odam male with origins in London for the yDNA test, but his results did not match mine. In fact, although his results indicated haplogroup R1b, he didn't show a close match with any of the other Odom participants. Thank you in advance for any help you can give in locating an eligible and willing Odam male. My email address is: owodom@mail.utexas.edu

Spencer,

The yDNA test works only for the all-male line, as the y chromosome is passed down almost unchanged from father to son. Females don't have the y chromosome so they cannot pass it to anyone. So for testing the Odams from Exeter what we need is a male still bearing the Odam surname, who would have inherited the "Odam" y chromosome from his father, who in turn would have inherited it from his father, etc.

Cheers,
Obed
