James O'Callaghan to San Francisco in 1849

Surnames: O'Callaghan, McBride
Once James O'Callaghan arrived in San Francisco for the gold rush, we have fairly good records. He was born in Ireland about 1820 and died in San Mateo County in 1866. Pioneer materials indicate he immigrated to the US about 1827 (word of mouth); names of parents, port of entry/date and birth details are unknown. Family legend indicates James was born in Mallow, Cork. We do not know if he had siblings. He was supposed to have led a regiment of the New York Volunteers about the time of the Mexican War (California about 1846) but his regiment never traveled to California. He is always referred to as Captain James O'Callaghan. He married Margaret McBride (born in Ireland; raised in Brooklyn) but we do not have documentation. Six children were born in California. We have not located naturalization records for James.
Your help finding early history for "Captain" James O'Callaghan would be appreciated.

Your message was posted a year ago, so you may have already tracked down the information you need, but I have a James O'Callaghan in my tree on Ancestry.com, who was born around 1820 in Ireland, married Margaret McBride, and died in California in 1866. If my James is the same as your James, my great great great grandfather, Owen, was his brother. I have the names of his parents and siblings, and their descendants if you would like access to my tree.

Rooksann, it is the same James O'Callaghan. We would very much like to see your information. We are looking for primary source documents that puts James in this same family with Owen. I have seen Wauconda, IL connection and have not been successful with the search across the pond to County Monaghan. Thank you.
