Debbie Oborne Smith is my second cousin. Debbie's father and my father's mother were brother and sister. Debbie's father was Charles Oborne, the youngest of Argath's seven children and May Oborne was my grandmother, and one of Charles' older sisters. I saw on some website where Argath graveled with a friend who was recruited to come work in US mill. I wish I could find that story. I don't have Debbie's contact information anymore either. We lost touch. I know she lives in New Jersey or she did several years ago. I actually never met her. My family moved to NC where I was born and Debbie's family stayed up north. I'm having a hell of a time trying to find out about my family. :::::clawing face:::::: hahahahaha

Take care

I didn't find Argath or father on the ship manifest of passengers with Herbert. What more can you tell me about Herberts family? I will start looking here for them but I've seen nothing yet. I know nothing, nothing about the Obornes except what I have told you. A few years ago on GenForum there was a woman Deborah Oborne Smith who had posted looking for information on Argaths relationship to Herbert. I tried responding but the email bounced back so I had no connection. Herbert didn't come to the US until 1884 so I don't know why they don't show up in the 1881 UK census, unless they do but misspelled. Thank you for the help you have given thus far. It is really appreciated.

Ignore my theories on my last posting - I have found Argath!

Argath Oborne was the tenth child of Harry Argath Oborne and so was the brother of Herbert.

If you type in "Argath O Borne" you find his birth in 1872. He must have come over with his brother Herbert.

Hope this helps in some way!

James

I have some news on Herbert!
Harry Argath Oborne had a son called Herbert, born 1866, one of the 9 children I mentioned before. Herbert would be my great-grandfather's brother. Their father, Harry Argath, disappears from British records in 1871, just after the 9th child is born. He reappears in 1891 just before his death in 1893. I am beginning to wonder if he started a new family in the US as Argath Oborne! Do you have any info about him in the US?

My Herbert Oborne came to the US, aged 20, hosier, from Notts. aboard the Aurania in Dec 1884. He married Ellen Allsebrook who had also traveled aboard this same ship. They settled in RI where they worked for a mill. I later saw reference to a Argath Oborne of same places who married a Lillian Limb and they came over in the 1880's and met on a ship. Both families settled in Johnston, near Providence, RI. I am trying to connect Argath and Herbert as I can't locate an other Obornes of this time and place.

This is most interesting!
Argath Oborne is such an unusual name that there must be a connection. My Harry Argath Oborne was from Nottingham but married in England in 1859 and had 9 children. Although he does disapper from records in the 1870's until his death in London 1893. I can only assume it is a son or brother. can you give me some dates so I can check my records?

Kind regards,

James

Is this the Argath Oborne who married Lilliam Limb after they met on the boat to America from Nottingham? The reason for my inquiry is I am searching information on Herbert Oborne who arrived in US and married Ellen Allsebrook. They settled in the Thornton, Johnston, RI area where the Allsebrooks were part of the British Hosiery Company that arrived 24 Dec 1884 and worked the mills. I am trying to connect Argath to Herbert. Any assistance?

I don't know if you are still with the site but I have just joined. Your query came to my notice because my Great-great-grandfather was called Henry Argath Oborne born about 1830 in Oxford, England. He married in 1859 and fathered 8 surviving children to 1870. His wife died in England in 1901.
The name seems too much of a coincidence.

Yours, JMA

Jason:
I may have asked you this before but as an Oborne from Canada (ancestor from Somerset, Eng. in 1832), I am fascinated with the connection to Gen. James Wolfe, who certainly looms large in Canada's history. My other connection is that I am an Hon. Lt. Colonel in the 78th Fraser Highlanders, a regimnt that fought with Wolfe at Quebec in 1759-in fact was his largest regiment.
Can you provide some more details on your branch's relationship to Wolfe?
Would also be very interested in your family's history in the US-are you from the Oborne brothers that owned land in Pennsylvania in the 1600/1700s?

Jim in Winnipeg

Gene:
I was very interested in your comment that your Obornes left Canada after the War of 1812. My Obornes came to Quebec in 1831 and have believed that we were the 1st-and that all Obornes in Canada were descended from James O. and Mary (Young) O. who had 10 children to reach marriage. They came from Barton St. David in Somerset
There were earlier Obornes in Pennsylvania and the New York area in the 1600's and 1700's. Would yours have come to Canada from the U.S. or England-or both?

My grandmother, Mary (Oborne) Lee Bailey from Zanesville, Ohio, is the daughter of Ralph John Oborne (Eva Collins). She remembers Uncle George visiting from California in the 1940s during WWII. Her brother, John "Jack" Frederick Oborne visited George in California prior to his departure for the South Pacific in WWII, probably late 1941, early 1942.

My grandmother lived with her husband (Ervin Lee) and son (Donald Lee) in Fresno, California, in 1944-1945. They visited Uncle George one day and arrived only to find that it was the day of Uncle George's funeral. She remembers going to the house and there was no one there. They found out the funeral was happening that day, and they couldn't find it.

Love to hear from you.

Jennifer:
Sorry that I didn't see this earlier. There is no connection between Osborn and Oborne but there is with the latter and Cuttle.
The Obornes came to Quebec in 1831 from Barton St. David in Somerset, 23 miles from the village of Oborne just across the line in Dorset. James Oborne and Mary (Young) had many childfren, including Martha (b. May 16, 1834) who married George Cuttle in 1855 in Montreal. All the children mentioned all gchilren of James and Mary (believe Francis not Frank) except I can't find Frederick and David. Will also contact you directly.
Lewis Heber Oborne

Hi I am trying to find out information for my wife about Lewis Heber Oborne and his ancestors. He was her grandfather. He was born in 1901/02. There is a Lewis Heber Oborne listed as being born in Lewisham (Lewis forename?) in 1902. He married Evelyn Blanche Sims, born 1900, died 1983 (my wife's Grandmother). This came as a surpise to my wife who thought he was born near Bristol. He later lived near Bristol. She also thinks that Lewis's father (name not known but possibly Heber) was a curator at Bristol Art Gallery. Does anyone have any information about either Lewis or his father?

Cheers
Nairn Kennedy

I have been working on the Oborne line that originated
in Barton St. David, Somerset, England and came to Canada
around 1835. The family James Sr. and his wife Mary (Young)
settled in the Montreal Quebec area and then moved to the Eastern
Townships (Shefford County, Quebec) in 1856 with the younger children. Some of the lines
of this family settled in NJ, and Mass.
Interested in corresponding with those doing Oborne Research.

Sharon Oborne MacKenzie

Oborne family tree

Laurance:
I read your Oct. message in which you suggested that the first U.S. Oborne came from Upper N.Y. State, perhaps near Montreal. This could be quite close to where the first Canadian Obornes lived-in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. That Oborne came from Barton St.David,Somerset, which is 23 miles from Oborne,Dorset.that generally area is 'riddled' with Obornes. There is some speculation that the name may have originally been 'Yeoborne'('borne'meaning 'small river'or 'stream'named Yeo which is nearby as in 'Yeovil',a town close to Oborne.
I have a lot of info. on the Canadian 'Obornes' but not on computer(I just am beginning), Sharon Oborne MacKenzie, who put the first message on this Board, has the early Obornes in Canada on her system. It may be possible that the early 1800's Oborne that you refer to moved south from Quebec. You might contact Sharon and if you need her e-mail,let me know.
Good luck
JGO
