Ocampo Family- Joe and Hilaria's (Lopez) family
Hi, I have hit a brick wall trying to research my Dad's family (Ocampo).....I got as far as as my Granfather Joe Ocampo, son of Jose and Carmen (De Luna) Ocampo. All I can figure out is that my Great Grandfather was born in Mexico abt 1886 and possibly died abt 1918....or maybe left his family and came to USA as a single man. Carmen is wife/widow came to USA with her children and married a Garciain the US. If you have further information about Jose Maria Epiphanio Ocampo pleas send a message. Thanks and God Bless

Hi Teri, this is your cuz Sam.i also hit a dead end at Trinidad Calera...probably requires more intensive research going all the way to Andalucia Spain where she was born. maybe Sevilla or Cordova.Good luck, Sam...

Re: Ocampo Family- Joe and Hilaria's (Lopez) family
hi teri, i found an epifanio ocampo mejia on the mexico 1930census on ancestry .com...i believe this was carmen de luna's husband that she left when she came to the usa...she crossed into texas along with granpa joe and the rest of the kids, then moved to arizona (yuma) where she met and married severo garcia and came to california. the reason i believe that epifanio ocampo mejia is our great grandfather is that the birthdays and place of birth match up for him and jose maria epifanio ocampo...and there are household members with him named de luna!

Hi Sammy,
I am so sorry I took so long to view this message I have not gotten on Ancestry in quite awhile but I was motivated by the recent passing of Uncle Cookie in Chula Vista. I was so shocked to see your postings.
I will check further into your information and speak to my dad about it. Gosh it was so great to hear from you.

Re: Ocampo Family- Joe and Hilaria's (Lopez) family
Hi Teri, Glad to hear from you finally.Yes, i heard about Uncle Cookie's death recently from my sister. Very sad the way our uncles are passing so quickly! I have been trying to research as much as i can Mom's family and had some surprises along the way...For one thing i found out that Ocampo was originally Portuguese and it means "the field"...O means "the" in portuguese and "campo" is field. I downloaded a picture of grandpa Joe and his two sisters off of an immigration record of Texas border crossings on Anecestry .com! He was 19 years old! They were just kids!!!i showed it to my Mom and she had never seen this pic before. It really affected her and she started to cry.Anyway, hope we keep in touch and share family info also...Take care and say hello to Uncle Henry and Aunt Patsy and your bros... Sammy C.

Hi Sammy! Sorry...I don't get on this too much but I will try to keep on top of it! I am thankful for so much of the history you have accomplished already. I was watching that program last night "Who do you think you are" and it made even more motivated again. I will pass on your information to my parents.
Did you place that photo on your tree?
Please give Tia Carmen hugs from me too!
Even though time and miles seperate us, our love of family will always stand!

Re: Ocampo Family- Joe and Hilaria's (Lopez) family
Hi again, I'll pass your well wishes to Mom. Her short-term memory is begining to disappear from Alzheimer's disease I hope it doesn't affect any other family members. on the subject of "Who do you think you are", I had my DNA tested on this website and it did not come out the way I expected! My Y DNA has origins in Scandinavia 30,000 years ago or so. Mom's mtDNA has its origins in the Middle-East(West Asia).Somehow through migrations in between Ice Ages both ancient ancestors arrived in Northern Spain and Sardinia at about the same time, give or take a couple thousand years or so,and from there ancestors from both families made there way to Mexico then on to the USA and became what they are today! Anyway, that;s the short story...Take care.

Hi my name is Alyssha. We are related through carmen de luna. My great grandma is Lorraine Garcia. I am also trying to if more info on Trinidad and I only have so much info from my great grandma since she is still alive. Have you found more info since your last post?

Re: Ocampo Family- Joe and Hilaria's (Lopez) family
Hello Alyssha, Yes, I remember your Great grandmother in Pico Rivera where I grew up.I've not found much more in the way of information regarding Great, great grandmother Trinidad Calera. That may require a trip to Spain to research the actual Spanish archives. However, I have done some dna analysis and have come up with some very interesting results. On my Mom's side (Carmen Moreno (Ocampo), the blood line leads to the Middle-East and North Africa specifically. This is the land of the Berber tribes who where brought to Spain by the Arabs to conquer Spain from the Goths. They were a mixture of Muslim and Jewish people. Eventually they were "driven" out of Spain but many were converted to Catholicism by the Inquisition and stayed in Spain. These same people (Berbers) were brought to Mexico by the Spaniards to conquer and convert the Native Mexican peoples.Ironic huh?...Well, it turns out that the Ocampo bloodline came out of those Berber ancestors and very, very likely were of Sephardic Jewish origin! The surname De Luna is also a Sephardic Jewish surname...You never know what you'll find when you start digging!!! your distant cousin, Sam Covarrubias
